I really liked the petulance of Tennant’s Hamlet, he seems more like a teenager/ young adult than the others, but I just loveee seeing different interpretations and people’s reactions to them
funny- that's what I don't like about Tennant's performance. Scott's is the best for me. He can't believe what is happening, just seems astounded in every scene.

Simm is controlled and delivers each line as if the words he speaks are part of his everyday natural conversation. You forget it's Shakespeare. Cumberbatch's interpretation demonstrates a very deeply inflicted, conflicted and afflicted Hamlet. Tennant's Hamlet is full of angst and confusion and relatable, even. Scott's Hamlet is a socially awkward, ironic and demure interpretation; almost as if he's naive and hounded by the world around him.

I think Scott is more natural and spontaneous!
Gotta say David Tennant was by far the best Hamlet I've ever seen, that whole production was perfection. This scene is a great example of why. David is the only one not talking to the audience, he's just thinking out loud. He's also breaking down the scrip to bite-sized bits and giving just enough pause between them for us to process the unfamiliar language. The combination of the two gave his performance a believability most others lack. Benedict Cumberbatch is a performance I've not seen yet, and after this preview, I'm convinced I haven't missed anything. Hamlet isn't going mad in this scene, he's plotting, planning, and justifying; he's a good man plotting evil.

Based on this sample, Tennant was remarkably good, but the best I've ever seen in the full play was Kevin Kline. You should seek out his version some time.
It seemed we saw far less of Tennant than the others, even though he was far and away the best Hamlet I’ve seen.
Each had their gifts. But Tennant was the least afraid of inserting silence between the words, and used that to give more realism to the thoughts of the character. He didn't rush the dialogue, so it seemed more natural as his character is supposed to be in conflict within himself and debating with his own feelings.
I actually really like Scott's performance. It's different from what I usually see (akin to Tennant/Cumberbatch) and idk it made it kind of interesting. Like everyone deals w grief and anger differently and expresses it differently, and it's nice to see that kind of variance in these performances. Scott's might not be as traditionally Shakespearean of a performance but it sounds like my own internal monologue.
With Scott you feel like he's actually writing the play himself. Every word is a surprise. And he's the only one that I really, truly believe is on the verge of losing his mind.
I felt the same - Scott’s rendition felt more contemporary, making it feel more familiar, more intimate, more personal. I really enjoyed his take on the character of Hamlet.
Actually feels like he’s talking to himself. It doesn’t sound like it’s 400 years old either.
One of the things that I really liked was the transition from Scott's "And all for nothing." to Tennant's "For Hecuba." I like Scott's more conversational tone at the start, but I wish he'd taken it somewhere. It needed a bit of manic energy as he's slowly building his plan, getting excited for the idea.
I had the good fortune to see Tennant in the RSC production in Stratford upon Avon. I'd seen Hamlet performed about half a dozen times before then, but I felt like I was seeing it for the first time. I made connections in the story and dialog that I had completely missed before. Yes, Tennant was amazing, but so was the entire cast (except that Patrick Stewart never looked up, so all I could see from the balcony was the top of his shiny, bald head).
I was so into it, in fact, that when Tennant said the line "I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space", I found myself thinking, "Huh, that actually sounds like something the Doctor would say." THEN I remembered who was playing Hamlet and had to stifle a giggle.
Thanks for this theatrical "sampler plate", it was intreging to see the differences in these 4 actors' take on Hamlet. Each one showed the inner agony of the character: Simm through cool resolve; Cumberbatch with volcanic greif; Tennant with a seething quest for revenge; and finally Scott's take - sad and broken, socially awkward, just trying to find peace. I'd willing watch all four performances in their entirety.
I love seeing everyone liking different versions!! it's exactly what i love about shakespeare. it can be an entirely different play depending on how you stage and act it. the transitions between cumberbatch & scott's performances particularly were jarring and wonderfully, wildly different. amazing.
My favourite ‘ Hamlet’ was played by Alan Rickman. He was astounding. Of the four here - I Iike John Simm’s delivery the most. He draws us in quietly, as if it’s a conversation with the audience. When he, as Hamlet becomes louder and more irrational, it would be more startling and a better contrast than keeping it a bit frantic, throughout. We don’t see it in this video but John Simm can play ‘ scary’, very energised and manic, very well indeed. 🙂 Great video !
Agreed. I think his is the right blend of 'natural' and theatrical. Scott and Tennant are both very good, both embody the mood of the scene from different angles. Benedict is too busy ACTING as hard as he can, and his delivery actually feels like it distracts from the dialogue.

