    Having taken place annually since 1851 Pietermaritzburg's Royal Show is South Africa's oldest and largest agricultural exbition.
    The Show is held in late May through early June each year -- the duration being 10 days including two full weekends.
    With it's well manicured gardens, two streams traversing the grounds and upwards of a thousand trees the Royal Show promises to afford the 220 000 visitors a pleasant and informative experience.
    The Royal Show is committed to introducing 'town to country' and has an eclectic mix of displays and activities. Amongst others, local and internationally acclaimed performing artists.
    The South African Defence Force with military tattoos and the like, Equestrian Events, Dog Championships, a fireworks display and more take place every year.
    The Royal Show attacts exhibitions of all major tractor and implement manufaturers.
    As well as a range of ancillary activities.
    There are also numerous and displays covering the industial, commercial and government service sectors.
    The livestock section hosts a number of national championships each year where most breeds are well represented in the competive sections.
    In line with Royal Shows elsewhere in the Commonwealth, the breed societies are given marketing and branding exposure via expo, to provide current and potential breeders and commercial farmers with pertinent information as well as to educate the overall visitor mix, both young and old, many of whom are 'town folk'.
    The Sheep and Wool Expo is acknowledged to be an important event for the entire supply chain involved in natural fibres. The Expo amongst others displays Alpacas, indigenous goats, various sections catering for the agricultural research council, daily sheep shearing and of course the end product.
    Throughout its history the Royal Show has focussed on future farmers and the youth and every effort is made to add value to agriculture by enthusing and creating opportunities for youngsters interested in showmanship and livestock.
    The Royal Show carcass competition is regarded as being one of the premier red meat events of it's kind in the South Africa. Having achieved a world record price of R3000/kg for the winning lamb carcass in 2007. The event caters for farmers for breeders and for buyers of red meat alike.
    Boer Goat classes have been introduced with entries recieved from as far a field as the Northern Cape and the North West Provinces.
    The Royal Show features Speed Chainsaw Cutting and Chainsaw Carving competitions by manufacturer sponsonsed teams.
    The Arts and Crafts Section probably the largest display of it's kind in Africa encourages both young and old to be creative.
    The 2100 square metre Food Hall and demonstration kitchen illustrates the entire food chain, from farm field to dining table via exhibits and demonstrations. This display alone attracts in excess of 100 000 visitors each year.
    Not forgetting the fun fair, any visit to the Royal Show should prove to be an informative, educational and fun-filled experience, for all.
