Join host Pete Pardo as he looks at his Top 10 songs from Canadian proggers Saga! ***Editors Note- the 'concept' songs I couldn't spit out are called the 'Chapters'...sorry for the brain fart!
My top 10 : 1- Conversations 2- Don't be late 3- Humble Stance 4- Ice nice 5- Framed 6- Careful where you step 7- On the loose 8- No man's land 9- Wind him up 10- You"re not alone
A total delight. That top 10 could have easily been a top 15.🇨🇦 And it's true that Saga should have been huge. Soooo many good crazy musically songs. 🎤🎸🥁🎹🎹🎹🎸
Alrighty Peter! This band has lots of excellent songs in their early catalog and, for me, The Security of Illusion album was a great comeback for the classic line up. I almost put the whole first set of chapters on this list, lol. Also, I switched the 1&2 spots right before posting. Enjoy! Top 10 Saga: 10. Mind Over Matter 9. Intermission 8. The Pitchman 7. Careful Where You Step 6. Ice Nice 5. Tired World 4. Wind Him Up 3. No Stranger 2. Don't Be Late 1. Images
Some of my favourites : No Stranger. The Pitchman. You're Not Alone. Careful Where You Step. Will It Be You. As I Am. Images. Giant. The Cross. Mind Over Matter. Don't Say Goodbye. .... and MANY more.
This band has more talented members than most that are more popular-yet again its a Canadian thing. If they had been British or American, they would be a household name.
Im From here in the states so came in very late in the game. In fact watching you has got me into them. Started with House Of Cards and never looked back. Great stuff👍
Worlds Apart sold so well because it was released one month after MTV made its debut in late summer 1981 so it was able to take advantage of heavy rotation for “On The Loose”. In fact, many Canadian bands that Americans were unfamiliar with had their videos featured on MTV in its first 2 years and this is one of the reasons why Saga, April Wine, Aldo Nova, Rush, Loverboy, and others did so well in 1981, 82, and 83.
I saw "Images at Twilight" live. So every single song was from the album and from their first self-titled album. I remember it well. Everyone I knew ended up going out and buying the album. The songs are great and we all put the cover up on our bedroom walls.
Pete, thank you so much for this post on Saga - one of my favorite bands. Yes, too bad they were never really big in US. I was at the same NYC show at BB Kings (7/6/06). My one and only time seeing them. It was their first concert in the US in almost 20 years. And last. This was the tour in support of their most recent tour at the time for "Trust". Yeah, about 50 people there. Doubtful they'll ever return to US. Here's the setlist from that day. (some classics, some newer material from early 2000's). Trust That’s As Far As I'll Go Wind Him Up On The Air Keep It Reel Drum Solo The Flyer The Runaway I’m OK Scratching The Surface Careful Where You Step Humble Stance You’re Not Alone On The Loose Don’t Be Late (Encore) Zebra - Another cool (relatively unknown band outside NY and New Orleans) that I saw many times at BB Kings. Excellent debut album.
Was waiting for this one. Thanks Pete. Too many difficult choices for me. Saga is my 2nd favorite Canadian band next to Rush and BTO would be 3rd. Agree with your #1 . However, 2. Mouse In A Maze 3. You're Not Alone 4. The Perfectionist 5. Don't Be Late 6. Social Orphan 7. Humble Stance 8. No Stranger 9. Scratching The Surface 10. Time's Up
When their Worlds Apart album came out in '81, it was an incredibly strong year for hard rock music in general so many now classic albums released. Incidentally, the way I became a Saga fan was by accident; my brother was supposed to buy Saxon's Strong Arm of the Law album and confused it with Worlds Apart, which initially bummed me out but it being such a fantastic record it soon didn't matter.
After almost three decades of listening to Saga, I'm gutted that they're retiring, but you can hardly blame them. "Trust" is outstanding. I've been listening to this CD constantly since I purchased it, and I am overwhelmed by how good it is. This just might be the best thing they've done since their "heyday" - it's that good. Pretty incredible considering how long the boys have been at it. Great video as usual !!! 🤘 Greetings from Germany
Another great band thanks Pete yes so so underrated I remember hearing in 2013 that they were doing a big tour the following year with magnum in Germany but they weren't playing with them here in the UK but as soon as I heard the best of album I became a fan such Fantastic players
Hello, the one positive i was able to pull from a horrible 2020, was i stumbled upon your fantastic channel!! Totally digging the attention paid to Canadian acts!! Rush was obvious..but delighted to see Attention given to April Wine, Max Webster ( i thought you might include KMs solo,... hey theres a category suggestion.. vocalists from established bands solo..sure Dio will win but still.lol).. and now Saga! Neil Young Guess Who or the Hip i wonder? In any event, tysm, happy new year from the great white north eh!
Wind him up was Saga's biggest hit in Germany. In 1982 it had been in the Charts for 14 weeks and peaked at number 45. It got a lot of airplay and was their first song I have ever heard.
