  • Today the long awaited Harbor Freight Survival Knife Testing. I put this knife through its paces and try to break it in two. Will it survive the tests?

    Excellent review, thanks!
    On mine..... first I removed the set screw and blade, then added epoxy to keep anything from wiggling loose. Also added better matches and gear to the kit. The sheath is flimsy for sure, but I took some sheet metal (cut from an old license plate) and made a protective tip reinforcement. On the front side I polished the metal to make a sort of signal mirror, and on the back side I glued a section of sand paper for sharpening or striking matches. Burn some holes with a hot awl or use grommets and you can attach a signal whistle & some more cordage for whatever. Just my 2-cents ✌️

      I used two mix JB weld to attach the blade more firmly and that also water proofs that connection! Even stronger than epoxy.

      JB weld....drill and pin blade

  • @mikehoward8201

    Another guy has a video where after gluing the blade in, he throws it about a dozen times, then he makes a spear out of a straighter stick than you use and he throws the spear, sticking it in a dead tree several times. The blade and point came through with flying colors, so you could abuse it more and it will hold up.

      @mataooutdoors  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah I've been thinking about doing another video where I do some modifications to it and put it through some worse abuse. Several people have mentioned the jb weld trick now, it seems like a pretty good idea to try out.

    The spear function alone makes this worth the $10. Could use this to spear an animal or fish without having to risk losing or damaging your primary (expensive) knife. I would dump the contents out of the handle and fill it with paracord for this purpose. Good review!

      Thank you! Yeah I was completely surprised it actually held up as a spear.

    I'm pretty sure this knife would be my number one pick-- especially if it were the only one on the list.

    Great video! Either CZcams never sent me a notification or I missed it. I would have watched it before now. I like hearing other people's opinions of this cheap knife. I love the knife for some reason, but can't explain exactly why.

    I just got one too. Still in packing but plan on drilling thru and using a pin as well as jbweld. For the price it’s a great buy.

    Try wraping the handle with Paracord. Adds padding and gives you a length of Paracord.
    Take blade off and JB Weld the handle in with set screw

      Good idea! I've heard the JB weld trick a few times now, I'm going to have to give that a try. Thanks for the tips!

    sweet, glad to see it turned into a spear. looks fun. i might try it too. constructive suggestion: try to be mindful of the "uh" and "uhm" and "ah" it's just a habit that takes a bit to break yourself of.

    • @mataooutdoors
      @mataooutdoors  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh Im so aware of it, its drives my nuts, I try to edit out as much as I can, but I will try to be more mindful of it as well when filming.

      @HollywoodTacticool Před 5 měsíci

      @@mataooutdoors you can try practicing on a daily basis. once you break yourself of the habit, it gets a lot easier. of course it's easy to always fall back on it, especially if you're speaking extemporaneously and thinking of what you're saying. but at least you can get rid of the factor of just pure habit

    Is it worth re tempering to see if

    • @mataooutdoors
      @mataooutdoors  Před 4 měsíci

      eehh I don't think so, could try to re-temper it to get a harder edge, but the steel used is not going to hold up to much no matter what you do. Just need to be willing to re-sharpen it often I'm affraid

    For $9.99, I think you can get more than $9.99 out of that knife. It could be an ok truck knife, do you want to use your more expensive knife for splitting wood?

    • @mataooutdoors
      @mataooutdoors  Před 21 dnem

      You are right, you can get more than 10 bucks out of that knife for sure, but eehhh, Id still rather have one quality knife that I can do more with. But...this knife is for sure not as bad as everyone claims it to be.

    When you're poor homeless that's probably the best value you're going to get I have bought many of them use many of them gave many of them away the other stuff you can do to improve on them but for 8 or $10 you can't buy nothing American that'll hold up like that and the more knife for 10 or 12 bucks it's a nice little knife but it won't hold up to what this holds up to once you guys leave it alone and give it a pad on the back every once in a while it's easy to sharpen it's easy to fix
