    Hi! Steve, I like Musang King but D24 is my all-time favorite! The taste hits the spot every time😄. D24 used to be the king before Musang King came about. Musang king has a much stronger taste compared with the rest and durian experts advise to eat it last so that it will not overpower the taste of other durian.

    I like D24, Musang King & Black Thorn. These Durians are origin from Pahang state. These durian can easily found in KL or Selangor (during season)… However, few years back during MAHA Agricultural Expo, I tried durian from Penang island; Durian Susu & Durian Daun Hijau. These premium durian tasted so good, milky, creamy and sweet and I must admit that these durian from Penang can easily beat D24 and if it’s not too much even Musang King… The price range way cheaper than Musang King.. The thing with durians is that you need to take 2 or 3 variants to really let the diff traits of each durian stands out. So do take black thorn with another durian to relatively enjoy the difference and the individuality. Also freshness esp straight off from tree do emit extra quality like liquorish alkohol taste for example

      @brynnop2101 Před 2 lety

      Yes well done. Few people seem to realize that the richest, very best durians are kampung durians. However I am talking about a tiny fraction of the total kampung durian haul each year. If you take 100 kampung durians at random, maybe 30% will be horrible, almost inedible, a further 30% will be pleasant but inferior to even the cheapest of the branded ones, a further 30% will be good quality roughly on a par with the branded durians, a further 9% will be excellent - richer, creamier, and especially far more interesting and varied in flavor than even the expensive brands, and finally.... the 1%.. wow, unforgettable. Problem is in order to get to taste this 1% you have to keep buying a heck of a lot of kampung durian until you finally land it. Paying for an expensive grand is an insurance policy. Every single time will be good, since you (usually!) Know what you are getting, yet at the same time you resign yourself to having no chance of the rare jackpot.

    Penang has 4 specialty durian which is loved by the locals a lot. The one you mentioned cheaper durian the name is Red Prawn (locals call it ang heh, reason being is the fruit is orangy in color, it is very creamy and if the tree is old it gets much bitter tinge than sweet). There are other 3 more which are Cuppling (local calls it kapri, white in color. Shape is flat and round.), then there is Green Skin and also Hor Lor (means gourd - long in shape- sweet and sticky). Try this and give your comments next year if you are around Penang. Durian seasons starts from mid may to early july. Black thorn is originated in Penang as well. For those trying durian for the 1st time, prepare yourself mentally. Tell yourself you are about to eat creamy vanilla ice-cream with a big dose of whisky and rum.
    I'll recommend 24D for durian virgins. Once you graduate, go for high quality Black Gold Musang King. It has small seeds and the flesh peels off the seed cleanly. If you like sweeter durian, go for King Red Prawn.

    Hi steve the penang durian (simply known as red prawn) which are from balik pulau is famous and superior. I find the balik pulau ones taste more complex with the so called alcoholic taste and super creamy, different than the typical red prawns i buy in the klang valley. I had the chance to go to an orchard in balik pulau area in penang and tried a few fresh durians. One tip to tell the freshness is the stem of the fruit is not dry.

    Best way I can describe durian is if you like strong flavours then it’s for you. Think blue cheese. I would say D24 is fantastic entry level eating. It’s a good utility durian and it’s good value for money. For me my favourite is still musang king. It just has the roundest flavour, not overly bitter or sweet but extremely pungent with creamy flesh akin to a thick custard. Never start with musang king just like you would never start with a Stilton and finish on a Brie.

  • @stanleytcw9894
    @stanleytcw9894 Před 2 lety +2

    The D number of all durian is different. The lower the D number, it become more sweeter. The higher the D, it is much richer and bitter. Musang King is D197 . Always start eat at the lower D to higher D…to appreciate the richness of the fruit. Also, the rounded the durian doesn’t mean it is very good, it only guarantee more seeds in the durian. In fact a little bit of deformed/bended shape might provide more richness as lesser seeds in the deformed durian means more concentrated of richness and flavour.

    • @Steve-Owens
      @Steve-Owens  Před 2 lety

      The grading of Durian is to do with the shape as I said in the video. You are right, the shape does not effect the taste but often does mean you are paying for more fruit than husk. In a deformed Durian there can often be large areas of no seed and the ratio of husk to fruit is lower. The deformed shape does not mean better taste, that is far more complex and depends a great deal on the tree, soil and freshness, a good shape fruit picked at the wrong time will never taste as good as a ripe dropped fruit of either shape.
      I'm sorry but the idea of starting with the lower D number doesn't make sense. To me that will never add up.. also some higher D numbers are sweeter some less. It's far better to end with what YOU personally enjoy most..

    • @esphilee
      @esphilee Před 2 lety +1

      Durian types are catalogue with the numbered according to the sequence it was catalogued by the agriculture department.
      They Started with D1. The sequence number is currently up to or just over D200.
      If new type is found, it will catalogued with the next number available. The numbers do not determine sweetness nor richness, there may be coincidence, but definitely not based on that.
      D2 is actually richer than D24.
      Theoretically, The actual D24, if genuine, should be the exact clone copy of another D24 with the same DNA. Yes they are suppose to be cloned not planted from seed.
      But I doubt they are cloned now a day.

    I grew up in a rubber and durian plantation in Kajang,Selangor D.E and it was D2 and D24 varieties. That was 30 years ago. I honestly haven't tasted the sour profile in them. Creamy, roasted sweetness ,alcoholic scent/pong and a gradual bitterness are very common. There is a big difference in taste depending on its freshness.Enjoy your durian, Steve.

      Yes exactly this. Steve please also see my comment below on kampung durians if you can find it. "Kampung" literally means "village", "countryside", "local area away from big city", something like that, quite difficult to translate. But importantly when it comes to durians, it means something like "other" or "miscellaneous" ie all the rest of the durians which are NOT a specific type/grade (such as d24, musang king etc". In other words you don't know what you are going to get until it is opened and it can turn out anywhere from foul to heavenly, the full spectrum
