    David was pointing out how bad the rust is on the ‘73 and the ‘72… In a winter salt spreading Midwest state like Indiana, those two trucks would look like Swiss cheese!
    I suggest: sell the wrecker bed and cab, shorten the frame, put the orange and white cab and shortened bed on it and make a rock crawler.
    AWESOME STUFF!

    That's a great buy for $2500
    I would definitely build it up for an off road recovery rig, and put a Cummins in the front for power but to also help add weight to the front to balance the weight distribution more equally from the heavy back. And with the right tires it won't sink in the snow, Rory with his Trail mater tow truck and his newer blue one do snow recovery's all the time with little issues.
    And "TFL off road" should sponsor the build, since they will be calling on Dave more to get them unstuck on Tumble weed ranch 😁

    always good to see David in the videos. Hes quite impressive with his automotive knowledge. i had a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins and 6 speed transmission. absolutely loved that truck. i was running 35 miles a day to work so i got a Jeep TJ as a daily driver and let the Dodge set and only used it periodically. That was the beginning of the end. it got a lot of rust, then the sending unit went on the fuel tank and i thought the tank was 1/4 but it sucked it dry. it only had about 120000 miles on it. ended up selling it. couldn't get it running again.

    What an awesome find of a tow truck! You should definitely build this up and use it around the farm as a recovery vehicle. If it were me I would get rid of a couple vehicles to help fund this cool 80’s tow rig!! Bigger tires help with how heavy it is in the dirt, maybe remove some of the towing features and replace them with winches…good luck on your decision

  • @BF1-P

  • @Cotton088
    @Cotton088 Před rokem +24

    I think you could use that one as a heavy recovery vehicle and make a separate light recovery vehicle. You could shorten the frame lift it and add big tires. It would also be cool to have a hydraulic winch on the front in case you did get stuck. You can use the lift boom for all kinds of stuff around the farm.

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck Před rokem +1

      All very true. He has the tractor as well, but I could see this boom being a nicer tool in most cases for lifting. The boom is extendable as well.
      Good call!

    • @garysarratt1
      @garysarratt1 Před rokem +1

      Bucket up front does lifting, as well as 3-point hitch on the back. You can get forks, hay roll stingers, “hog hangers”, etc. that attach right on in a few minutes. I don’t think any wrecker body like this is useful on the farm. If the tractor gets stuck, the solution is a bigger tractor to pull it out, especially in deep mud. If he had a big tractor, a 2 ¼ ton wrecker may be able to pull it out but most likely have to wait a couple days to let the ground dry first, a cat is the best thing for big tractors.
      All this has been my experience for nearly 40 years; I haven’t farmed for 15+ years, so there may be lots of better solutions now.

    • @shitloveaduck
      @shitloveaduck Před rokem +1

      @@garysarratt1 - sounds about right to me. I was thinking along the lines of mechanical work too. Even just having to move a fluid filled tire. It’s something the tractor can do as well. Better 2 options vs 1.

    • @Cotton088
      @Cotton088 Před rokem

      @@garysarratt1 I was thinking more of off the farm use but there can be uses there too. Using snatch blocks (pully) can multiply pulling ability as long as you have a way to anchor. Anchoring isn't hard if you have the right equipment stored on the truck. There are wheel chocks that dig in when under load. Some wreckers have hydraulic chocks in the rear. I'm not a farmer but my granddad was. I've seen him winch out big equipment with a Warn 8274 with multiple snatch blocks. Once, so much load was applied, all four wheels were off the ground on the tow vehicle. It was anchored to a tree.

    • @Ishkatan
      @Ishkatan Před rokem

      Keep it as a tow truck for TFL recoveries. Seems strange to cut down the frame after it was extended. And I love the yellow color. So maybe make the wheels wells bigger and put on off road tires. Maybe take off some weight elsewhere?

David I like that you’re a down to earth person who doesn’t need/want vehicles with all of the bells & whistles, which most are disposable not rebuildable. Only if the newer generation of people had your mentality we would be better off. Rebuild the 454’s. You could probably sell the wrecker boom to help fund both, Yellow & the two tone in the garage projects. David you have everything there to make your dream(s) come true.🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

    Paul of Fab Rats is doing a square-body wrecker right now. I'd watch a few of his videos for ideas. If you use that truck, you'll have to cut it up. Most notable are the two front fenders. They have to be chopped and V'ed inwards towards the front so you can see your tires approach, which a square body won't allow. Now, if one wants to see a seriously massive off-road recovery wrecker check out the monster Matt's building on his channel. Rory Irish has a channel, Trail mater, and he has a square body wrecker too. Both Rory and Matt use all-electric wenches. Like yours, Paul's rig has a hydraulic winch bed, but he has added additional electric wenches to pull from multiple directions.

  • @shitloveaduck
    @shitloveaduck Před rokem +1

    I’m sure this was already mentioned, but there’s a lot of comments to read already.
    A Cummins swapped off-road wrecker. You can lighten that deck up a lot by strategically cutting holes in it where the support isn’t needed, even on the top deck. The winches and boom are the key pieces. You will be too tall to use it as a typical tow truck anymore anyway. Definitely shorten it back down and get rid of that tool box. Have a couple of very heavy canvas recovery bags strapped to the deck or in place of any of the lower boxes. The duals really won’t be needed if you have lightened the deck enough. Most 40s will be about 2/3s the width of the duals anyway.
    Just trying to think out of the box and take what you already have into consideration. There’s dozens of ways to go.
