    By the far the best explanation on CZcams. This is an add for Garmin. All of Garmin antennas are internal. There are no pucks for the graphs, trolling motors and subsequently, no need for the Neama, unless maybe I add the telemetry for my 300r merc.

    Patrick, great video and just in time for me! You just saved me several hundred dollars! I'm running three Elite-9 Ti2 units. I want to tie the two helm units together with an Ethernet cable, but I want to know if I can still link my "base unit" via WiFi to my bow unit while the base unit is linked via Ethernet to the second helm unit. Since these units only have one Ethernet port, I'd need an expansion port to hardwire all three together. But if I can still connect two units via Wifi, all I need is a short Ethernet cable and I'm in business! Currently, I have to reassign my WiFi connections every time I stop to fish, and every time I pick up to move. It is a PAIN!

  • @pumpkin971
    @pumpkin971 Před 2 dny

    I am just learning things about ethernet and NMEA and need to learn fast since I am re-doing my boat GPS system. I luv your explanation and comprehensive enough. But I do have a question: when you connect the backbone to the power source via switch, will the unit like your Lowrance GPS will have power too since the backbone is connected to the Lowrance GPS. The Lowrance GPS has its own power port for connection to a power source. Is there a need to connect the Lowrance or Garmin GPS directly to a power source? Or you just abandon the power port connection of the GPS since it will be powered from the backbone connection.

The simrad nep2 hub only has 5 ethernets i think i need more.

    Awesome video, The only question that I have is that on other videos that I have watched, they recommend putting the power cable close to the center point of the backbone. Does that really matter? I have (2) Lowrance HDS 9 gen 2 touch screens. Do you recommend running both the ethernet cable between the 2 units and also the NMEA setup. I am installing a Motorguide Xi5 pinpoint trolling motor and cleaning up a lot of the wiring at the same time. Thanks for the great video!

    • @NitroZ18Fishing
      @NitroZ18Fishing  Před 3 lety

      Thank you, I appreciate that!...and I’ve never had any issues with having the power “T” anywhere in the backbone, as long as circuit is terminated correctly you’ll be good to go!...I would definitely recommend doing both the Ethernet between both graphs, and also the NMEA 2K network, they both serve a good purpose on most boats, let me know if I can help with anything else, and thanks for watching!

  • @sebell69

    I got several questions and a few observations that I would like to have you clarify if you a so incline.
    Ethernet is a protocol (in the data world) what type of cable it uses is another thing is it 4 pairs? 3 pairs, 2 pairs?? is it 1 pair for power and 1 cable for data like the old video cameras would use?
    As far as the Nmea 2000 (and 0183) is a token ring (old LAN technology). What kind of cable does it use? 4 pairs, 3, 2 or 1 pair for power and 1 for data?
    What type of encapsulation does the data use? (or What communication protocol?)?
    Thank you for your video you been more enlighten than most how2 on CZcams or even written explanations have been about Nmea and "ethernet" for marine use

    Since the NMEA 2000 network is powered, do you need individual power cords for each fish finder, or will they receive power from the back bone?
    Also can you extend NMEA cables if they are too short?

Do you know the cable length on the NMEA starter kit? For NMEA power on the fuse block, should I just pick an empty slot and ring tie or spade tie into that and use the inline fuse in the starter kit?

    • @NitroZ18Fishing

    If I understand the guidelines correctly, power to the network should be as close to the centre of the network as possible. Additionally the backbone does not need to be made up of directly connected T-connectors. Cable can be run between connectors thus reducing the amount of cable running through the boat as a cluster of devices can be T'd at the console, and only one backbone cable run back to connect to a cluster of devices at the bow, stern etc.

    • @NitroZ18Fishing

    With multiple units networking via the Ethernet cable. Would you then just need to connect unit #1 to the Nema 2000 or do you still have to connect all units to the Nema 2000? I just bought a elite TI2. I have a Gen 2 touch @ the bow and the elite @ the console. Question Lowrance says I can use NEMA 2000 to send waypoints to the bow from the console and vice a versa. I had ethernet hooked up before between a Gen 2 Touch 7 at the bow and the 9 at the console before I purchased the Elite TI2. The TI2 does not have a port for ethernet. Any thoughts on how to exchange info.

      yea unfortunately you're limited to NMEA with your setup, but they should be able to share waypoints through that (make sure both units are on)...with the Ti2 made for "wireless networking", there's no way to utilize Ethernet between it and the Gen2...now if you had multiple Ti2's that's a different story...hope that helps!
