  • Add a power level indicator to any battery pack. This works on Lithium, Lipo, Nicad, Nimh and Lead Acid systems.
    USE VIRTUALLY ANY BATTERY IN ANY BRAND TOOL: • Use any brand battery ...
    Battery Meter with auto shut off : ebay.us/TFZOmi
    Long Reach Security Torx bits: amzn.to/2WAQwg5
    e6000 Industrial waterproof Glue Adhesive: amzn.to/2XpXybY
    Sharpie Oil based Paint Markers: amzn.to/2IrAnWf
    Meter dimensions: 3mm thick, 150mm tall, 400mm long
    Lithium 18650 cell packs have a peak voltage of 4.2volts per cell and 3.0volts per cell when completely dead. The nominal voltage is approx 3.6-3.7volts.
    3s-10.8/12volt battery packs
    4s-14.4/16volt battery packs
    5s-18/20volt battery packs
    6s-21.6/24volt battery packs
    NICAD PACKS, yes these will work
    The meters are just sensing a voltage so it's just a matter of picking the right one.
    -14.4v Nicad pack is 12 cells, each at 1.4v full and 1v dead so it ranges from approx 17volts to 12volts. The nominal(average) voltage is 1.2v per cell so that is where they get 14.4v from. A 16volt (4 cell) lithium pack will be 16.8v full and 12v empty(4.2v per cell full-3.0v per cell empty), so if you used a "4s" lithium meter in place it will give you reasonably accurate readings for 14.4v Nicad battery packs.
    -18v Nicad pack is 15 cells, each at 1.4v full and 1v dead so it ranges from approx 21volts to 15volts. A 20volt (5 cell) lithium pack will be 21v full and 15v empty, so if you used a "5s" lithium meter in place it will give you reasonably accurate readings for 18v Nicad battery packs

    Thanks for this video. I’m building a mount for batteries on my 3D printer, with a voltage regulator in it so it can output 12v, 24v and 5v, and wanted to add a battery meter to it so I can use a cordless drill battery mounted in the printed mount and use it as a multi purpose device, and also use it as an emergency power bank in my garage just by shoving the battery in the mount, which then feeds a barrel socket and USB ports. Gonna order these so I can use these in my print design.

      @BurkesRepair Před 5 lety

      That impact is only like 200 ft pounds. I have a hard time even taking half ton pickup lug nuts loose with it honestly. Its ok for small things. I would spring for the Dewalt, or the Milwaukee Fuel if you can afford it

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Před 5 lety +2

      The first time I used it, coming from pneumatic, I didn't like it. Pneumatic is like hitting something with a sledge hammer once, where electric is hitting it with a ball peen 10 times to do the same job. I bought this with intentions of only taking it mobile(wrecking yard, roadside calls, etc). Anything in the shop I have air power with up to a 3/4" Ingersol Rand rated at over 1000ftlbs. It works great with the 4.0ah pack, and I've yet to find a lug nut, crankshaft bolt, CV axle nut, Pitman arm nut it won't take off. However it falls on it's face with a 2.0ah or smaller pack as they can't supply the juice this needs. It's only rated at 330ftlbs but I think it puts out as much break loose power as my 1/2" air impact rated at 500ftlbs and way more power than my Snap-on 3/8 rated at around 300ftlbs. There is a lot of number faking going on in the industry and beats per minute, motor rpm can play on those. After 2 years of using it, I'll say that I like it and I have nearly retired my pneumatic impacts for basic jobs. I don't think there is a bolt it won't take off on a standard car unless it's rust welded. Porter cable is just a parts bin brand so they just take Dewalt old stuff, rebrand it and the marketing team give it lower numbers so it doesn't directly compete. This Porter Cable impact is the old Dewalt DW889 with a gray/red plastic shell vs yellow. I don't put a ton of respect into cordless tools as I think they still fail to out perform their corded/air powered versions from even 20 years ago. I would love to invest in a top of the line Dewalt XR impact but I rarely am fully mobile without access to air. My only real gripe with it is it's long/bulky and doesn't fit into tight areas.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Před 5 lety +1

      I have checked them against the tools that have the built in meter and they're the same. The factory ones are just a voltage meter as well. Lithium is good in that it doesn't get a false surface charge from sitting like lead acid or something like nicad. It has a very stable capacity to voltage ratio.

    What your opinion of aftermarket tool batteries? I see them on eBay

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Před 5 lety

      They never have good high discharge cells. They are generally repurposed used laptop batteries, at least that's what I've seen from online tear downs. They do work for low amperage draw tools like a drill but will overheat and stall out on any other tool when put under load. You can't have high amp drain and high capacity; it's a trade off. You will generally find aftermarket packs with higher than oem capacities this is because high capacity cells have low discharge rates of only around 5-10amps. You need around 30amp cells for power tools and if you look up the prices those by themselves you'll see there is no way they can put them in for that cheap.

      Here are some 5s battery meters ebay.us/KbBYPX .I had a little trouble finding the 5s(5 cells) in the first place and then I had a few burn out on me. I figured the high voltages may have contributed to this, so when ordered more a few months back and ended up using 3s and only connecting them to 3 of the cells(you could also use 4s and just connect them to 4 of the 5 cells). They were far easier to find and a ton of places sold them for around $1 vs $2 for the 5s. They still give you an very reasonable reading for the capacity of the pack as all the cells will drain at the same rate. These are the 3s ones I ordered a few months back www.aliexpress.com/item/4000266390135.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2fb34c4dbkTesr

    Would these work on NiCad batteries as well?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes. They are just sensing a voltage so it's just a matter of picking the right one.

      Yes, a 5s would give the most accurate reading for a 19.2v pack, it will read a little high. That's 16 cells connected end to end. 18v/15 cells would be more accurate so you could hook the meter at the 15th cell vs the 16th so your reading 18v capacity on your 19.2v. I hope that makes sense.
