The Sopranos | The Deleted Scene Which Explained EVERYTHING About Vito

In The Sopranos, the glorified crew tries to hunt down Vito Spatafore after he comes out of the closet. Phil Loetardo in particular is furious with Vito, whereas Tony Soprano is not as invested in getting Vito.
Vito returning to New Jersey is considered one of the dumbest desisions made by a character, but there is a deleted scene in The Sopranos that shows this wasn't actually a desision made by Vito that is as dumb as it first appears. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

As a fan of comedy you’ve gotta admire Vito’s commitment to a bit. He dressed up like a leather daddy and danced with a guy on a leash, moves up to New Hampshire and shacks up in flambé domesticity all because he was there, it was a joke.
I think they made the right choice by leaving it out. They May have been debating one which scene to keep. This or the mall scene. Vito’s black Eye was bc of a fight with Johnny in New Hampshire correct?

As much as Vito enjoyed Jim's Johnny Cakes, he missed the cured meats back in New Jersey.
Eva have our sausages?
“Cured meats”? Is that a synonym for security guards?
Vito’s black eye lets us know the scene took place shortly after his fight with Jim. So it’s pretty early into his stay in NH. I think Tony wasn’t being very honest with him. They just wanted to get him back to Jersey. At no point was Phil ever calmed down about the situation, another sign Tony was lying to lure him back. Vito knows this. He only goes back because he’s running out of money.
Lured back not only by money but the lifestyle as well. Vito was bored stiff in NH.

Dude, that one episode where Vito is trying to not look at his watch and trying to manifest time passing quicker while at his handy man job, then when he finally looks at his watch when he was hoping it was lunch time and it was only like 9:30am. I had a job like that once and related to this so much. I basically had a job as a laborer in a commercial office building in the summer when I was in college. Like just random shit they needed done. Change door knobs, light bulbs, paint, replace toilet paper, mop, organize store rooms, like anything and everything, but most of it was just monotonous work and the day would drag so hard.
If you think the jobs you did were monotonous try working in a factory. You were lucky.
Should have bought a Game Boy when he was bored instead he had a pool cue up his ass
Yeah, that was one of the most realistic and relatable scenes in the whole series

Vito came back to get an excuse from his doctor
To me, the biggest miss was never showing Johnny learning the truth about Vito. It would have completed the whole arc and could have been done in 10 seconds. It would have brought home how big a risk Vito took, coming out to Johnny, and how heartbreaking his decision to return to Jersey was.
They meet strangers at rest stops!!!!
Great point!
That would've been too humanizing. That Vito was killed for being gay does not make him a good person. He abandoned Johnny for the same reason he killed that civilian when he was on the lam.... bc he's a pos with an inflated sense of self-importance. He killed My Fawtha. He humiliated Chris when the latter was very vulnerable, claiming Aide threw it at him, which, granted, was said to cover his tracks, but that kinda makes it worse. He dehumanized the woman Chris loved in front of their peers to cover up his own secrets, then talks down to the obviously hurt Chris, althewhile knowing that no one would respect the Captain of the Good Ship Lollipop if they knew the truth. He threatened Finn for months. He laughed when a JOKE about being gay sent a bottle through Little Paulie's eye.
Yes, part of the genius of this show is that it made you sympathize with bad ppl, like Eugene, the very same man who hit LP, but Eugene was equally selfish, and only cared to escape the life when if benefited him more to leave it, just like Vito. And speaking of, why didn't Vito go to the FBI for protection? Because in his egotistical mind, he was dead set on returning to the life where he got to bully, harass, rob, cheat and kill without consequence.
Johnny never finding out, and more specifically, never finding out FROM VITO, is exactly how it would go, which is why that's how it DID go.
Nar the vito living with the fireman was unneeded as it was idgaf bout the fanook lol it didn't fit with the rest ov the show just having him out of the show also the gay bar dressing up thing was wierd I no its entertainment but he was literally dressed like the biggest stereotype gay man ever
How would someone in New Hampshire hear about a death in new jersey
CineRanter just won't let this go ! IT WAS A JOKE !!!! 🤣
They wanted to make Tony seem sympahetic so they chopped it. Otherwise, he was going to wack Vito.
he came back to get revenge on Gino for setting him up.
I still can’t believe they used Vitos actor in the cake shop scene. That was so confusing .

