    Honestly if Julie Benko wasn’t in Harmony I think she’d make a great Sally Bowels, or at least the alternate. She probably wouldn’t be casted as the principle role due to not being a household name, but I can still imagine she would be amazing at the role

    As a HUGE Jessie Buckley stan, I am disappointed she won't be doing it - but since her film 'dance card' is chock full (she already had to drop out of Hot Milk in order to do Hamnet), I can see why she'd opt for the potentially bigger/award-winning film roles. What struck me when you mentioned Michaela is that she's actually a dead ringer for Marisa Berenson, who of course played Natalia Landauer in the film (who isn't even a character in the musical)!

    I also wanted to point out that there was a wildly successful run of Cabaret this summer at Barrington Stage Company, one of the elite regional theaters in the US. Krysta Rodriguez played Sally Bowles to great acclaim. She has been on B'Way before, a few times. She would be 100% qualified and I think B'Way producers watch those top tier regional theaters for potential casting choices. @@ChienaAvtzon I attended the 2022 Olivier Award ceremony live at the Royal Albert Hall. When her name was announced as the winner, the entire auditorium erupted in great applause, with many giving her a standing ovation. Her acting, singing, and performance undoubtedly earned her this award, especially since she also won the Best Actress prize at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for her role in Cabaret (though Cabaret didn't win Best Musical in that award). While I do agree that commitment is very important, I am not sure whether consistent attendance is considered in the award criteria.
      During her run, I bought five tickets, and she was absent for one show, which was quite disappointing given the ticket price and the very short notice provided by the production company. After she left, I attended her gig and overheard her conversation with others who had bought Matinee tickets on the last day of her run but couldn't see her. She expressed sincere apologies, explaining that she was not feeling well. I don't blame her or other actors/actresses for such situations, but as I mentioned earlier, I appreciate those who are committed to performing in 8 shows a week for months or even years.

      @@ChienaAvtzon I was so excited about it too! It's really sad, and I blame the casting directors because they had to know that they can't just cast some-Jewish person as Fanny and not expect an uproar. • @ChienaAvtzon

      @@that1theatreguy - I do not feel bad for the actress. Carol Burnett was originally offered the role of Fanny Brice, and turned it down, because she believed it should launch a Jewish actress’ career. Which is how and why Barbara Streisand ended up being cast. The revival essentially launched Julie Benko’s career, when she turned out to be incredibly popular, and kept the show afloat long enough for Lea Michelle to be cast. Lea Michelle, while not Jewish, at least had a Jewish father. So, she has some cultural and ethnic connection. It is not dissimilar to when Josh Groban, who’s father is Jewish, portrayed Tevye in high school. But to cast a completely non-Jewish actress as a Jewish woman from Brooklyn is actually quite offensive. As it plays into every antisemitic stereotype.

    • @that1theatreguy
      @that1theatreguy Před 11 měsíci

      @@ChienaAvtzon I see your point and also Queen Carol. I can't even imagine how Funny Girl would've turned out had any of the other actresses said yes or not dropped out of it (Mary Martin, I think). But still, the casting directors shouldn't have cast her (Because we need to consider her feelings as actors are people just like we are) in the first place because it's disrespectful to Jewish people. I don't know if they'll just ignore the backlash or recast her. But like it also raises the question of what would the real Fanny Brice think about any of this because so many people (even her daughter who didn't like Barbra) have spoken on who should and shouldn't play her.

    I saw the Studio 54 revival but, unfortunately, not until the stunt casting phase with Molly Ringwald as Sally. It was apparent that her acting style was meant for the camera and not the theater. Sally, of course, is a big personality but Molly's performance was small and contained. John Stamos was the MC and was surprisingly good (perhaps because my expectations were low). “Cabaret” is very much associated with Joel Gray and Alan Cumming as the Emcee, on Broadway. However, Eddie Redmayne is a huge name and is quite quirky. I am not surprised he cast himself as the Emcee, and was a creative force. Josh Groban did the same thing with “Sweeney Todd”. Micaela Diamond would be a wonderful Sally Bowles. “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” was one of the biggest flops in Broadway history, and much of it was due to it being immersive. It literally tanked the moment Josh Groban left. While, many producers refused to invest in it, because they predicted it would fail to capture an audience…. even with Josh Groban having above-title-billing. So, it is pretty safe to say, that immersive musicals are not to a NYC audience’s tastes. While, it is great that younger audiences are loving “Cabaret” in the West End, immersive musicals are not well-received by Broadway audiences. It is viewed as a pointless and annoying gimmick. However, if the staging is changed and contained on the proscenium, then it could be incredibly successful.
      Though, Eddie Redmayne better realize he is going to be compared to Joel Grey and Alan Cummings. Both of whom set the standard for the Emcee on Broadway. Especially, since this revival could easily come across as a vanity project. As Eddie Redmayne is playing towards type, akin to Hugh Jackman in “The Music Man”.
