    Psychology is such a big field it can be difficult figuring out what you want to specialize in. I studied youth work in college and that also has a ton of avenues to work in so I concentrated that with biblical studies, but even as I'm doing that I'm learning more about youth culture that has a lot more to do with how we can relate to them and invest in their lives.

    Hi Olivia! My name is Kate and I am a sophomore at my university. I have declared psychology about two weeks ago, and I am content. My intended career for psych was art therapy, but then wondered what else could I do. I found media psychology which made me smile to think about because Ive always wanted to work with the media, have an interest in business, and wanted my career to be creative. I'm also considering marketing for public relations as well since I did a lot of that in high school and loved it! I came across your video about media psych so thank you so much for sharing! Do you have any advice? Thank you!

      That's awesome, Kate! I def recommend taking a media effects course at your university if they have it. It should be in the Communications department (possibly in the sociology department instead). The good news is, all of those areas you mentioned (marketing, psych, media, business) are super interconnected! I'd say take as many of those different courses as you can. Of course, talking with an academic advisor is going to give you the best info for your specific program. Good luck!

    • @nopeee1000
      @nopeee1000 Před 3 lety

      Hi Alexa, it does depend. You can go into industry with the two degrees, but both fields are very different. So ultimately, it does depend on the career type that you want. I/Os are basically problem solvers in the workplace, so what you would be doing w that is very different from if you went into a large company with a media studies degree.
      I can’t say what level degree you need for media studies, but for I/O, if your plan is to go into industry or consulting, then go the masters route. If you plan on going into research/academia, then go the PhD route.
      Lmk if you have more questions in regards to I/O Psych!

    • @alexisesomonu430
      @alexisesomonu430 Před 4 lety

      I am a pysch Major at uc Merced and at Merced it’s great for research. The only problem is Merced puts a lot of focus on their Stem majors than Humanities majors. That may be the same for Davis. Berkeley and Los Angeles have great psychology programs

    • @oliviasimonephd
      @oliviasimonephd  Před 4 lety

      Hi Kalista! I think I saw you message me on Instagram but I totally forgot to reply 😅 sorry! So Davis has a great psych program for undergrad. It's our most popular major! I learned SO MUCH STUFF and I honestly go back to my textbooks and notes from class on projects I'm working on now in grad school.
      Davis does not have an I/O psych program however there is an Organizational Comm class taught by a woman who has actually worked in that field, and then sociology also has some courses that are basically I/O psych (in case you want to get a feel for that area specifically).
      The way the major itself is set up allows students to take classes in Cognitive, Social, Developmental, and Biological areas of psych. There are also courses like personality psychology, abnormal psychology, psych of the self, psych of religion, and many more topics depending on the current faculty. I also recommend seeing what courses human development, comm, and soc are offering (my media effects course was in comm, but it used mainly psych theories!).
      Like Alexis said, the program is great to set you up to succeed in grad school. There are multiple stats courses directed specifically for psych majors (stuff you'll actually use in grad school) as well as the research methods course (Psych 49) that honestly had me better prepared for my Grad school research methods course than some of my peers' master's programs research methods courses.
      So yes I would recommend Davis for psych. Quarter system is difficult but if you read the textbook, show up to class, and study for exams, I promise you you'll be fully prepared to pursue grad school in psych or a related area. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

      I recommend looking at the graduate psych programs at your university to start getting a feel for the lingo. Typically a PhD will be in the psych department, but then you specialize in an area (cognitive, social, clinical, developmental, I/O, etc.)

    • @nopeee1000
      @nopeee1000 Před 3 lety

      Also: Most important thing though, just make sure you look at the program description, check if they include an internship as part of the program, look at the curriculum break down, and the focus of the program (whether it’s equal research and applied, or one versus the other). And feel free to reach out if you have further questions! (:
