it's so sad that in the past when I was in grade school, autism wasn't well known.. And we probably knew kids with autism and had meltdowns, but adults saw them as just being a brat and severely punishing them, which makes everything worse..

Well this is why Autism gets such a terrible reputation. Autistic people behave badly and they get away with it, which they shouldn't. A normal person would be punished if their behaviour was appalling. Autistic people should never be treated differently like that. If their behaviour is unacceptable, correct them and make them realise that.

Many severe meltdowns are rooted in undiagnosed, undetected medical etiologies, such as toothache, earache, headache, stomach pain, gas, constipation, sub-clinical seizures or/and a cold, sinus infection or other illness they can't communicate is causing them to have sudden, acute, off baseline behaviors. Imagine being in pain or feeling ill and all people think is, "it's just their autism," when really it's a medical issue causing the behaviors. Case in point, our son woke up at around 3am smashing his fists into his head and screaming when he had a great day and was sleeping well. We noticed he was gassy, and hitting his stomach and head. We gave Gas-X FAST MELT when we could about 14 minutes after trying to re-direct him from punching himself (since it's not easy to get any treatment PRN down, right when a person is screaming and hitting themselves). These situations are very challenging and it's an invisible world of autism that few people understand.

For me, while I have them, I've somehow never had them in public. Not in front of friends or strangers, only family. I've had one while I was on a call with friends once but they wouldn't have seen it obviously and I walked away from my microphone.
This has always made me feel like I'm just making it up, sort of like impostor syndrome, but I still get them since I've moved out and live on my own. I scream and kick and hit mostly myself and then I am so exhausted I lie on my bed for up to an hour. Objectively, I can't say it makes any sense I'd be doing it voluntarily, but I still always think to myself 'why did I do that? Stop doing that' but it just always happens.
However, I believe I have sort of shutdowns when in public, where I stand completely still not saying anything for a long period of time after being overwhelmed, so maybe it is a rechanneling of sorts?

I'm usually not physically disruptive at all (sometimes I am, but usually only whem I'm alone), but I become extremely verbally aggressive and may start crying and rasing my voice. Meltdowns are not tantrums. We literally cannot control them, it's our natural response to feeling overwhelmed. "Coping mechanisms" often just mean teaching people on the spectrum to internalize it and can make us feel extremely alienated and can take a huge toll on our self esteem.
It's important for both the autistic person and their family/friends/teachers to know and understand their triggers so meltdowns can be prevented. I do agree that as autistic people get older, they should start having a better understanding of themself and should take steps in helping prevent meltdowns, but stopping them entirely is impossible.

I dont know if I have meltdowns or panic attacks. After my dad died unexpectedly... years ago... they became public. It used to be compartmentalized and private distress. Now it is cyclic.
I'm fragile afterwards. Sometimes for days. I get soamatic nauseated before and after... sometimes for days.
My fear is now that it is going to happen again... in public.
I have been able to stiffle how "bad they get" since it doesn't seem to stop happening.
Inadquate coping and overflow. Im sick of it.
I fear my career is ending because of my inability to cope like an "adult" should.
Hoped it was situational r/t grief... but years later still persists.
It has impacted my life greatly. I'm mad but try to be kind to myself. It is okay to say "I can't"... well... I'm still working on it. Even when you arrive at being okay... you spend life trying to explain it to others.
I keep breaking... I put myself back together. I tell myself and other my limits... they say "nah your fine". I want to appease and or believe I am better now... and I break under the pressure.
Cyclic. 🥺 Frustrated with my limitations... but ignoring them only hurts me more.
      To what end?

You shouldn't be married if your solution to noticing he's going to have a meltdown is to just ignore him and walk away. That is quite literally the worst thing you could possibly do.
You seem to have a good understanding of what triggers them, so I would instead recommend helping him avoid those triggers (Some common triggers tend to be a sudden change in plans, loud noises and too many demands placed on them). If you notice he seems like he's going to have one, don't get upset with him. Remember: he can't control it. Talk in a calm manner and ask if he wants to leave whatever the situation may be. Help him find a quiet place away from people where he can release stress on his own.
As an adult who's had meltdowns myself, not feeling understood and cared for in these moments often make it worse. Please do better.

I commend you for recognizing when heis triggered and for giving him the space to let the moment pass by giving him space. The other comentor doesnt understand that every autistc person is different and everyone has to find what works for their own situation. You have recognzed what works for you and him and that is good! Yes we also need to show them compassion and patience as well but accept that at the moment of their rage, talking to them might make things worse. Talking to them afterwards is good as long as they are receptive to it and we dont come from a judgemental place. 🙏

NO, NO, NO! Kids that have these "meltdowns" should NOT be mainsteamed into regular schools! The time the teacher takes to deal witih the meltdown is taking away time from YOUR child's educiation! So the teacher gives ALL of her tme and attention to the meltdown and 25 to 30 OTHER kids are NOT getting their education because of ONE kid? Unfair and Wrong to the other students that can actually LEARN!

@@bunchberry9957 "Let's discipline these extremely different and seriously disabled people the same way as everyone else! I'm sure that'll work perfectly! Oh wow, what a brilliant idea that has totally never been tried before and absolutely hasn't ended in total failure!"
Seriously. Why do you think these strategies have been developed? Because the normal strategies didn't work. If the normal strategies worked, there wouldn't need to be different ones. Don't know why you think you're the first special precious little ubermensch to think of that, because you aren't. You aren't special for thinking of that, thousands of people have had that idea before, and just like them you will find out that you can't twist these people's nervous systems to do what you want just because you thought you had a good idea that wasn't actually good at all.
Treasuretrails, btw, you're either stupid or a troll, because you know as well as I do that slapping them is only going to make the meltdown worse - seriously, adding more input into an already overwhelmed physical nervous system? - and good luck when the guy with no inhibition or control over his actions starts fighting back! Would be hilarious to see the state of you after that fight.