Before I even watch this, I can honestly say that whatever songs stood out for you Pete, that they will probably be awesome (I even like the "pop prog" albums). I LOVE this band, and its amazing that Michael Sadler's voice has NOT changed much since their debut. Whatever he does to keep that voice must come from the fountain of youth (Xanadu? . . . well, that's another canuck band :p). Its a shame they are not as big as Rush, or even Triumph. The "Germans" seem to know whats up though. I just wish they'd tour the U.S. and the West Coast (other than Cruise to the Edge), but last year they said they were retired, now they're back - will have to watch this video after work today :). "Generation 13" is one of my all time fave concept albums, VERY unique, and at that time, I didn't know they were still together in 1995. MANY albums since, all have standout tracks.
I was lucky enough to see Saga in St Charles Illinois in Oct 2019. One of only two shows in the US. Caught Ian’s pick after Wind Him Up. Put it in a frame with a my poster the band signed after the show. Favorite song: Goodbye Once Upon a Time. Very emotional song.
Thanks Pete to create some interest in Saga here on YT. I am fan since 1983, they had so many great albums and they are a fantastic live band. For new fan please check out : Silent knight, Worlds apart, In Transit ( Live), 1st Album ......
Pete: I really appreciate your recognition of SAGA in 2 internet deliveries. Firstly, this band should be in the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and be considered into other rock/ progressive rock recognitions. I have seen RUSH 10 times, Styx 7 times, YES 3 times, early GENESIS twice ... However, SAGA ... From their inception in 1977 to most recent 18 times. You make an excellent point : there are very unique singers and styles that I have gravitated to over 50 years ... What is original ... What catches my attention ... Vocals are usually first ... I think of Freddie Mercury, Geddy Lee, Midge Ure ( Ultravox fame ) and Michael Sadler. Btw: there was a really interesting movement coming out of Toronto, Canada ( along with RUSH and SAGa ) most notably that included Triumph, Goddo, and ( my favourite Zon ... If you like SAGA ... Check out their debut Astral Projector ... You will love it!!! ) ... Continued success ... I love your stuff from Winnipeg, Canada ... Signing off ... Be safe
It's always fun to listen to how others reason about what they like. I really liked the reasoning that there should have been more hits from the band. I started to listen to the band in 1982 when "In Transit" was released and Saga has been my favorite band since that day. The first four albums were spectacular but they also had a couple of really strong ones from Full Circle (1999) to Network (2004). Well, when it comes to the best songs it's really a tough one for me. I could count over 50 ones that are really fantastic. But the best of all is "Don't be late".
Apart from 'Cat Walk', all these tunes are still on the setlist today. They are (were, up 'till now...) touring Europe like crazy. Caught them in august in (of course) Germany. Open air show. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
Always great to hear everyone's favourites. I won't argue anyone's choices because, let's face it, it all comes down to personal choice. I agree with many of the choices here, and I agree there are so many choices how do you pick one over the other? The reality is not a lot of bands have even half as much materiel to choose from. With SAGA the idea of having a top ten doesn't really work as it excludes to many songs. you need to expand the number to at least top 20, given the broad spectrum of their work. Interestingly SAGA's fan-base spans the globe. There are SAGA cover bands in Asia a place they have never toured. I personally feel that it is up to the promoters to advertise the bands to get people out to the events. Every time I have seen the band they do a stellar show! So many people complain but I didn't know they were playing or I would have been there. I have seen people fly in from around the world just to see one show from as far away as Japan. The fans are among the most dedicated I have ever seen. But there is one thing that has been missed in this very interesting video. And that is the fans! SAGA is not just the band, SAGA is everyone at an event the band refers to their fans as "family" because that's how they feel about them. They share a deeper connection with their fans and will go out of their way to ensure everyone has a great time. I guess that is part of the reason for their success. Family sticks together and for a band to survive 40+ years of writing, recording, touring, performing. They realized that it's difficult to meet everyone and play for everyone with a fan base that is so vast around the globe. So for now they have slowed the pace and I hand picking the shows they do in an effort to recharge the batteries, and I hope for a new SAGA album one day filled with even more favourites. I would like that all SAGA fans for supporting the band over the last 4 decades. We all look forward to seeing you again.
Hell of a list Pete, its so hard to narrow down Saga, lm a completist when it comes to their output so I know what you mean. Their live DVDS are killer as well, Im sure you have already seen them. Just too many songs to rank! Here's another Canadian band for you to investigate if you haven't already, Zon. I bet there are a lot of music fans out there who have never heard of them. They do have a small catalog but I personally think their worth checking out. Always enjoy the videos and thanks for focusing on the Great White North.

