WONDERFUL acting. Michael Redgrave deserved some sort of award for that performance.

The genius here is that the muffled cries of Hugo (the villain if you will) is the creepiest, and moving, moment of the scene. This is still the greatest horror film ever made.

The sign of a good horror film is that it stays with you long after you've seen it. I remember this from the age of about 9. Brilliant scene.

I've seen this movie a couple of times but this is the first time I realized that his lips are moving ever so slightly when the puppet speaks. Just enough so it could be him making the voice, or he could just be sort of twitching a bit...briliant!

This story was way ahead of the curve! Maxwell brilliantly played by Michael Redgrave was the tormented straight man who breathed life into Hugo which made him so real &. Creepy! So real that Hugo had a life of it's own. As a young child I would watch the whole movie waiting to be scared by Hugo at the end. This premise has been copied threw out the decades but never duplicated. Hugo was the Great Great Grandfather of "Chucky", Lol &. Every demented doll that came after him. The ending of the film itself with a cameo by Hugo is chilling &. A Horror Classic. This is the stuff that creates film lovers.

this is another great horror film that has been forgotten about. There's no trailers or reviews for this film on youtube. Why? I thought the story with the mirror was a little to long and was baffled why the director had that comical story about the golfers in this. At any rate this is one of the greatest horror films ever made.

I maintain the scariest element of this entire movie isn’t Hugo being alive and evil, but Maxwell being tragically emotionally bound to him. Maxwell clearly loves this twisted creature beyond all reason, so Hugo assumes he can get away with inflicting any torture he wants.
At 2:43, for the first time Hugo feels the power balance shift as he sees the rage in Maxwell’s face, and tries to backpedal but it’s too late. Still, even as Maxwell suffocates Hugo, he holds him close and caresses him. And when Maxwell finally snaps it’s not after almost killing a human being who showed him compassion, but only after he destroyed the thing that deliberately ruined his life.
In the hospital he appears to be in a state of shock from grief, and probably guilt. I believe Hugo did not truly possess Maxwell, but Maxwell spoke in Hugo’s voice and became a “dummy” in an attempt to bring him back, even though it meant losing himself entirely.
What a powerful combination of conflicting emotions. This segment broke my heart.

I once had a nightmare about a ventriloquist dummy with a similar feel to this film
It was black and white and the dummy was sat on a table talking to a man doing electrical repair on a wall. He thought it was a prank and went along with it
Then the dummy raises itself up onto its legs like it was levitating, and its voice became very deep and aggressive
"I'M ME!! I AM ME!!" It screamed
It then produced a gun and shot the man dead
Its words have haunted me ever since

Yes, it's mostly dark humor. I guess it's creepy enough to count as a light horror movie. The end is actually scary if you think about it. The thought of being trapped in an endless dream cycle, reliving it over and over again, that terrifies me. It's certainly a good horror movie for people who want to dip their toes into the genre.
