@ns658: I use retinol 2-3 hours after I’ve moisturized. You want to apply it to ‘dry skin.’ My friend is a dermatologist & she shared this beauty tip. I’m very careful about putting retinol around my eyes. I’d say use a retinol that isn’t very strong and apply once every few nights. There are some retinols that specifically state for the eye area. I have yet to put any products on my eyelids but I hear Olay has a cream & gel for the eye area and one can put it on the eyelids. I haven’t tried that yet.

I can’t see that ointment being a barrier cream/ if the Retin a hot in it-ouch. I am also supposed to use press and seal to shut my eyes at night because they don’t shut all the way and causes dry eye areas. I’m afraid even with the ointment the Retin A could travel up under the Press snd Seal

I use retinol (adapelen cream .1%) and I've mostly tried to avoid the eyelids when applying, but I might have applied there sometimes without noticing. I have dry eyes, but also suffered from it after LASIk surgery, it's just that around 6 months after starting with retinol it has become worse.
Is it likely that the cause of the worsening of symptoms is the retinol? I have my doubts since I've never felt any burning or irritation anywhere on my face or around the eyes.

YES! you have to give up Retinal completely. I am living proof it gave me severe dry eye over 3 years of use. I used a Retin-A prescription for the same amount of time I developed dry eye. I had no clue it was doing this to me. At first I slapped it on my face and very subtly over time I "developed" sensitive eyes to my eye cream, then my face cream the everything starting with red eye's and burning an hr or so after applying my creams. I NEVER ever put retin-A around my eyes. Then I started to read in the last 6 months about the correlation between the two, even tho you carefully avoid your eyes or even use vaseline it can't help but move up to your eyes, it get's on your pillow while you sleep and then you turn and it rub's into your eyes. Also it goes into your system as It can cause birth defects. Over time my lid margin became thick on the bottom and top so much that if I wanted to wear eyeliner I would have a white line under my eyelashes because it was so swollen. I had to give up makeup completely. I had extensive dry eye appointments with lipi flow and I am on Xiidra and heat with no reason why you just have dry eye ((( 2 weeks ago I decided for 1 month to stop using the Retin-A and see if my eyes get better, well it's made a huge difference!! the lid margin is so much thinner. My eyes are not red and they barely burn. I wish the eye doctor would have told me to stop Retin-A just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps someone at least think twice about using it at all if you have dry eye. This has been a nightmare for me.

I thought maybe I could just do it on the sides of my cheeks but after reading your experience it’s helped me make the decision to stop…as I have sensitive eyes to start with. @@27kjh Hey there, My eyes are doing awesome but I think mostly because of IPL, Nulids, my i-tear devise and a few tricks. I have also stopped retin-A at night (will never do that) but I apply short contact for 1 hr 3x a week and it's working great, I see a difference. I wash then apply pea size amount all over avoiding eyes of course then I go off and watch TV or read, I put nothing on top because it is being washed off in an hr. Then I wash off and put my moisturizer on and I am going to stay with that because I think it really works. There are some studies saying you get almost the same benefit as leaving on all night )))) I don't think honestly the Retin-A caused it I think I had dry eyes and the Retin-A made it WORSE. Try the short contact for a week and see how you feel. Hope you eye's feel better and thank you for chatting with me. Oh and I did realize that I was touching my eyes CONSTANTLY all day without knowing it. I have lotion on my hands constantly, I touch my face with cream, makeup etc constantly and then because my eyes are always hurting I am trying to massage my lids to make more water/oil so I was transferring (including retin-a probably) to my eyes. I stopped that and I really think that has helped tremendously.

For the sake of doing my best to avoid bad ingredients for the eyes, I'm going to consider my current eye cream, 100% pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream, my safest option on the market. Especially if we take into consideration how the product is not PURE rosehip oil, but rather, mixed in and diluted with other seemingly harmless ingredients. It's practically impossible to avoid ALL of these bad ingredients.

My point above was that if retinoids are so bad for the eyes due to migration during sleep this could have been offered as a compromise to still allow for anti aging and good eye health.