Shocked that you didn't mention Behaviour, not a bad song on the album and lovely track flow, all the songs sitting well with the next, even blending into the following. Its a bit more AOR than prog, but a wonderful album. Love Wildest Dreams as well. I think though towards the end of their run there was a lot of treading water and tracks that are almost a parody of previous material. Worst albums Generation 13, and Pleasure and the Pain. Of course it would be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff.

Whaaaaat? wind him up number two and on the loose number seven? Are you serious? I would rank number one and number two! What about scratching the surface? That's an incredible song too. I better wait for a Saga ranking albums.
Where is it written that everyone needs to like songs the same way you do and in the same order? They have a TON of incredible songs, can't fit them all into a top 10. Saga ranking the albums show has already been done.
I will always stand by silent knight and their self titled being their absolute strongest albums.

Great band, great list!

Great pics Pete! I don’t think you could of done any better. You have shown me how great Saga really is!

cat walk the long version has one of Ian Crichton’s best guitar solos from the early days 🇨🇦 🎸✌️
I thought I was the only one who knew about Saga. You oughta drop the needle for 15 seconds on these as you go along.
Copyright issues with CZcams if I do that...this is why I don't play any of the music.
They played their last concert in Puerto Rico this past Fall. They were huge in Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Amnesia, great song and off Worlds Apart
Wind Him Up and Don't Be Late are my favorites.
I saw them twice in Holland about fifteen years ago. Such a strong groove and Adam Sandler ties the band to the audience. Defenitely some memorable anthems.

I HAVE ONE FOR YOU PETE HOW ABOUT A TOP 10 SONGS OF MOXY ANOTHER FORGOTTEN BAND LOVE YOUR VIDEOS KEEP THEM COMING TAKE CARE
LOVE the shirt! Where did you order that one from? Tried to find on the internet, but failed.
A vendor called Trending Tees that I follow on Facebook. I get ads for so many cool shirts from them and I've bought a bunch. They only sell them for a limited time though.
Never heard of this band before Pete, but they sound pretty good.
Check em out. They really have some excellent tunes.
We need new top 10 songs
Since I only knew one song by Max Webster I dove into their catalog today. So, since I only know On the Loose, I'm going to dive into Saga's now.
EDIT:
Okay, I'm half way through Heads or Tails. Is it me or do they sound like The Fixx?
Whaaaaat? wind him up number two and on the loose number seven? Are you serious? I would rank number one and number two! What about scratching the surface? That's an incredible song too. I better wait for a Saga ranking albums.
Where is it written that everyone needs to like songs the same way you do and in the same order? They have a TON of incredible songs, can't fit them all into a top 10. Saga ranking the albums show has already been done.
I Saga open for Jethro Tull at the Glens Fall Civic Center. 1982/83?
I cannot possibly come up with a Top 10 from Saga. Maybe not even a Top 50. Lately I've really been into the House of Cards and Generation 13 CDs.
1. Someone Should. Just wow...
Yeah, they have alot of great songs. Odd that they were'nt bigger than they were. Maybe management shouldve worked a bit harder on promoting them.
