  • Today’s feature was the definition of a natural athlete with all the physical tools to be a cornerstone player for a franchise. That franchise was thought to be the Clippers when they took Al Thornton 14th overall and the last lottery pick in a highlighted 2007 draft class for its good and its bad. Thornton became an all rookie performer after his first season, giving the Clippers high hopes they selected a sleeper at the end of the lottery. In his first and second year Al was having a better career than arguably any pick in front of him not named Kevin Durant, and looked primed to take the tweener forward position to new heights. What I liked most about Al’s game was he made up for all his deficiencies by having one of the most explosive first steps, and once he got by you there was no stopping his athletic finishes at the rim. For any team looking for a wing that seemed tailor made for transition, up and down basketball look no further. I as many, were shocked to see the clippers trade him mid way through his third season, but at the time the clippers were in complete rebuild mode and soon figured out Al Thornton for them, wasn’t it. His next team the Wizards found that out quick after 73 games and the Warriors in just 22. All bottom feeding teams at that time that Thornton should’ve made great strides with and become one of their key pieces going forward. Instead his NBA career lasted just 4 years with 3 different teams before embarking on his overseas journey at 27 years old and entering what should be a basketball player’s prime. Al Thornton Was Supposed To Be THE ONE! Out In 4 Years! Stunted Growth

Had all the physical tools to be a solid NBA player. With some skill development Al Thornton could've been an all star.

It's funny how many people remember these guys from their "performances" on video games. There's a soccer game called _Football Manager_ where you can find retrospectives online about wonderkids who didn't pan out but became legendary to some people simply for how good they became in that game.

It’s crazy how easy you forget how crazy it was that Kevin Durant was drafted all the way back in 2007. It seems like out Thorton was in the NBA way before Kevin Durant crazy just to think about it.

Can you do a spurt growth for Lu Dort,
    From Undrafted
    To a two way contract
    To a fully guaranteed contract
To drop 30 on James Harden in a game 7 while locking out the best guards of the NBA
    To a second contract

    1. What killed his career was being drafted by the Clippers organization. People truly forget that along with the Sacramento Kings, that's usually where careers went to die in the 1990s and 2000s.
    2. He had no defined position. He could slash past power forwards, but couldn't defend them in the paint. He could defend small forwards, but couldn't stretch the floor with his shooting and had a suspect handle that negatively affected his passing and caused him to turnover the ball a lot.
    3. He never improved any aspect of his game as was stated in the video. He was overly reliant on his athleticism. Once he started having injury trouble, that severely hindered his game and he was out of the league soon thereafter.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 Před 5 měsíci +1

Yeah, I remember when he was drafted, Jay Bilas said "I don't know if anyone plays harder than Al Thornton", but it seemed like when he got to the league, got the big contract and such that he didn't put the same work in, which happens a good amount with pros. Plus, the injuries really did take their toll on him. His athleticism really was his best asset as a pro, but when that began to slip due to the injuries, he really had no place in the NBA

His efficiency was never bad, at least from the field. 43% as a rookie, not great but not awful. 45% his 2nd year, 47% his 3rd year & 48% his 4th and final NVA season.

  • @ryansack5198

24 is super old for a draft pick. How much can you really develop? After 2 years or so in the NBA, you are who you are at 26 years old.

As usual, getting drafted by the Clippers is the doom of any player who needs a bit more attention and care to develop. Didn't help that they got Blake a year or two later and went all in on the Lob City vision. Would have been interesting to see how he could have developed on a more competent franchise.

That’s BS claiming someone has no career because he’s out of a fkn show league (that’s what the NBA definitely is) If you think the NBA is the only professional league to have a remarkable career in might just show how limited the horizon of American people is. I think Al had enough competition in all his teams & leagues he played in, maybe even more fun, success and money. Cheers
