    That is the whole point. The system is designed so that Routines are on the same level as solo's. So yes, a solo can beat a routine, but at the same time, a routine can be used to win a battle, especially if your opponent doesn't have it. The system is designed so there is NO WAY to exploit it. You just have to prove that your better than your opponent in Foundation, Originality, Dynamics, Execution or Battle response.

    Thats my hero right there .. my main inspiration for b-boying from the first time I saw him b-boy way back during the 80s at movies here in Apartheid South Africa. Thanks KEN ... you and b-boying changed my life ...

    yo this interview is dope. I could probably watch the whole two hours. haha
    Ken's been a cat I've admired for a minute and this shows him in a light we don't often see.

    Ken Swift's interview reminds me of Bruce Lee's passion in his "Be Like Water My Friend" interview. The common link here is the originality in what they say and mean. Right from the heart.

    Hey bro, I know what your saying, and believe me, I love the art of breakin which requires no judges or competitions in the first place. But you gotta understand, its more than points, it's more than art. It's about people lives, their future's their families. It's about the respect we deserve. It's about creating a future for this culture and all who lives in it and by it. It's bigger than you & me, corrupt judges and wack jams. It's something we all will face one day. Perhaps we'll talk somday

    It's interesting that they start off with Domkey's quote, but I think it's a good place to start. That dude's chill, and he does it for the love of the dance. It's always cool to hear what Ken Swift has to say too. There are a lot of OGs, but not many with the composure and intellect that Ken has.

    I see talent shows and shit, seeing 5 year old winning just because they are so young, and not judged on are their actual level. Before this video i was already getting pissed off at that and this guy just preached it for me.

    lol damn Dyzee I have had a bunch of talks with you about this system.
    To clarify, say two bboys who are PERFECT do not mess up at all, but one has slightly tighter footwork so he get's a 5 and the other gets a 4, what happens in the system if like Ken Swift mentions, the bboy with that "fire inside" that he can see as an experienced judge, loses because of point total of 1? Is all his passion that is unmeasurable by score unaccounted for?

  • @Sokyujo
    @Sokyujo Před 11 lety

    I also still don't understand routines in R16 system. Either way the scoring system over incentives crews to use them or de-incentives crews to use them. If they score extra points towards a round, why not do a TON and gain point advantage that way (crews like jinjo and vagabonds would kill)? And if not, then why waste crew energy on routines and battles just turn into 1v1 groups.
    Can you help me understand how you found (if you have in the system) the middle ground for this problem?

  • @Thebusypersoncoach
    @Thebusypersoncoach Před 11 lety

    @Sokyujo I see what you mean but even though passion does matter, it comes down to who's the better dancer. But passion alone doesn't win battles your skill does. And if your really that passionate and you wanna win, you should be getting high scores anyways

    While bboying is something I love, I come at this from a poetry background. Apart from corny, hallmark cards and rhyming, sentimental bullshit, hardly anyone in America cares about poetry. Our competitions get judged by 1-3 people who you never get to see face-to-face or call out, and really successful poets make pizza money from their books. It's a second job, and despite some obvious biased decisions, it still means we do it for us, not for judges. I totally get what you're saying though.

  • @Sokyujo
    @Sokyujo Před 11 lety

    I am also saying the bboy who got the 5 shows little to no "fire inside" and just seems like a technically awesome robot. As I'm sure you know you can hit a beat JUST to do it and not really feel the music. In this case what is Ken Swift talking about then? Would he still have to pick the bboy with a 5 in foundation rather than 4? Even though the one with a 4 is clearly more passionate and in the momment? What is the value he is talking about worth in this system?

  • @Sokyujo
    @Sokyujo Před 11 lety

    I feel like this interview is exactly why I am uncomfortable with the R16 judging system, if two bboys are PERFECT and don't mess up at all, but one has better "dynamics" or "foundation" how is it fair that the colder dancer wins over the guy that
    "wants it more"?

  • @Sokyujo
    @Sokyujo Před 11 lety

    You sort of averted my problem with it though. Like you said, Routines are on the same level as solo's. So, a solo can beat a routine if its good enough. You said that "a routine can be used to win a battle, especially if your opponent doesnt have it." But how does that make sense? You said they are on the same level. That means if your opponent doesnt have a routine and just throws out a dope solo round, it's worth the same thing. So why waste energy on group routines and just do dope solos?

    @DyzeeDiaries Před 11 lety

    So, your not comfortable if a bboy who is a better dancer, with better footwork OR is just technically better cuz his style and moves is more dynamic... beats a guy who just want's it more?
    So all someone needs to do, is act like they want it more and they should win?
    Just trying to clarify what your saying.

  • @oscwildle1
    @oscwildle1 Před 11 lety

    Judging an art that has no real point system must be a pain in the ass. We all have our own prefrences as to what the ultimate bboy is so the audience and judges will never agree. The competitve aspect of bboying is a double edged sword

    @seymourglass26 Před 11 lety

    Dyzee, you're mad dope, but emotion is part of any type of expression. To downplay it for technicality's sake is confusing, and the old style of judging was simply based around which dancer moves you most. It was judges trusting their guts. If there was an obvious bias or corruption issue in judging, I'd be all for a regulated system, but I just don't see that kind of bullshit happening often. Nonetheless, I respect you in a big way, but I feel art is about heart, not points.
