Just a few little ideas... You could paint the interior of the light box with chalkboard/blackboard paint which would not reflect the surrounding light so much - if you wanted a very dark background or interior. Covering mountboard inserts with smokey abstract pastel marks is another way of making a lot of fairly cheap 'impressionistic' backgrounds..
