There is no surprise that there are large expanses of cedar shingles on our Cape Ann shingle style project. But the architect wants to break up the pattern. Tom Silva shows Kevin O’Connor how he does it with a diamond on the upper façade.

Time killers...I did cedar perfections, shakes etc for about 6 years in Swarthmore PA. We did Rosettes, diamonds, circles, Ovals etc...Only one of the shinglers did those...He was a super fast hand nailer...He could do one of those in less than 10 minutes, hand cut, unless it was scalloped, then we used the band saw... If you've worked with cedar, you love it... Oh to be so young again...:)

Could you shingle the entire house like that? Would look like scales... paint them red and gold and call your house the Dragon House.

It seems strange using wraps and waterproofing, then puncturing it with nails to me. How long does it last, as a wall structure? What are maintenance requirements like.
I'm use to brick walls for houses, lived in 20 or so and I've never lived in wooden house. Only wooden flooring systems and roofing, with lots of 6 by 2 generally out of rough sawn, then in roofing some 6 - 12 inch by 3 or 4 inch beams. On the ones I've worked on, mainly they've had pitch pine floor boards, but some with hardwood floor and others with spruce. There definitely are more stick houses being built here, but they still skin them in a brick facade, rather than wood. They use stand offs to maintain the gap, between outer skin and inner skin but are also penetrations. If it was two brick skins, the wall ties are in mortar at both sides and there is a gap for insulation, so just seems like a much more sensible way to build. (Blocks are also used a lot more now, sometimes just internally, but sometimes, if rendering, then on both).
