Alien Isolation is good, and an achievement in lighting and design. Admittedly fans of the franchise will like it more just for that reason, but even though it was janky at times its hard to call it “bad.” I always thought the amount of tension in Isolation heavily outweighed the amount of “jumpscares” of which it hardly had any. This looks good too, i just don’t think it’s fair to even mention Alien Isolation in the same sentence because it definitely achieved what it set out to do, and its so cool to explore something so fucking accurate to the sets in the movie.

    • @underthemayo

@@underthemayo that is basically what it is but i will say at the time of launch i don’t think it had much competition. It’s certainly a decent game for the time. It has weird moments, and in my opinion the DLC is incredibly low effort and cruddy, and i think the game had to be rewritten or scaled back a bit a bit late in its development cycle. It’s flawed, but i can’t think of it as being “bad” by any stretch of the imagination. It basically is just a tour though, especially once you get near the end and aren’t as mystified by the tricks they try to use throughout the game

    • @jesspeed
      @jesspeed Před rokem +2

A lot of the tension is not because of gameplay but because the game knows how to use your own fear against you. We’re all scared of the dark and creepy music but a good horror game has to be more than just that. They did try with the AI I agree that much but my biggest issue with the game was the boring puzzles and the pacing. I played the first few hours of the game and I got so bored because of the artificial scary moments and the other human AIs and bots. I’d be happy with just the alien but the game just doesn’t throw it at you enough. You cannot sustain my horror if all you’re doing is showing creepy lighting and sound effects. The best sentence would be “I’m walking in a haunted house”. Fake tension everywhere because you know they’re not gonna jump out at you.
At first you might think the tension is real but after multiple hours, you find out that the encounters with the Alien is just too few. Instead the majority is just a walk in a haunted house solving boring puzzles. That is just not enough. You need to know the danger is there and the best way to do that is to see the danger. Or reduce the length of the game so that you don’t get bored halfway through. You could say the game gets more interesting like 10 hours but if I got bored 3 hours in, the game isn’t doing a good job with its pacing.

I'd say this was the best survival horror experience for me gameplaywise, the tension and immersion are immense. And the length is optimal, just when I started feeling really confident and almost fearless the game was close to the ending. One or two hours longer and the final impression would have been a bit worse.
Bunker for gameplay and Signalis for atmosphere, mood and plot are my two survival horror pillars now for a long time. If someone manages to combine both strengths in one game (if that is at all possible) that would be a masterpiece above and beyond.

This is the right balance of horror:
A complete stealth focus (Outlast and previous Amnesia games): tends to become tedious ones you stop finding the roaming monsters scary and instead view them as obnoxious obstacles that prevent you from exploring and going forward.
An action focus on the other hand (RE 4 and Dead Space): tends to leave you with too much ammo (because directly confronting the monsters is mandatory) that at some point it's starting to feel more like a power fantasy than a horror.
A balance of these 2 is what a proper horror game should strive for!

It is a very engaging horror game, I especially liked how some areas have either no tables to hide under or just some wooden tables which have a 60% chance of being destroyed by the monster. It was just enough to be a constant worry in the back of your mind, always thinking: if the monster comes, where the fuck was that metal table? I beat most of the game without the generator on because I just didn't know how much fuel was actually available. Turns out I was right, fuel was scarce, and some tasks require the generator to be on, so if you use it all, you're gonna be filling a lot of empty bottles with a piddle of gas in each (you'll find out).

I think a viable strategy for using weapons in these games, is to first memorize the new locations you discover by being stealthy, avoiding the monster at first, but then if need be use the weapon if you are close to progress and figured out what to do next and where to go, not wondering arround. The worst thing you can do is to waste all the weapons if you end up in a jam, unable to figure out some puzzle or a problem and you are exploring. So explore first, and then when the locations are clear, and your objectives, nuke the monster and move on. That is how i did it in Penumbra and games like Bethesda's Call of Cthulhu DCOTE.

Alien Isolation works way better on PC where you can mod the Alien to have a much longer “leash.” They gave the Alien all this technically advanced AI behavior…and then gave it a short leash so the player is always dragging it around and it is always very close to the player. You almost never see it’s exploratory behavior or advanced AI with the default settings.

    • @Jedzelex
      @Jedzelex Před rokem +10

What the OP says about using a mod to "fix" Alien Isolation actually ruins it.
      Let me explain.
And I'll start by mentioning a little SPOILER that gets often ignored in these discussions.
      And its this:
YOU'RE NOT DEALING WITH ONE XENOMORPH IN THE GAME. BUT WITH MANY OF THEM AT ONCE.
That's right. A single Xeno is not supposed to be lurking around the ship. But a whole hoard of them. That is something that you learn by the end of the game.
That is why it seems like the Xeno "teleports" magically to different locations. When in reality, you are dealing with different xenos that are patroling those areas.
So the PC mod mentioned by OP, it was made with the erroneous concept that there is just one single Xeno in the entire ship. But that is not what is really going on.
Therefore, by keeping the xeno away from the player, the mod actually ruins the surprise at the end when the player learns why they found it nearly impossible to get away from the Alien. It was always on their asses.
Anyway, a good Alien Isolation player should have no problem dealing with the xeno even in the unmodified version of the game. The key to success in that game is this:
      • Avoid camping for too long - you have to keep moving at almost all times to avoid the game's AI to send the Xeno to look for you. Study the map and use the motion detector to know where to head over (the detector works even on nightmare mode).
      • Don't depend on items to distract the alien (they become worthless the more you use them). Instead try to do like Sam Fisher does in those Splinter Cell games and sneak pass every human, android or alien to reach your goals.
I've beaten the game on Nightmare mode without mods of any kind. Its perfectly doable.
And I understand that Alien Isolation is not a game for everybody. Especially for those that get easily flustered when under pressure.
I dunno, maybe I've played the Souls games too much and that's why AI doesn't seem to be too difficult to me. Just normal? 😅
I also don't wanna tell people to avoid using the mod if that's the only way they can play Alien Isolation. If they still enjoy the game tha way, by all means go for it.

