To explain geneseed. Geneseed is a series of artificial organs produced by this thing called a progenoid gland, every space marine has two, one in the back of the neck, one in the chest. These organs are extracted by an apothecary and are used to create the organs that are surgically implanted into the aspirants to turn them into astartes. This includes two progenoid glands, which allows the cycle to start again. Hope this helped!

To expand on this to make a space marine you only need one gene seed which is put in the chest and the second one forms later in the marines life and this second one can be removed safely allowing groups of marines to lay low and increase their stocks of it if need be

If you are to do Dreadnaughts you have to mention Bjorn the Fel-Handed.
He is an *ancient* Space Marine who everyone venerate. However he is also kind of the old grandpa who fought in WW2 and is just tired of everyone kissing his feets.
There is a scene where Bjorn is talking to an Inquisitor. The moment the Inquisitor learn if his identity, Inquisitor falls to his knee.
Bjorn goes
"Oh for fu... Stop that!"
It wasn't so much the Inquisitor learning Bjorn's name so much as learning he had met (and fought alongside) the Emperor when Big E was still up and about.
They also have to mention Ancient Rylanor

Thunder warriors was emperors attempt to make a fast and cheap version of the banana boys. They were like a bakery using a microwave to make a cake. Space marines are control ingredients baked in a large oven, some fail and some may be subpar but it’s a success. Banana boys are like this flour doesn’t go with this egg, let me get a chicken and feed it a specific diet for the egg I need.

Beria’s real life execution was also a lot more brutal, he was first thrown in an unfair trial as he did with many other people before quickly being found guilty and sentenced to death, he was stripped down to his underwear and cried and begged for his life the whole time until his executioner literally stuff a sock in his mouth to shut him up before gunning the evil bastard down.

Fun fact, Custodies is actually Latin for Guardian. For once GW didn’t make something up and call it a day.
A lot of GW's names are inspired by something or are just straight up latin ^^
@@krankarvolund7771 Yeah just look at Warhammer Fantasy, especially with Bretonnia they didnt even try, the lady of the lake and the Green Knight are directly from King Arthur.
It’s also the Latin basis for the word “custody” which can be simplified to “keep” like a “groundskeeper” as someone who maintains a location.
Custodes is a great name for the Emperor’s guard, and fits particularly well as they “take care of” his ideals in addition to taking care of his palace.
Half of Warhammer40K is Latin, the other half is German. Which, as a German who had 7 years of Latin in school, always feels hilarious to me seeing space marines in power armour designed to look like knight armour from the medieval _Heiliges Rämisches Reich Deutscher Nation_ (Holy Roman Empire of German Nation) and saying "Imperium" instead of "Empire".

I’m not the best source for 40K lore, but from what I understand about the Custodes, they all are philosophers or critical thinkers that just casually ponder the art of war, the art of science, the art of art itself, and really just about anything you can seriously ponder. I also believe that some of them practice poetry or literature.
So I like to believe that Ava’s proposed story about an “I’ll miss you, stay safe” from an Aquilan Shield Custodes could 100% happen.
Vouch for this actually, they are meant to be individuals even in their personalities and outlooks
I mean if you’re watching over a rotting corpse all day I imagine you would give yourself hobbies to do other then the random blood games.
There is a reason that the ones who guard the Emperor are called the Companions. They are actually meant to be companions to the Emperor. They are meant to be his mental equals who he can have conversations and discussions with that aren’t the equivalent of him explaining obvious things to a toddler.
Gene seed is Space Marine stem cells. That’s all there is to it.

My favorite army is the Custodes, and I'm mildly annoyed that they got nerfed but everyone else including my friend who plays Genestealer cults are relieved and he yelled at me jokingly because Custodes pre-10th edition were all Terminator strong and near invincible aside from heavy anti armor weapons lol

Also I think we're on the same wave length with the Dragon riding custodes with My Green and purple Custodes called the "Nocturne Dragons", they are stationed on Nocturne after they became isolated from the rest of the Aquiline shield. And I kinda made them inspired by the same concept as the Exodite Eldar lol Swapping jet bikes for alien flying reptiles

Fun Fact: there is in fact a Dreadnought who's primary duty in the modern imperium is to tell stories to his chapter. Bjorn the Fell-Handed of the Space Wolves.
He kinda hates it because he'll have dreams of being with his brothers from Heresy times at a grand feast (pretty much Valhalla) and then everyone gets up and goes to another room to continue the party, but he cannot follow. The reason is he's not quite dead yet, and the Space Wolves just woke him up for story-time again. He's also less a brother and more a grumpy old grandpa of the Space Wolves.
From the relatively limited exposure I’ve had to Space Wolf specific lore, that sounds very much like them.