I'd seen clips from Scott's Hamlet before and found it really good. Seeing this I also really love Tennant's rendition. Those two are my favourites.

First time I've seen one of these sort of mashups, very cool. Reminds me of the stage run of Frankenstein from some years back where Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternated the two leads with every performance. I got to see both versions at my local movie theater via a Fathom Events thing, and quite frankly Johnny was the superior actor in both roles. He found the darkness and humanity within both the doctor and the creature.
Benedict shouted and bellowed and, as the creature, twitched and flung himself around the stage like the character's existence was one unending seizure. Benedict is a perfectly fine actor when he wants to be, and his physicality can be very impressive, but so much of the time he acts so hard it becomes the theatrical version of someone cooking dinner and doubling all of the spices because they think more flavor is better. He wants so badly to be heard he doesn't stop to think about whether it's easy to listen to him.
I prefer the version with Miller as creature:) benedict was cool for me, but Miller's moster you just wanted to hug him and say that all will be better
I believe "scenery chewing" is the apt term. Imagine music played at ff all. the. time. And yet, some bits break through.

Anyone watching these four recordings should note that the technical circumstances are different. As I see it, one of the shots is quite old and was shot with a fixed camera, the actor can't play with the change of position. In addition, three were shot for TV screens while (I think) Cumberbatch was acting on stage, and were recorded. You always have to act more artificially on stage than on camera. Much wider movements are required as the small details are not visible to distant viewers.
I think in Scott’s performance we become completely entwined in the descent into Hamlets madness

This a really cool way of showing the same piece of Shakespeare done by a number of different actors. It's different from how the Shakespeare's 400th showed it, with the different actors all together to argue over where to place the emphasis in a single line, though I loved seeing Dame Judi Dench and Prince Charles get in on the argument, but I'd say by using clips from full performances instead of just showing a bunch of different line reads it makes the versatility of the Shakespeare much clearer. I feel no reason to doubt that each of those performances is the favorite performance of someone. I like all of the actors. I'm not sure if I can rank them neatly from 1 to 4 (actors or performances), but I can say just from those clips that the performance I like best in the clips is David Tennant's and it surprises me. If someone had asked me to guess which of those four actors I'd most like to see play Hamlet I'd have guessed Benedict Cumberbatch, but his performance from those clips at least might be my least favorite of the bunch. It seems the most ridiculously over the top.
Yes :) the big plus of his performance is that it was a movie and they had more time to make a great scene and I really see that death of his father pains him a lot
@@VerseNaberrie given how someone else in this discussion has brought up the idea whether or not the filmed productions in the clips were being performed "live" while being recorded, since they obviously were all being recorded or there wouldn't be clips, I think it's important to remember that even if David's performance might be in a film version--it's a film version of a stage production. It's not like David didn't do his performance in front of a live audience, just because they didn't have a live audience there during the film shoot. Ranking the actors in terms of how much I like them generally versus how much I like their Hamlets in these clips today, I'd say ordinarily I like them Cumberbatch>Tennant>Scott>Simm, but the Hamlets I prefer Tennant>Scott>Simm>Cumberbatch.

I _loved_ that sketch! Besides obviously being funny, it got me thinking about how an interpretation of a line or scene can change just from changing which word or words are emphasized.
I know that this is tottaly subjective and to each their own but to me Andrew's Hamlet is the Hamlet. There's something special in his performance, it's not "intellectual", technical or calculated, it's raw and it's coming from his gut and he brings so much of his own vulnerability and his own truthfulness into the role. His ability to be delicate and intense at the same time never ceases to amaze me. I think with this performance he has secured himself a place among the top Hamlets of all times and of course among the best actors of our generation.

