  • I've had problems sleeping my whole life, so when I discovered a weighted blanket made from sustainable materials, I decided to try it out! Here's my review.
    Check out Bearaby weighted blankets: bearaby-us.pxf.io/5bvK3D * They also have blankets for kids!
    I went with the more cooling "Tree Napper" that has a blend of Tencel and Organic Cotton.
    You can also find more sustainable and organic weighted blanket options here: mygreencloset.com/sustainable...
    How do weighted blankets work? Weighted blankets claim to have many benefits for anxiety, stress, sleep, and more.

    Im autistic, and weighted blankets and weighted lap pads have been such a lifesaver. For me its more of a sensory input thing, as well as a grounding therapy technique, and i never stopped to consider people outside the spectrum used them. They do help with sleep, and with panic, and theyre also a great comfort. Just make sure you get the correct weight for you!

    That is an interesting product. I have used natural 100 % cotton heavy blankets for years and find them to be warm, breathable and comfortable. Having a history of using natural cotton and wool blankets (Irish tradition) I do obtain a better sleep when there is fairly substantial weight to them.

    I stumbled upon this blanket when I started to think I needed some kind of help. Husband died last June, leaving me feeling uncomforted on almost every level. I too found the blanket claustrophobic at first, and I was used to tossing and turning. The blanket stopped all that, and I could feel myself settling down; giving in to sleep, and feeling comforted. It was relieving, also, that I was buying and using something made by a company that cares about sustainability. So that weight, so to speak, was also off my mind.

    I was hesitant to spend the money on a weighted blanket (this was quite a few years ago, when there were only a few suppliers and you couldn't get one for less than a few hundred dollars) so my mum made me one out of an old bedsheet and a 20lb bag of rice. It's treated me well, but I might upgrade to something with a more even weight distribution and I'm glad there's a more eco friendly option.

    I'm an OT student and lots of weighted, deep pressure items/actions are for people who require (more) sensory stimulation. I've always been a sensory seeker and I sleep with a pillow on top of my abdomen/belly area which helps me relax and fall asleep (studying for my boards). It's hot where I'm at too, but I like having something on me (like that sensation/deep pressure) so I sleep with a thin blanket and the pillow for extra weight. It's more commonly for kids with sensory issues, but everyone's body processes sensation differently. Reminds me when we had one day where our prof brought a bunch of sensory stuff and one was a weighted blanket and it was so comfy! (there are different blankets with different weights) Sorry for the long comment. Interesting take and for testing it, glad it helped!

    I haven't tried one, but I think it would help me. I find it easier to sleep during the winter when it is so cold so I have to have many blankets and therefor it gets heavy. The pressure is so cozy and calming. I do not like it when the summers are so hot that I can't sleep whit any blanket. Always miss having something on me then.
    I feel a little bit inspired to make one myself, seeing that it can be made out of only fabric. I have so much fabric that I have inherited from my grandmothers that I do not use, so it would be really fun if I could reuse it to something like this.

    I live with epilepsy and I have found that sleep is just as necessary as medication in my case and I believe the same is true for others living with similar disorders. Additionally, my epilepsy is aggravated by stress so I am always on the lookout for ways to lower cortisol levels.
    I also suffered a brain hemorrhage about 18 months ago which conversely made good sleep even harder to come by.
    All that to say I look forward to trying out this weighted blanket which I am really happy to learn that it can be cleaned at home and even happier to know it is environmentally friendly! @@DenverDave5280 ..did you happen to get a benefit from the weighted blanket? Raw garlic opposes cortisol. But I don't know if a person can get "physically addicted" to it.
      I feel like the blanket might help as it could drain tension out of the blood vessels in the brain which then allows sleep. Sleep is from relaxation of the brain blood vessels. I feel like a weighted blanket could in some cases cause more harm for skeletal muscle tension and lead to other neurological issues. I just got one but it's 20 pounds and it's definitely too heavy for me. I am rethinking things....

      Between living with stress-induced epilepsy, post concussion syndrome, and current events, I suspect my cortisol levels are high enough that most non-pharmaceutical therapies would have a minimal effect.
      I also noticed that repositioning myself under a weighted blanket was cumbersome to the point of requiring wakeful exertion. I know that might sound frivolous but it was an observation I made during the time I was using it.

    I struggle with really bad anxiety and depression. Nights get really tough and are generally when thoughts spiral. Hey, maybe if I get one of these it can prevent some panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. I also end up hugging myself trying to comfort myself lol. Maybe this’ll help

      There are actually some weighted blankets that can stay cool! The bearaby is a great example because it’s very breathable

    Wait. So... it has spandex? So I'm not sure how it's an eco-option?

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 4 lety +9

      Spandex is tricky when it comes to sustainability, while it is synthetic is does greatly improve the retention and longevity of clothing (and in this case a blanket, which with the heavy weight could easily stretch out too much and become ineffective). I have a video all about spandex, sustainability, and why it's often a "necessary evil" czcams.com/video/-W0lQ-rT30w/video.html

    This is a neat alternative. How easy is it to wash?

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 4 lety +3

      You can put it in the washing machine as long as it can handle the weight (apparently most modern standard and large capacity machines can - they have more info in their website about it if you want to make sure your machine can handle it). I found it a bit difficult to dry though since I like air-drying everything, but I put it out on a rack on a hot day and that worked well.
      I sleep with it over a sheet to help keep it cleaner and needing to wash it less.

      No, it's a t-shirt type material so not fluffy. It's pilled a tiny bit in a few areas (very minor) but that's about it.

    Studies on antidepressants show they are no more effective than placebo, so even if some studies don’t determine weighted blanket effectiveness over placebo (how can you even placebo a physical gravitational sensation? Study design sounds questionable) weighted blankets would arguably be as or more effective than an antidepressant.

    I love the look of the blanket and that it's eco-friendly but unfortunately, it's very expensive. This is the dilemma with ALL things eco-friendly, everything costs so much, and people can't afford that, so that's why their going for the cheap crap at Costco.....

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 3 lety +2

      I totally see your point, but unfortunately plastic and polyester is just so cheap. There is no way that sustainable materials like organic and fair trade certified cotton can be bought at the same price as plastic.

    • @halcyon-cg2eb
      @halcyon-cg2eb Před 3 lety

      @@MyGreenCloset Yes, I understand that. But the difference in price is so extreme! I really don't mind spending more on an item that is high quality and eco-friendly but I have to draw the line at 250 US $ for a blanket : )

    I enjoyed this video. I only recently started using a weighted blanket and it has been a game changer for me; it consistently helps me get better quality sleep. I had tried melatonin and other OTC sleep supplements which sometimes helped, but not always and they had side effects. By the way the 10% body weight suggestion for weighted blankets seems to be about right. I tried one that was closer to 20% and it was just too much. Note that the blanket in the video is quite expensive. Weighted blankets can be had for much less; it doesn't have to cost a lot to find out if a weighted blanket is right for you.

    Too bad someone gave you really bad advice about cbd and melatonin and breastfeeding. Human breast milk has insane amounts of endogenous cbd...your uterus has the highest concentration of cannabinoid receptors in the human body... babies literally need them from gestation to cradle to develop normally.

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 3 lety +4

      It's not just based on advice, doing my own research I also didn't find enough credible information and studies. Especially with CBD most of the studies available focus on THC and breastfeeding, there just isn't enough research available for me to feel comfortable taking it.