The dreadnought telling war stories is literally Bjorn from the space wolves. They just pull him out of stasis to tell the pups some stories since he's old enough that he actually fought with the Emperor.

that is... pattently untrue. there is a direct example of this: a child asked a space marine what they thought they wanted to be when they grew up before they became a marine, to which they said something like, i always wanted to be a blacksmith. when that same child asked a custodes this question it played out like this:
Child: "What was your dream job growing up?"
Custodes: "that is irrelevant. I have no time for such innane prattle"
Child: "I was just curious?"
Custodes: *"We are done talking now."*

Yeah that makes sense, Marines were made to be the defenders of the Imperium but Custodes were made to be the defenders of the Emperor specifically. If youre not big E youre just a footnote.
Idk like I think them being nice is more like they are not dicks also u know they care for the arts and articulating their thoughts unlike the brutes (strategic brilliance is different and of course generally speaking) that are the space Marines
@@khaledibrahim614 calling space marines brutes in general is quite slanderous. the only ones seen as brutes outside of chaos are the flesh tearers, minotaurs and knights of blood, and maybe a few more im missing. there is the opposite side of the spectrums, I wouldn't call salamanders, blood ravens (baring some individuals), Ultramarines and lamenters brutes.

Radamaar is an Iron Hands dreadnought who, after being heavily damaged during deployment against some Xenos was found by a Wolf Priest. Judging that the damaged dreadnought was beyond saving, the Space Wolf went ahead to reclaim the pilots Gene-Seed from the sarcophagus and proceeded to pry the thing open (with a plasma gun shot, no less), defying the dreadnaught.
Turns out, Radamaar is entirely machine, not a bone or flec of tissue to be found, only wires and cogs.
Of course, the Space Wolf wanted that to dispose of this abomination, and was promptly eaten alive by the lunging dreadnought.
So with Custodes lore they do not have geneseed like a space marine, as of 9th ed Codex. They are taken at latest late infancy to begin the process of becoming a Custodian. It is referenced as Alchemical processes that are so advanced they seem like magic, were the Infant is remade at the genetic level to become a 9ft tall Demigod. As a custodian is a human body but min maxed to perfection, while a marine is an amalgamation of powerful organs jammed into a modified human like vessel.
29:33 to explain it isn't whether they win or lose but that it's marked as a victory before they arrive because they're that confident in a custodes, if they do lose it'd probably be changed but something would have to be bad for one to actually lose
Also custodians are made through direct genetic alterations, they aren't given extra organs and such like a normal space marine, there DNA is changed directly to make them as perfect as possible

Hey, slight amendment to the point on the Thunder Warriors: After the last battle of the Thunder Warriors, the Custodes backstabbed and annihilated them at Mount Ararat (on the orders of big E, because their geneseed was so unstable - he argued it was a mercy as they were suffering but it was a classic big e dick move). A small number, including their Primarch (not the same of the space marine primarchs, this is purely used as a title for a leader. Thanks GW) survived and with a high lord who wanted to investigate the slaughter and hold the Custodes accountable for breaking the law and killing the Thunder Warriors. This rag tag bunch of ragamuffins attacked the proto-imperial palace. This was where the first space marines were made and the first battle of the Space Marines, ever. They along with a handful of custards attacked and destroyed the force including all thunder warriors, but the high lord was allowed to step down and leave as she was just doing her job. Would recommend Valdor: Birth of the Imperium if you're interested in the end of the Thunder Warriors and how they were murdered :)
I enjoy this show immensely, but my favorite parts have to be Kari, recording her own little episodes in the background, while Ava talks about stuff😂