Not a bad one in the bunch. I love that we have two character actors, plus there nemeses. But Tennant's my favorite. It doesn't hurt that he add Patrick Stewart in his version, too. Two of my favorite actors in one film!

Tennant was by far the best. Simms 2nd - with good intensity and emoting with just his eyes. Scott 3rd (he comes across as confused), Sadly Cumberbatch is last. He was overacting, shouting rather than emoting and generally chewing the scenery. And I love his acting normally.
Respect and love to all actors and different versions of expressing this beautiful genius play. From all actors I admired Ben's play so much. It was amazingly captivating and honoring to see. The expression of emotions just outstanding.

I find this really difficult. To pluck out random lines and set them aside one another, and then have people commenting on the overall performances, seems very odd. Are you able to share each of the four performances, in full? I had the privilege of seeing Andrew Scott's Hamlet at the Almeida, not all that long after Paapa Essiedu's acclaimed performance at the RSC. Scott's Hamlet was the first Hamlet I'd ever seen that I understood. I suddenly understood Hamlet, and Ophelia, in a way I had never before.
I am afraid that I am not planning to cut scenes from each performance, but I noticed that people are uploading full shows on YT. Yes, I must agree that in Scott's Hamlet, for the first time I noticed that Hamlet really loved her, in other I was never sure, as he was so consumed by revenge

I've always had a personnal preference for Andrew Scott's portrayal.
Four great performances of course.
They got these guys because they are so good at doing long and complicated scripts. Like Sherlock and Doctor Who
Tennant for me. So much more natural and therefore spontaneous and believable. Has a young, sinuous energy to it.
Such fascinating differences. Thought they all did a beautiful job…but David is another level. I get lost in the story he is telling and forget it’s even Shakespeare.

Awww I memorized and recited this in HS English class.
Loved Tennant best. Then Simm. Scott and Cumberbatch I'd have liked except it is my fourth video and now the different scenes have started sounding similar - still Scott better than Cumberbatch, maybe best but his hands get distracting. Tennant and Simm mostly because of sounding natural. What I like best about Tennant's performance is that most scenes look and feel unique - it is a different conversation. The body language, speed, mood, it is like doing any other scene in a play or show. The delivery is effortless, like normal words and he gets on with the acting and is also more natural with moving around, fast, slow, using up space to express. The others deliver lines more conspicuously and don't do much else while talking. I don't know if that is required for Shakespeare as some form of acting, but Tennant feels instantly relatable "normal"

What’s strange is that hearing 4 different actors & voices portray Hamlet - it seems more true to an understanding of the character.
I've watched only one, now I need to watch all four.
I definitely recommend it :) but the play with Simm was not recorded ;( from what i know there is only one scene on youtube somewhere with him :(

@@VerseNaberrie will not lie David's one looks really fluid because of the way it's shot allows him to move so much and actually lays on the floor at one point. Some of the performances are more static, so the farthest they can reenact the scene is just by gestures.
like, laying on the floor while having a mental breakdown and having what equates to an running monologue commentary the whole time? Felt that.

Scott is the best for me and then David.
Interesting that Tennant and Simms seem to play him more depressed while Cumberbatch and Scott play him a little more manic. That's just how I'm reading it though.

I didn't do the classics at school; the first two pages of A Tale of Two Cities were more than enough to bore me rigid and I refused to go any further for an English Literature O Level - and thank goodness I had a sensible English teacher who didn't force the issue (thanks Flash!) - so I'm not familiar with Shakespeare either and don't know the storylines of any of them - I have no regrets about that, although the knowledge would be handy for quizzes sometimes. However, there are two actors who could make me watch Shakespeare and David Tennant is one of them - hence I'm watching this. I saw him in one around Christmas a few years back, although I have to say good as he was it didn't change my opinion of the classics and I wouldn't want to watch it again. The other actor is Keanu Reeves, whom I saw in A Comedy of Errors some years ago with Kenneth Brannagh, Emma Thompson and Denzil Washington. It was made good by the actors, but again not something I would want to watch a second time. Heathen that I am, give me Point Break any day. 😁

As an actor trained in classical Shakespeare- Tennant is best, by all means. Cumberbatch is surprisingly lacking and unbelievable, although I have been a fan for some time. Regretfully, I am not familiar enough with the other two actors to fully comment on them here, although I am sure I have encountered them both in other roles. Tennant reigns supreme in these outtakes, imho.

