Honestly i think everyone was over valuing Markstorm. 34 years old with 2 years left. Flames got a young Defensive Defensemen and a 1st round pick! How many goalies at 34 are gonna get you a 1st round pick?
He’s horribly inconsistent as well
Honestly. This is solid for both teams. I didn’t predict Calgary to get more than a 1st for markstrom. If it was 2 years ago maybe. But last two seasons was a combined 900 save percentage albeit a pretty heavy workload. Is this guy a good fit for New Jersey probably. There goaltending blew last year. Calgary getting even a bottom 4 def that is defensive and young on top of a 1st is pretty solid.
I'm a Devils fan. His age is an issue. He's def a short term solution. I love Bahl. But he's limited in value. He's good. But a piece that can be replaced. The 1st round pick stings, but was offset by the retained salary of Markstrom. It's a win for both team. Calgary can build for the future. The Devils can contend ASAP which is the goal.
@@NightmareMan31 also he only has 2 years left. Enough time to find a replacement. Not too much time to have his age be a serious concern.

Great Video, as usual, Nathan. Like we didn't see this coming. LOL. It's very underwhelming, but, I guess his asking out of Calgary, they didn't have much of leverage.
I like this for Calgary. They have gained SIZE...Miromanov, and Bahl. Plus a guy like Adam Klapka probably playing next year. Markstrom wanted out, and had a no trade clause which limited what Conroy could do. Now Wolf gets a real shot, and hopefully Vladar comes back healthy. I think hes better than last season showed.

Been a flames fan since I was born and I like this trade even though could of been bigger and better for my flames. A 1st in either 25' or 26' and a 23 big Dman with potential is a good deal for Marky. Good luck in jersey Jacob

Markstrom is 34 this is a fair trade. The return was never going to be a large as most people predicted.
Yeah as a Flames fan I think this is as good as you could reasonably expect. Most Flames fans think this is a bad trade but given how neutral fanbases consider it pretty even I think that's a pretty good indication.

Very stoked to have Markstrom play for the Devils. Even if we didn't get him, I was still happy we had Jake Allen, so this makes me extra pumped! I also really didn't like Bahl that much either.
Thats a good trade, calgary gets a young big physical d man and a 1st rounder. Devils get a serious goalie for 2 yrs. Fair trade imo

how do you think this effects the return for a potential ullmark trade?
As an oiler fan this is a W for Calgary imo. Goalies always seem to get traded for less than expected. They can run a classroom and wolf tandem and pick in the lottery next year. If I was New Jersey I take the pick on a forward. The team is still so young and they already have two really good young defensemen. Don’t rush the process too much.
We don't need a winner. Jersey got their goalie and the flames got a first rounder and a big D man they like.

There's a possibility they go after zadarov and or tanev who'll be UFAs in a couple days and they're now rumblings that pesce the mix
Spot on video. I do feel both teams win here. I really wanted Ullmark instead of Markstrom. But Markstrom is a huge upgrade from what we had. I loved Bahl and hate seeing him go. But he was limited in true value. Meaning he could be more easily replaced than you could a goaltender. The 1st round pick stung a little, until seeing the salary Calgary retained. Markstrom gives the Devils a few seasons to really contend. Hes a short term solution. But they need to contend ASAP. Calgary gets a decent player in Bahl and a draft pick to build towards their future. I dont see a real loser here.
I’ll be honest. It’s a good deal for both teams. Comparing to the Dubois trade this one is great.

Really like the deal for the Devils. Not overspending for a very serviceable goaltender. Bahl was the odd man out if the Devils can acquire a stay at home top-4 defenseman.
Hey it was time, I feel Conroy did fine with what he got for Jacob I let the first shot in 50% of the time Markstrom.
I think the defenseman that devils should add is Matt grzelyck. He will fit on the lest side and is a good veteran for nemec and Luke Hughes
New jersey won the deal short term but cgy for the rebuild long term
Mission accomplished for both teams really. Not the best goalie available, underwhelming return for Calgary but he’s off the roster and won’t be a distraction and Calgary can focus on tanking

Yeah, Fitzgerald did well here without having to give up any real key pieces or that 10th overall pick for Markstrom with salary retained. I do think NJ definitely needs to pick up one or two Ds in free agency, then they’ll be all set for this year.

Comparable to trade for markstrom was Smith to Calgary. Both old often injured inconsistent goalie. Both can go for Elite steaks. Smith just got a third and ahl player. So Calgary did fantastic

Calgary got more for Markstrom than Chicago got for Patrick Kane. I think they did well in this trade all things considered.
Kane had 2 months left and they let him go to a playoff team I think we’re talking about 2 different things bud

And Kane pretty much screwed the B'Hawks over and said he'd only go to the Rangers. Chicago did him a favor when they shouldn't have and the Rangers were dumb to give up even a 2nd for him.
I’m a devils season-ticket holder and a diehard fan, but this trade is not great for us. Our defense is horrendous so no matter who we get without a addressing the defense first it’s not gonna matter the goalies are gonna have 40 shots on them per game. Mainly Markstrom is way too old.
I was with until the way too old comment. Don’t you guys have 3 young goalie prospects? NJ does need a Dman or two, but Marky will be a huge improvement.

I think non-Devils fans dont realize just how bad our goaltending was last season. If Markstrom can do exactly what he did on a bad Flames team, the Devils are going to be a top 10 team next year easily.

Insane return for a 34yo goalie who hasn't been great for a couple seasons now. First and a good young player is... a lot. Nashville could probably get 3 firsts for Saros if this is the goalie market right now.

Devils got fleeced. Markstrom is old and overrated. Has been meh three of the last four seasons, going to a worse defensive team. Calgary probably going to end up with a 2026 lottery pick out of this if NJ thinks Markstrom will solve their piss poor defense.
Umm the pick is top 10 protected and you forgot to mention the 32 percent retained and the signing bonus owed on July 1st to Markstrom....best get back to franchise mode casual
piss poor defense is a choice to describe Hamilton, Hughes, Nemec (and even Siegenthaler, and Marino when they're slotted in correctly). Devils have $16m cap space to still make a move. Will probably get a solid defender as well. Goaltending was the main issue with injuries the second issue last season. Markstrom solves the biggest issue

Hamilton has had two healthy seasons in the past five years. Hughes and Nemec are both 21/20 and not good at defending. Your only hope is that Jack Hughes stops being made of glass to survive a season with both shoulders intact.
