U.S. Routes follow a grid pattern, in which odd-numbered routes run generally north to south and even-numbered routes run generally east to west, though three-digit spur routes can be either-or. Usually, one- and two-digit routes are major routes, and three-digit routes are numbered as shorter spur routes from a main route. Odd numbers generally increase from east coast to west coast.
There's alot more on US route numbers but hope this helps. (From Wiki)

For future reference: odd-numbered highways run north/south, even-numbered run east/west. For interstates (red and blue shields) the low-numbered odd signs are in the West (I-5 runs up the west coast); high-numbered are in the east (I-95 runs up the east coast). For even interstates: low numbers are in the south, high numbers are in the North. US routes (white shields) are the opposite. US-1 is on the east coast, US-101 is on the west coast. 2-digit highways are the main routes, 3-digit highways (with the exception of US-101) are either loops (if the first digit is even) or spurs (if the first digit is odd). There can be multiple 3-digit highways with the same number if they're in different states, so be careful! There are also business loops and spurs, which will have a green version of the Interstate shield, and have the exact same number as their main route (there can also be multiple of them as well). If you see a business loop is on a motorway, that's Capitol City Freeway (Business Loop 80) in Sacramento, California. It is the only business route that is still on a freeway (motorway). Then there are the state highways. Most of these will be a big clue as to what state you're in, since many will either have the state flag, say the state name, or be in the shape of the state; although some (like Pennsylvania's) don't, and those are fairly useless unless you memorize their shapes. In addition, Google maps just displays the state route signs as a white pill for some reason. Also be careful, because South Korea uses the Interstate shield color scheme on the US highway shield for their highways.

  • @donnameyer7181
    @donnameyer7181 Pƙed rokem

Jack, here’s a hint on road signs. Interstate highways are the red and blue shield shaped signs. Even numbers run east and west and odd numbers run north and south. Higher numbers are north and east, then run smaller as you go south and west. State routes often have the shape of the state on the sign. Other highways are no help at all as all states have their own systems.
Place names are rudely repeated all over so they will trick you. For example, there are six or seven towns called Bluffton, all in different states.
Flat land with no trees and big sky is the Great Plains: the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, parts of Wyoming and Colorado and Texas. Big mountains and cliffs, rocky outcropping and canyons occur in the the Rocky Mountains and the desert SW. Farmland is characteristic of the Eastern half of the country, but can occur all over. Suburbs are in every state.

A couple of pointers for the US
At :35, you see a boat. In the US, it's required to label all boats with the state they are registered in so look around boats for a state abbreviation like NY for New York or VT for Vermont
At 1:55 and 3:09 you see the state route 21, all the state routes like that are in the shape of the state so learning the state shapes might be beneficial
At 4:37 your'e talking about the different highways. So the blue ones are called interstates and no interstate number is repeated in the country. However, the white ones (they can be different colors and shaped depending on the state) are state routes. So the low white numbers will be repeated through basically every state. Also, both the blue and white numbers can be called highways. The blue ones will almost always be considered a highway where as the white ones will sometimes be considered a highway.
Hopefully I didn't make you more confused than before.

At 7:20, for you, Jack, and other non-Americans: that flag is the Confederate flag. It is the flag that the Southern states created when they ceceded from the US and formed the Confederate States of America (which was recognized as in independent country by a handful of other nations, but the US and most other countries did not recognize it). Then the Civil War started and the Union (northern US/US Government) retook control over the Southern states and slavery was abolished. The story is, of course, way more complicated that this explanation, but this is the context needed. Some people in the South still use this flag. If you see this flag in front of a house, it is pretty much guaranteed that you are in the area from Texas eastward and approximately Virginia southward. This is the area that we call the "South" because when the Civil War happened many of the western states were still only territories. Some would become states during the Civil War and others not until years later.
I know that Jack is not likely to see this, so this is mostly for the non Americans who watch this channel.
My fellow Americans, please correct me if I have made any mistakes and please add any context that you feel is necessary.
I am from the Northern part of the US so I don't know why people in the South still use the Confederate flag, if anyone who knows sees this, please tell me why.

3:09 This might help. But those white signs with the route number on them are State Routes and often they are in the shape of that specific state. As that one there that says 21 is in the shape of Missouri. Since you can look at the map you can try to figure out which state matches the shape on the sign. It’s not always the case, sometimes it just a white circle around the number, but that one was defiantly the shape of Missouri.
I don’t see the ones shaped like the state where I live in Massachusetts but I did need to know that for the driving permit test.
Edit: 8:01 Also like to point out that the shape of Indiana is on that adopt-a-highway sign.
I’m not great I geography or the US either despite living here. But the more I watch jack play the more I’m noticing these small things that give a hint of which state your in. Might be very helpful if he plays more US maps.