Scott does it differently and better. He deserves more recognition as an actor.
Scott doesn't perform it like Shakespeare. He performs it as though the words were written by a modern writer. It's an interesting choice because Shakespeare wrote his dialogue to be performed with a certain rhythm (iambic pentameter) and Scott's performance strips away that rhythm. Most Shakespeare "traditionalists" would say he's not truly performing Shakespeare because of that.
Of course the tradeoff is that he does make the material more accessible to modern audiences which is a good thing.

Tennant (although I never liked the AU of this version, Tennant still was great)
Simm (I have only seen these clips of him playing Hamlet, but he also played that really good)
Scott (was that just a weird interpretation, or is he really that bad in those kind of plays? Reminds me of a terrible Hollywood version of Macbeth I once saw... It's a play! You need to exaggerate the emotions to properly represent those plays!)

actually, I must say that each gives sth from himself and it is difficult to say who is the best for me (Tennant seems to have the closest bond with his father, Scott "talks" with his audience like a storyteller and is the calmest hamlet, Cumberbatch is the most pissed one and energetic) I would say that Simm is at the bottom, but only as I was not able to see him play the whole performance ;( , but has a very nice voice and it was him whom I would like to listen to :)

If you’re thinking about how much emotion you’re pushing out, it will inevitably look fake. It’s not about concentration on emotion. Andrew has always had a gift for silence. The choice must be justified in the stakes. One does not yell for the sake of yelling.
I wasn’t in the least surprised.
...but Cumberbatch never yelled for the sake of yelling. This particular speech was in fact, his most emphatic - the high point of self loathing and rage for Cumberbatch’s Hamlet. The other thing that must be considered here is that Cumberbatch and Scott’s performances here are ‘live’. I’m not convinced that the others are? This drastically changes issues around the levels of intimacy and projection.

subjective but I'd like to see the death of the acting triangle; a director once used this phrase and he kinda has a point; now I see it all the time in theatre acting 101... interesting to disengage with that inner imaginary acting triangle.. I see it in all the performances interestingly ..the performances are all out to the front and to either side at 45 degrees... as a director I'd like to play with alternative focus'

I don't like Scotts and I know im a bit a loner in that option. he lacks the sense of theatre. maybe I just like theatrics, but Tennant it so brilliant here.
(I thought Scott was awful, as well.)
Benedict is just overacting, chewing the scenery. He's practically foaming at the mouth, which doesn't enhance his performance. It's hard to judge Sim's performance with the blurry video quality and sepia coloring; I can't see him properly. Tennant is quite good. He adds melodramatic touches (running at the camera, for example) but they work here. My favorite is Scott, who is one of the very, very few Hamlets (indeed, few Shakespearean actors) who can produce their lines in a conversational, relatable, natural-sounding manner.

I love Beneficence Cabbagepatch, but he's far too likeable for Hamlet.

Cumberbatch and Simm are the strongest for me. They connect emotionally to the text a lot more. Then Tennant. Simm wholly misses the mark for me.

Tennant is good. I think Simm and Scott tie as my favorites. I feel like Cumberpatch is overacting.
For me Tennant is overreacting, but in good way ;)
I believe that Tennant is a good actor but the direction just ruins it for me. I'd love to see him in another Hamlet. I love his acting choices. Him lying on the floor and venting was a beautiful take on Hamlet. But every time he looked straight into the camera, it dehumanised the character. That's why Benedict Cumberbatch's Hamlet is so powerful. He looks directly at us so rarely that when he does, you feel the impact.
Perhaps looking into the lens is Hamlet (DT) way of saying I know I have no privacy in thought or deed. My uncle or Polonius are always spying on me
On stage, Cumberbatch and Tennant both were looking at the audience when addressing them. The camera angles were different. I actually liked Cumberbatch's portrayal (aside from the enormous amount of sweat!) but I hated the play on stage. I thought the production team did him very few favors. I loved David Tennant's. I thought the addressing the audience by looking direct to camera was very effective, especially in To Be or Not To Be.
