That's not specified in the original story, although Rick Riordan did use it to address the plothole. Achilles was fated to have a short but glorious life, so there had to be a way to kill him at some point, and his mother's oversight is a convenient way to have him be superhuman but still vulnerable. Greek tragedies frequently use contrivances like this to fulfill the demands of fate.
A competing version of the story is that she anointed him and set him on fire to burn away his mortality, but his father walked in on her, thought she was killing their son, and intervened. His heel was the only part to not burn so he had that vulnerability, which makes a little more sense, in my opinion.

Louis, I know you quit social media a couple of years ago but if it happens you read this - you are a master of art. Your way with words is beyond outstanding. I can listen to your bits for dozens of times and still laugh about it as if it was the first time. I am not a native english speaker but I enjoy every single word.
I’ve watched this so many times, and I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the best 10 minutes of stand up of all time. The way he delivers these jokes is a work of art. Every word is placed and toned perfectly. Louis is something special man.

In my country, there were months-long anti-corruption protests this year. There was also this one guy, who was almost every day on the protest holding a sign with some numbers. Two, most liberals still believe in the evolution of social mores and tolerance, but a young, very small but loud segment want to divide our society into good (anti-racist, feminist) people and bad (racist, misogynist) people, merely the other side of the coin to the conservative POV of saints and sinners. A black and white world view that liberals have historically opposed ("the world is gray, everything is relative"), but which social media rewards, with 9/10 replies being scolds of previous commenter.

I am Greek, been hearing this myth all my life and after watching this and I just now noticed two things: first, indeed Achilles' mother could have just dipped him twice, while holding him from each heel alternatively and second, Achilles could use a different shoe and stop being overconfident to stay in the fashion of sandals. @@richie_williams I think there’s just something comedic about seeing something or someone look extremely small with a bunch of empty space above them. And there’s even more comedic value in such a jarring cut like the one I mentioned because we’re SO close on his face to the point his jaw is cut off. It is WAY too close. I’d imagine this clip is cropped somehow. It doesn’t look right. And so going from Louis filling the entire frame to a bunch hot black emptiness with Louis looking as small as a mouse is really funny.