27:19 I always thought the max number of 10,000 Custodes is an homage to the Persian Immortals, who also kept exactly 10,000 soldiers and were directly under the king as elite troops. They were named “Immortals” because their numbers never grew, never shrank, and were the elite shock troops, so the sight of them on the battlefield was meant as a major morale boost for Persian troops and a big morale blow for their enemies. Just like the Custodes hmm…
These two should guest star on an episode of Adeptus Ridiculous, Bricky would do all the explaining for the more deep lore, and it would be funny all the while.
there are two organs that produce extremely slowly the gene seed. You need to extract them. From your fallen battle-brothers. I feel you guys are making this thing way too complicated.
AFAIK they're located one at the base of the neck, and one in the chest. The neck one matures in 5 years, probably by the time the initiate becomes a full battle brother, and the other one matures in 10 years, but only extracted on death.
The custodian with the most names is constantin valdor. He was the captain general during the great crusade and horus heresy and after malcador the closest thing to a friend or even a son to the emperor. He has over a thousand names. All writen inside his armour.
For astonishing victories. During the great crusade a force of a couple hundred teleported into a big war with the orks that halted three legions of astartes. In minutes they killed thousands of the green skins and losing three of their own.
And for their fighting style its pretty good described in the first heretic. „We Astartes fight like a wolf pack. We work together to overcome the enemy. We are a brotherhood. They fight like lions. Every one fights his own battle. They’re not a unit. They are individual heros“

First episode of this series I've watched. Was not expecting the Discworld reference. Subbed immediately. Discworld is the best.
I do believe there WAS some stuff saying they couldn't be women, but while I don't agree with the change, I'm not angry about it. As long as it's written well I don't have a problem with it. To me the main point of the Custodes was that they were the physical peak of humanity and strength. Since men have more muscle mass (in general terms) than women, it makes sense for them all to be men. BUT it's not like the female Custodes look like the Sisters of Silence, they still would look like the brick outhouses that the male Custodes look like.
To hopefully clarify (might be wrong)
A gene seed is a product made from the Emperor and his Primarchs. This seed is not sperm, but a genetic overlapping code produced by a new organ. This gene seed turns a person into the level of a space marine, taking on features of the person the seed is from so Gilly boy, his men will become more diplomatic, their facial features ill slightly look like him, and their hair will be tinted to blond like their primarch. It is very rare for a dark haired Ultra Marines to exist.
Every space marine has 2 gene seeds in their body. 1 is extracted as soon as their training is complete, the second gene seed is extracted upon death. The Lementars chapter almost wiped out, but like 3 survived. So to regain their numbers they had train 3 people, then 3 more, and then 3 more, and this number will tick up as there are people who die during the process. This took like centuries I think.
58:31 that works both ways. We can ignore when GW goes "always has been" and we can come up with a better explanation for it. Or throw it out the window.
I personally think that the only thing that prevented Custodes from being made from female humans was the Emperor, the Emperor was very biased.
Space Marines are a different thing, but in the case of Custodes they could be made from a female base. Not sure why but they could. It wouldn't be the first time the Mechanicus tried to change stuff up.

I liked this video, I have read every source of them so nothing new but it was fun watch while painting.
Though I have to do a slight correction that the Haetaron/Companions are not the standard custodes. They are 300 custodes that are physically at the side of the emperor. the Shadowkeepers are essentially the SCP foundation. they capture and store all of the dangerous objects, entities and THINGS that we (the common plebs of the imperium) must never ever know about.

I don't remember any names but I'm pretty sure there's an story about a Custodes during the Siege of Terra where the Emperor had like some cursed demon sword that he couldn't destroy so he just hugged this custodes guy, impaled him with the sword and told him to get into the portal he oppened to some distant planet and run.
And the dude just ran with a demon sword trying to take over his mind/body stuck in his chest for quite a while.

