  • When I was 8 years old, I picked up a copy of my sister's "Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare. I was reading American comics and watching Disney films in English by that age, because I wasn't satisfied with the Danish voiceover work.
Reading it, and not being able to understand it, I decided that Shakespeare was not for me.
The irony of my relationship to the Bard now... A previous video of mine is from "Julius Caesar" itself and now, I throw my love and attention on "Hamlet".
As a Danish citizen with Pakistani heritage, the question of identity has always loomed in the back of my mind. Who am I? What am I? What am I supposed to do and for whom?
As an actor based in a country with a largely homogeneous population, I've spent most of my years in this business feeling out of place. I've always been wildly ambitious and I will never apologize for that. For me, one of the ultimate roles to play is Hamlet. A "Danish character" known across the world, I find that there are many things I can connect with when it comes to the thoughtful and doubtful man.
When called upon to avenge his father's death, Hamlet goes through a lot of thinking throughout the play and I am reminded of how many times I've been in fights with myself about what to do with my career and how to go about it.
Enter this scene. Some very great actors have performed this scene all over the world and some are on CZcams, if you search for "Hamlet Hecuba speech". I wanted to present my version of it and put myself and my crew to the test.
A one take shot of this scene (to honor its theatrical background), while also taking inspiration from the medium of film, where the possibilites of getting up close and personal to really capture the more "quiet emotions" inspired by the work of Danny Cohen, especially in the 2012 version of "Les Miserables". The shot you're viewing was the 6th and final take. I was struggling between this one and the former, since both had great things in them, but in the end, one must choose.
I hope you choose to view the scene in its entirety and, if you feel like it, do give it a like and a comment. I'd love to engage in conversation with you about your thoughts on the work. :-)
This piece is meant to be shown to casting directors in the UK, the US and other parts of the world, while also informing people in Denmark that I'm here and I'm willing to put my everything into whatever creative project you deem worthy of my skills.
I've embraced my fortunate privilege of merely living 40 minutes away by car from "Hamlet's Castle" called Kronborg, so I opted to shoot it on location on the other side of the moat. It just felt right. It made everything more difficult as well, but that's alright. Playing Hamlet was never meant to be easy. ;-)
May you have a wonderful day, wherever in the world you are!

      Thank you, Maribel!
I'm quite fond of the result as well and it's always a bit tricky, when you produce something that you know will be good, because you don't want to come off as smug or self-absorbed...
I just genuinely felt that I could do this piece justice in my own way and I'm so happy that my team of four could help elevate my performance!
Because in the end, this is a team effort.
Thank you once more for sharing your feelings. 🙂

@@SarwarsStarwars Indeed! Congratulations to all of you, guys for this sublime piece. Shakespeare's work is both brilliant and genuinely complex, that's why I love his work so much. I truly feel that you, guys, have elevated this speech.

Thank you! "Shrouded Destiny: A Star Wars Long Tale" is still in post-production, so I figured that having more videos showing that I'm not just merely a "fan", but actually have some skill, might help me convince the powers that be that I can deliver on my lofty promises. 😀
