my father used to work with malaysia agriculture reseacrh department, now in malaysia here there is around 200 registered variety on the department, these 200 species of Durian result from mix breeding or just god sent original breed that have their unique taste, some of these tree basically almost instinct or just very rare, like musang king there was only 3 three trees found back 1950 at an orchard in gua musang at kelantan state, luckily one orchard owner from Raub noticed the superiority of its taste, and take some of its seed and branch and grow it in Raub. And he registered it with Gov and gov continue helping to breed it and distribute it to the whole country..now its the most expensive breed of durian in malaysia mybe the world.
Musang king registered as D197 if im not mistaken, there is now around 200 ++ recognised variety from D01 to D 200 and so on, the famous and planted like D 197 and D24 and many more.. these 200 varieties that already registered/ recognised and continue to be breeded by malaysia agri department.
this initiative to preserve the best family of durian and cross breeding done side by side by individual / private, and gov funded from year 1950s , proud to say my father involve in developing some of these variety, now that he retired but still continue to plant the seed and sell these variaties including D197 , D24 and many more registered and rare breeds that not so known or famous but taste better than musang king, according to my tongue 😬

There is a difference in the method in which durians are harvested in Thailand versus Malaysia.
In Thailand, many orchards tend to harvest the durians while they are still on the tree and then keep them until they ripe. In Malaysia, durians are allowed to properly ripe on the trees and they are only collected once they naturally fall to the ground.... Perhaps this is a contributing factor to the taste of Durians....

Musang king u can take the flesh out and do all kind of bakery and ice cream stuffs, but not black thorn. After froze process being added, black thorn taste like D168 mas johor or as known as ioi. Omg you tell it EXACTLY like how I feel about frozen Durian!!!
As you say, yup, its the consistency!!! Whereas when I get them fresh, it's a total hit & miss!
The absolute worst are those dry rubbery ones 😝.
I'm in Vancouver, Canada. And a fresh Musang King durian here is $80-120 each durian!
Other breeds/types are a bit less, at $50-90 per fresh Durian.
Frozen ones are a lot less, but still about $20-30 each, depending on size.
Lately, I've been more into getting them prepackaged frozen; AROY-D has frozen Mornthong durians (out of shell, packaged).
It is $11.49 Canadian Dollars, for a package of frozen, 1 lb.
This way, I get to eat Durian all year 'round 😁
The consistency is always there 👍.

Generally, the taste of Msian/sporean differs as we prefer the fruit to be more ripe, i.e it has fallen from the tree. The northern countries of Malaysia (e.g thailand) prefer their fruit plucked from the tree making them slightly less ripe. However, having said that, msian/sporean also prefers their durian with a bittersweet taste and the musang king/black thorn provides this flavour as well as the intensity. Nevertheless, we generally like durians, especially when its placed infront us regardless of species. Important thing is to appreciate and enjoy the unique taste each fruit even of the same species because each fruit has a slightly different taste

Durian will fall down from the tree naturally when it ripe, Malaysia harvest durian this way. Malaysian can do this because durian plantation and the city is not far away. Durian had a short shelf live, so Thailand will harvest unripe durian by plucking, because the durian plantation is far away from the city, i think this affect the taste of durian. Thailand people also eat unripe durian, they like the crunchy texture, so a ripe Musang king might not be their liking. For those who like ripe durian, there is no doubt Musang king is very sweet. As fir me i still prefer D24 durian.