If I remember correctly, in one of the Watchers of the Throne books, Valerian (a Custodian himself) states that not a single Custodes has ever fallen to Chaos and the Chaos Gods have even stopped trying to corrupt them, as they have learned it is a futile task.
I never knew about the retconned armor shedding, and now I understand so much more about the emperor's text to speech stodes. amazing

The question at the end of whether Rincewind is the best wizard reminds me of a quote from one of the later books that's like "Rincewind viewed his role in wizardry to be simular to that of the 0 in mathmatics. Not a big number, but all of the other numbers would look pretty old without him..." (note that I'm paraphrasing, I don't know the exact wording).
As for the actually best Discworld wizard, that varies a bit. During Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic it's probably arch chancellor Weatherwax for as long as he stays alive (in the book, unlike the movie, he's not actually murdered by Trymon but rather falls victim to the Luggage after accidentially hitting it with his magical arrow, causing it to teleport to his location) and then Trymon.
Then there's a few books where it gets a little messy, though it's usually somewhat safe to assume that it's the arch chancellor. Except for Sourcery, where it's 100% Coin, who is a sourcerer and therefore on a completely different level than any other living wizard.
Later than that, it's probably just Ridcully. There's not really any indication whether he's much stronger than any other wizard in the setting (though there is little doubt that among all living wizards, he's the most inclined to shoot things with a crossbow), but there is little doubt that he is the best. There's technically an argument to be made that in a way, Hex could be viewed as being better at magic and Ponder is 100% more knowledgeable about it, but Hex is technically more of a machine than a character and Ponder, whilst certainly being a smart lad, lacks a few key qualifications for being a "good wizard" by discworld standards.
Honestly, the easiest way to understand what a geneseed is; is to just think of it as a blueprint/template of a primarch, of a chapter.
Their applied to a Space Marine candidate, if they survive; they become a Space Marine, of that chapter. If they don't, they die.

The only big thing I remember hearing elsewhere that was missed was the recent events at the eye of terror and the return of a Primarch led to groups of Custodes starting to actively go out and participate in the Impeium endeavours mostly based on the instructions of the returned Primarch who has spoken to emps.
This was my first watch of this content, and I was doing FFXIV marketboard stuff while doing it and I was pleasently suprised to hear that the good Lady in the video also plays. ^^
to expand on the blood games and alpharius' involvement in them, it was malcador the sigilite that tasked alpharius with attempting to kill the emperor. the plan was for alpharius to come up with and was something along the lines of:
hitch a ride on a cargo transport into the palace, sneak out and kill a custodian, wear his armour and hide the corpse, follow his exact path to his post at the turrets, hack them, leave, move to a tower really far away, set up a sniper rifle and wait. upon arrival of an aircraft, alpharius saw the emperor and held fire since he technically won. then malcador snapped his head around and stared alpharius right in the eye in an instant after following the emperor off the aircraft.
then the custodian captain gets involved, they get into a lil scuffle but noting happens and they leave it at a: "you couldn't complete this exercise without killing one of my men?" the captain was understandably, quite upset. i think corvus corax may have also done something similar since he is the other stealthy primarch and from there the blood games became a common tournament style practice event.
the gene seed is stored in the Progenoid Glands, which is depending on source stored in the chest of Space marines. They contain the DNA for all the Space Marine DNA organs, and also repair those organs if damaged in combat. Some Space Marines have combi geneseed where the organ DNA from more than one Chapter is stored. ie Space Sharks are believe to be such a chapter. This lore is also the stuff that changes with every author.

If you love mech's with swords and capes so much, you'll love Lancer as a setting & game. The Mourning Cloak in particular
so with the gene-seed, it is basically stem cells based on the genetic materials of one of the -twenty- eighteen Primarchs used to grow all of the implants a space marine gets when they are being turned into space marines. one of the implants is the Progenoid glands, which is are implanted in the neck and chest cavity. when a space marine is made, the geneseed used to make them is used up. its gone for the purposes of logistics. but the Progenoid glands, using the marine's natural biological functions, absorb the genetic material from the other implants and stores it, producing more gene-seed, which is extracted when a marine dies. however, each gland only makes enough gene-seed to make one of each implant (remember they each get two of these glands). basically, you use one batch of gene seed to create a marine, and when he dies you get two back. but if you DON'T get the gene-seed back, you have essentially lost 3 batches of gene-seed (One batch for the ones used for the marine, and two more batches for the ones they produced but failed to retrieve)
They can also remove the progenoid gland before death. I’ve never heard if it regrows? I do know that each chapter has to give a certain amount back to the gene bank on terra. Several chapters have been censured for falling behind.
You should look up space marine organs or even do an episode in them, cause there pretty interesting. I can’t remember if you covered them in your space marine video or not but I don’t think you did.
