I never liked fuzz pedals until I reached the stage of playing when I learned how to play with my amp on a higher gain setting and use my volume knob to clean up. After I got used to that method of tone tweaking a fuzz pedal became a totally different effect. With the volume rolled down you get that subtle fuzz warmth with that edge. You can play full chords and the fuzz mostly stays out of the way unless you dig in hard. Then you can roll up for that Hendrix violin tone for the big single notes that bloom. Just like you guys illustrated so well in this video. Another important lesson I learned that also applies with other effects is subtly. Subtle use of chorus, flange and reverb also make them so much more useful.

I've been wanting to add a fuzz pedal to my board. I believe it was either Josh Scott or one of Pedal Show guys that said that most fuzzes have a lot fewer components than other drive pedals, so as a result the way that all those work together matters a lot more.
I think that applies to fuzzes as a unit as well. A specific fuzz has its own sound, but the guitar you have, the amp, the other pedals. All that affects how it sounds too, more than a lot of other pedals.

I have 8 pedals on my board. 3 are fuzz, a muff, a super fuzz and a fuzz face, the boost is a line driver. Can't get enough of the stuff! The boost is after all the fuzz so I can account for any volume loss.

Fuzz in context is great, it can also help to mask a weak hand. But some artists use it too often

Every tone is useful in it's own way, it can make or break a song. I don't really use fuzz much, but it's fun and necessary in certain songs. I especially like it with added octave feature. Gets a cool Hendrix, SRV vibe.

I love Tim so so much! He was perfect for this. He's always open minded but doesn't mind admitting he's hunting for particular tastes and colors. So he was just like, "sell me on it!"(the premise of the video) he accepted immediately that Rob and Rhett could find HIS FUZZ rather than fuzz in a general sense.
They both know Tim pretty well. I would argue they picked his fuzz, before he joined them!
    👏👏👏👏👏👏

In the 70's I used a fuzz to get a dirty tone when I was playing through larger amps in a smaller gig. Now I can see they can even add nice tone to amps at the edge of distortion. Several of the amps I had back then only had one volume control and no input and master volume controls. Great video!

Great timing for this video. I just ordered the board and bits to try building my first clone pedal. I ordered a Fuzz Face kit, as it seems to be a fairly simple thing for a first build project. I really appreciate the lesson on how to work with a fuzz, and what the guitar controls bring to it. I'll be getting a lot more out of it now.
Now, if I only had a living situation where I could turn anything above 2... I'd love if you could do a video about getting a decent tone at apartment/bedroom/hotel room volume levels. I did pick up, from Rhett, the turn the amp up and the guitar vol down trick. That works pretty well; but if I want to use my vol pot to control the fuzz, it may be a while before I find out what it can really do.

It’s fun to experiment with effects and try stuff out, not everything will appeal to you, but it’s fun to try
And there are pedals that really suit one player that won’t work for another.
So if a pedal doesn’t work for me, I don’t write it off for everybody, just isn’t my thing.
Same if I love a pedal, I know it doesn’t work for everyone
So my advice is to keep an open mind & try it out.
(And while there are some cool sounds in this video, they don’t fit what I do, but that’s okay-if we all used the same sounds & pedals it would get boring.)
    Cool video.

Back in the 70s, I played a Maestro “Fuzztain” and a MuTron Phasor. That fuzz sounded enormous and, with the MuTron, it sounded like clouds of doom. The guitar I used was an Ovation Breadwinner, which had active tone controls. Rolling the tone knob back boosted the bass freqs, which made that fuzz sound huge.

I liked what I heard. And I had a couple bucks to spend. So I went to my local guitar store and checked out the fuzzes they had in stock in the range up to $120.
I loved the Hammertone best, so I picked one up. I've played it all night. Next I'm going to take it to a local blues jam and see how it goes. I especially like the clean tones with the guitar at about 2 and the fuzz down low, and as a bonus I can finally get a really nice slide tone with a glass slide! I love how the notes sing.
Thanks for showing all the awesome things you can do with a fuzz!

  • @SharpEdgeStandardOfficial

LOVE fuzz! Folks that hate it are thinking closed minded while perceiving it as wide open and/or in-ur-face. So many great tones were crafted with fuzz. Fuzz requires experimenting and creativity. Some folks are afraid of challenge and don’t know what they’re missing out on
