While it wasn't quite a tear jerker as little Philip, I did run a Oneshot for some regular players once that shook them up real good. We were between Campaigns, and so they had wanted to try being Evil Players for once. Now having never played Evil characters before, they still very much had the mindset of good guys. So we settled on them being an alternate history of their previous characters, where they lost against their Demon enemies - and became contractually bound to obey.
I think when we started, they didn't really understand the weight of the choice they made - being Heroes turned Fallen. But they sure did when they got to their first Mini-Boss, I had wanted them to face someone they knew, being the cheeky teen I was at the time. So I brought a Paladin whom they had worked with a lot in the past, and had come to rescue them. They called her friend, and for some characters she was even like a Mother or Sister figure. They refused to kill her, and attempted to stand against the will of their contracts.
It did not go well, they fell to the ground in agony and became helpless, as one of the Demons - their handler, appeared in the flesh to deal with the problem itself. To show them the price of defiance. They watched as it cut her in half, and belittled them for failing to obey, and that it would be one of the last times it'll ever accept such a rebellious episode. My whole chatroom was silent, I gave them a moment to process it all before I asked them out of character. "Are you guys alright?"
They confessed that they didn't expect someone they knew to show up, much less be cut down and dismissed so easily... It really hit them just how much they might encounter that'd they'd know, and have to destroy rather then save. We ended up deciding on doing a different set of characters somewhere else, so they could start fresh and be evil without those emotional attachments. They had a lot more fun after that, and it was a good little one shot. Years later, they often reflect on it and feel saddened that we didn't take the chance to continue, and possibly make a redemption story out of it all.

Now that's a way to get your players hooked HARD into the campaign, but just be ready for fire and brimstone from then the instant your bbeg shows up, cuz any, and I mean ANY chance at rp is probably out the window....unless you have one of those cold rage kinda people. Then be scared, very scared

Paladin: oh shit we left the body there.
Dm: ill entomb the soul of your friend into a vessel..like a neclace..or within..someone here.
Ooc: does that mean only one of us can hear him or?
    Dm: split personality.
    Paladin: ill do it..

I had a similar emotional reaction to something a DM of mine pulled. The campaign was inspired by a mixture of Skyrim's dragon plot and DnD's Blood War; with dragons gathering into a pair of factions and fighting each other with everything either side could muster. The party was me (a yuan-ti warlock), my brother (a minotaur barbarian), and a friend of ours (a changeling rogue). We first started out joining a local monster slaying faction, intending to clear out the nearby area so that the village the faction was based in could go hunting safely (as well as get us our first few character levels). After we reached level 3 or so the village was attacked by a young dragon and their minion horde; seeing as how we were no where near powerful enough to deal with the threat we decided to gather as many villagers as possible and get out of there before the main force arrived. Inside this group of refugees was a little girl that we would become attached to, my character in particular since he would put on illusory puppet shows when ever we rested to try to cheer her and the other children up. Eventually, through various ventures, would end up in a city ruled by a shapeshifting brass dragon. The party was hired by this dragon (not knowing it was a dragon in-game) to clear the roads of chromatic dragon influence, as it was hurting his city's ability to trade. During our preparations to start, we found out a conspiracy plot against the dragon-king. While on our way to warn him, he were attacked by a group of doppelgangers. We killed all but 1 and intimidated them into taking us to their hideout; after which we killed him and hid the body. At this point I had Mask of Many Faces and the Rogue had taken some illusion spells as an Arcane Trickster so we were fine getting into the compound, hiding the barbarian in a cart claiming it to be an experiment someone up top was working on. Unfortunately my brother (the barbarian) had gotten bored with all the intrigue/espionage and decided to attack the first person to investigate the cart; which resulted in us getting into a crowded fight, outnumbered 6:1. We ended up losing the barbarian, shocker, and continued our investigation; free of interruption. At this point we knew the doppelgangers were killing people and disguising themselves as them to eventually lead a revolt against the king. We ended up finding a dungeon with a bunch of holding cell, inside of which we found various NPCs we had interacted with throughout our stay so far; including but not limited to: the barbarian's girlfriend, my yuan-ti's love interest (a pet shop owner specializing in snakes), and...the little girl. Sadly we didn't really get to continue as the campaign was put on hiatus due to the DM leaving the country for Military training, but I don't think any of us will forget the cries of disbelief and outrage we all shared in the wake of that discovery.

Back in the days of AD&D, my best friend was running a ‘between campaign’ for me, which as the name implies was just a filler between great purposes (campaigns), etc..
It grew into an epic campaign however as his antagonist did something similar to mine.
He killed my servants and captured my wife, with my daughter being seen chasing after them, sword snd spells flashing.
I hunted and pursued him and finally caught him in a fortress in a volcanic mountain range and the fight was suspiciously one-sided as from the outset I opened on him with a natural 20 (we played face-to-face, so he SAW my every roll and I his).
I struck him down with my wife shackled snd bedraggled and looking on.
Blow after blow, and spells to incapacitate him as I went…
only to behold my daughters mutilated form at my feet when he fell.
Her final act was to touch my foot snd whisper, “… love you. Save mom…”
I roared and wept IRL, he cried too (it wasn’t meant to go that way).
He thought that we’d fight, my daughter would make me recognize her (easily enough), then we’d hunt down the BBEG together and wreck house.
However, my “Luck” with the rolls was in and I hit fast, critically, and hard.
In the end, my wife WAS rescued and my daughter was resurrected; but, she left to recover in a temple under the care of healers as she could not reconcile the absolute hatred toward ‘her’ that she’d seen on my face (my character’s face) and my actions, that day.
It kicked off a new campaign because the BBEG made the frequent and prolific use of “Clones” and “Magic Jar”.
    I have stories…

I once killed the party's pet T-Rex named Chihuahua (an inside joke for us) long story short they were so enraged at the BBEG they went on a killing spree that left a city vaporized (by accident), they dropped a small town in a sink hole (created by vaporizing said city), tortured a vampire assassin to death, that they promised to let live, and they left a politician next to the expanding sink hole with pockets so full of gold his movement speed was 1 inch well the sink hole's was 5 feet /hr. I was impressed they took the time to do the math so that the politician would be over taken by the hole in half an hour. Unless he stripped down to his underwear and ran for it, leaving the golf behind.

Honestly I think I would have dropped out of the second campaign I know that it's a game and I know the DM is a good DM and it was no hard feelings but I can't there's a reason I can't watch movies with dogs dying especially when you kill them yourself? Oh I would have been too mad and sad
