  • Asad Umar, Pakistan's federal minister for planning, development, reform, and special initiatives, will provide an update on the status of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and what his government's plans are with CPEC moving forward. He will also speak about Pakistan's policy focus on geoeconomics, and on its broader development plans at a moment when the economy is facing a series of challenges.

@@healthnherbs9997 I am so sorry to inform you that Gilgit - Baltistan was part of the kingdom of Jammu & Kashmir that belonged to Maharaja Hari Singh & it legally acceded to India by signing a Treaty of Accession in 1947. Later on Pakistan invaded Jammu & Kashmir & has been occupying Gilgit - Baltistan (which is legally part of the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh). Gilgit cannot get any investment from any international organisation because it is illegally occupied by Pakistan. Only China, which is also illegally occupying parts of the erstwhile kingdom of Jammu & Kashmir is giving money to build CPEC in Gilgit. CPEC in Gilgit is doomed to fail because at some point of time, India will have to take back its legal territory from both Pakistan & China. Unfortunately, the infrastructure of Gilgit will be the first in line to get totally destroyed, because -
      1) Infrastructure projects cannot be built on disputed territory like Gilgit - matlab kabze ki zameen par aap kuch bana nahi sakte without permission of the legal malik(India) and the malik has the right to take down anything that he didn't give permission to build.

EU and the US are far more forgiving than China. Chinese loans tend to have different terms; one's of really high interest and that threaten sovereignty if not paid back. Its happened in Sri Lanka, and also in your home country. I'm an Indian and dont want to be preachy, but tell me one thing; are you comfortable with a foreign government owning assets in your country that they can use for their own disposition? CPEC is also extremely asymmetric, wherein China will benefit by creating a trade surplus; let alone making PK a vassal state. I think the best route for PK, is open trade with India and the rest of the world, whoever they are. Ummahdom has no place in International Trade; and has only created choke points in the past. So keep that at home.

Superb analysis. I hope it does not come to war. It would be nice if India strikes peace with China, as you suggested. It would be equally good to make peace with Pakistan, also. It should not be difficult to find a solution to the Kashmir issue. I am sure there is a solution which will be acceptable to all. I think the sub continent can do with peace. It needs to divert energies in the improving of the economy and the well being of the people.

And anyway, even if things remain the way they are currently....theres no indicator that suggests pak would be able to pay back unless they really take the inflation up by a good 2%.