This game looks like it has elements from Resident Evil 1 Remake (burning corpses), Dishonored (rats attracted to corpses attracting enemies), Alone in the Dark 2008 (inventory management and emphasis on dumping gasoline and fire as a tool, using rats strategically), and obviously Alien Isolation (unscripted omnipresent monster with advanced AI that can kill you at any moment). It also seems to use a similar mechanic from the Penumbra series which had these hallways that were safe in the light and dangerous in the dark, requiring you to block holes in the walls before turning off the lights in order to progress or else you get instakilled.
Honestly a lot of great games and great inspirations to take from. I can't wait to try it out in 6 hours.

(Spoilers! This comment is assuming you beat the game) Honestly i loved this game, as a person who hated rebirth, didn't like a machine for pigs all too much (its not bad its just not really what amnesia needed ) this awesome. I loved the inventory mechanics, its similar to the dark descent, but you actually have to think what you want to carry.
Amnesia the bunker is basically the dark descent, but 100% better. Although in my opinion, it isn't all too scary, just tense. When the monster found me in the game i wasn't really scared i was like "Oh hello!" And died. While in the dark descent i was like "Oh sh**" if I was found. Which honestly isn't too bad. for the bunker i think it works well to not be all too scary.
Overall i think its a solid 9.9/10 only issue i had was the game being way too short. I mean once you get the clipers and wrench the game is basically over. You just need to walk around, avoid the monster at the end, and boom your done!
Oh yeah, the guns, i love the addition, they're a tool, not a weapon, the stalker doesn't even get killed by it which is fantastic. I wish more horror games give you a gun and let you know your weak against this thing and your gun won't even kill it if you shoot the monster. The shotgun, i will say i wish you had to find it, because it would be basically more rewarding than killing some blind disabled guy with shotgun. I will admit the boss was cool and fun, its just wish i had more control and have it be my fault if i didn't get it. Maybe have the shotgun in the barracks or something and you have to like knock down a door to it. Idk. But a fantastic game everyone should try!

I feel just the fantasy alone of facing off against the xenomorph makes the game a 10/10 for some without even digging into the gameplay. The bunkers monster does carry the game a bit but it’s other functions like it’s ACTUAL survival horror features and the multi choice ways of dealing with problems definitely also make it worth playing too. I agree with most of your points expect the complain about the dragging physics and the note reading because these are two fundamental characteristics of Amnesia and Frictional's game design, The Bunker didn't "do what every game does this days" with note delivered story ,it is literally part of the franchise that pioneered this kind of storytelling since the Penumbra series and the first Amnesia.
Not having these things would be like having a Resident Evil game without backtracking and limited inventory. And as a fellow RE fan I believe you would agree that you felt it when features like that were removed from the modern games ,well, it would be the same for an Amnesia fan if the Physics and notes were missing from the Bunker and to be fair, you can guess the main points of the story by just what you see or the recorded notes, the rest are just icing to give you the rest of the ugly details.

The Bunker looks like everything people were hoping Rebirth would be.
Don't really have much more to say than that, Rebirth just didn't have a whole lot going on but Bunker looks REALLY involved and that's my favorite quality in a good horror game; the Player having the agency to make bad decisions.
    Post Viewing Edit:
Telling your entire story through notes is a colossal pet peeve of mine. To any would-be horror media directors out there, if your entire story is better experienced by just reading a synopsis of it over the internet, you failed your job. The point of a story, especially in a horror game, is to be an experience that has value outside of the script. Seeing that Leon said his famous "Bingo Night" line versus actually HEARING him say it while looking around confused and unsure of what to do are two completely different things.
This feels like the one downside when it comes to Frictional Games as a whole because this is a convention they have used from the start and feel like they're doing out of habit at this point.

    •  Před rokem +3

Rebirth was a bit too ambitious with lots of elements that were cool for some type of games, but not for Rebirth itself. Too much talking, too many flashbacks, too many things totally ruined immersion for me. Some places were awesome, but sometimes it was a walking sim. The fort was cool and creepy, but it was all over the place. Not a bad game in overall, but a bit of a disappointment, Frictional Games clearly tried something else with the old formula. Bunker looks like a mixture of Resident Evil, Alien: Isolation, Amnesia, Penumbra, with some randomization here and there. SOMA feels like the highest budget, longest, most emotional, deepest game they ever made, really loved it, this games looks lower budget but with awesome creative choices and execution. Back to peak horror! First Amnesia has special place in my heart and mind and nightmares, And while I enjoyed the other Amnesia games for some spooks and good stories, I kinda felt like sometimes they missed the terror of the original game.

Even A Machine For Pigs had voice acting between notes, so did The Dark Descent and its expansion. I'm surprised by how much they held back on this since, Henri being a silent protagonist seems out of place for an Amnesia game.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this game. That how it’s different with the rest of the previous Amnesia titles. This really shown real horror instead of the typical cheesy FNAF jump scares.

100% subbed. Thanks for the reminder because I had seen your vids before but forgot to subscribe. Your critique of village was perfection- and I am by no means a purist. Some people just “get it”

My problem with Alien Isolation and this type of game without auto saves is I’m not afraid of the actual monster/Alien. The real threat and fear comes from losing my progress and having to redo things over again…. I’m not afraid of the monster…I’m afraid of wasting my time repeating stuff over and over lol

Without consequence, there's no reason to fear a monster once you get past the initial horror of it.

This title is unnecessarily diminishing of Alien: Isolation