I think we all knew Vito was smart enough to sniff out a trap but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work.
Either way, he got himself into that mess by thinking he could parade around town doing what he did while being a member of a group he knew would never approve.
Overall, his urges replaced his common sense and it cost him his life… which is a very human trait we all contend with on some level in our own little way.
Honestly, whether by greed (due to the money Vito brought in) or just not being as homophobic as the rest of the guys-I think Tony really would have been ok with him coming back if there was way he could do it without pissing off the rest of the crew. One theme was consistent- Tony was adamant it was going to be his decision how it was handled, whenever he finally decided to handle it.
"but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work" - Um, he pretty much did convince Tony. He was Tony's best earner and Vito actually had a viable alternative plan. The only reason it didn't work was extreme pressure from the rest of the crew. It had nothing to do with Vito's intelligence. I think you need to go back and watch the show more closely.
@@orange555 I think you fail to realize that even though Tony may have liked the idea that Vito floated to him, his fragile ego would’ve won that battle and out of fear of being seen as soft or vulnerable, Tony would’ve clipped him regardless. But his method would’ve been far more merciful than ramming a pool cue up Vito’s ass as Phil had done.
Those old school unwritten mafia rules Tony definitely would’ve prevailed in that situation.
Vito was a deadman no matter what.
@@LostInBoston617 The only reason Tony would've clipped Vito was because of outside pressure from his crew and outside families. He would've been perfectly happy to keep Vito away from everything and everybody with his cash flow. Tony was never guided by mafioso principles - not really (even if he wanted or pretended to be) - Tony was always first and foremost guided by money. It's as simple as that.
I wonder if he sniffed the chalk from that cue?
The best thing for business would have been to publicly excommunicate Vito, while allowing him to establish operations in Atlantic City. That would have established a new line of cash flow, and new contacts from a different location. Potentially even opening up the family to business with crews in Philadelphia. Vito was always recognized as a good earner.
The 2000s weren’t an ancient time. I don’t think they’d kill him over being gay when they could have set him up in ac. But Phil was Phil.
@@BookshelfQBattler Phil was looking for any reason at all to fuck with Tony and his crew. After Animal Blundetto murdered his kid brother without any provocation whatsoever, Phil had an axe to grind. And he wasn’t gonna compromise like he did in the can all those coupla three times.

Your script for this on the first 2 minutes was amazing 😂
Vito should have moved to Norway like Silvio.
"Cornholing urges." Ha. Who Knew? Vito liked "backyard" games. Another great vid CR. 👍
On the deleted scene where Vito was on the phone with Tony and Silvio, take a look at the bruising around Vito’s eyes. This happened the morning after he got in a fist-fight with Johnny Cakes when they’d started to make out. Vito could also tell that Tony was bullshitting him about being able to assuage Phil. After this scene, we get to the part in the show where Vito went back to the diner to apologize to Johnny Cakes, and admit that he’d been hiding himself for too long. So that’s when Vito tried to settle into small-town New Hampshire.
My favorite Vito scene is after he kills Jackie Jr. There’s a moment in Ralph’s club where the camera pans to him, and he’s miserable over what he’s just done. It’s one of the rare moments in the series where we see a guy show remorse & regret after a murder.
It was his cousin after all, those guys were ruthless, mobsters, if you become a problem or even if they think you might become one they send the people closest to you within the crew to take care of business, your best friend, your cousin even your own brother.
Is there a clip of this? Or what episode is it
@@bajorekjon If you look up the scene where Jackie Jr gets killed, it’s usually included. It’s a really interesting scene.
I think that it was early on in his stay. Definitely before he actually started to build a life for himself. Clearly his wife was involved in brokering the meeting, but Vito understood that it was a trap. I think it fits in well with Tony saying later that Vito should have just stayed where he was.
I imagine that low level "connected" guys wouldnt be invited to the wedding of an acting boss.
This is why it's so important not to use mysterious powders. They should have kept that scene in btw.
“He must have had some corn holing urges…” 😂😂😂😂
When Tony said that life has a way of chipping away at a positive outlook…damn, I felt that
I think it's very true! I try everyday to remain greatful and positive but Life will eat away at those things if you aren't intentional about it.
@@kingndanorth Yeah same
That scene wasn't deleted
They couldve deleted this scene intentionally, maybe even outright replaced it with the scene at the mall, to further emphasize the addicgion those in the life have, and how even when they have a clean getaway out AND returning would put them in mortal danger, they still can not resist the temptation.
That's what I think
I think they deleted it because they wanted to make Tony sympathetic. Tony wasn’t going to scour the earth looking to kill Vito just for being gay. He wouldn’t have approved it if Phil hadn’t made a big deal it. Had Vito just stayed in NH and kept quiet and not drawn attention to himself he would have been fine.
I have a weird relationship with this show because as much as I hate Tony Soprano as a person.
(and believe me I really *REALLY* hate him as a person)
Even after all these years I am still intrigued by him as a character.
I've never come across a show that I was both disgusted and enamored by at the same time.
Excellent channel, love your videos. I am a huge Soprano fan. May I ask where did you got this clip? DVD extended edition?
The deleted conversation most definitely puts a certain slant on things, but it also kind of weakens the plot line that Vito was drawn like a flame back to the Mob Life. The whole Sopranos sub-theme of what is real and what's not being blurred is a bit weakened by it, so I can see why they'd cut it. It would have potentially taken the series into more of a soap opera lane, which was not really going to work long term.
Vito was still the stealthiest character on the show. Jackie Jnr never saw him coming. And he had been hiding his gayness for decades. Very sly for a big guy.
If anything, this scene makes it much more clear that Vito knew Tony was bullshitting on the phone to get him. The look on his face just before throwing the phone to the lake makes itso obvious. What I dont get is: Vito had at least 200k hidden somewhere safe, possibly much more. And he knew the construction bussiness pretty well. He could have started his own construction company in another state far away, or in Canada or something. He did not have to work as a hard working blue collar labourer. He could even be a non-wiseguy criminal, running girls and meth. Or if he wanted to start a new life with a new identity with his family, he could have gone to FBI. I mean he had tons of options, instead of returning to Jersey, trying to get back in to the life. And Vito was not a stupid guy. He knew he would most likely get killed if he ever returned. I cant help but wonder if he was subconciously suicidal. I mean he went to a gay club in NY wearing a motorcycle outfit. And he did not even try to stop Sal when he saw him. Just think of Pussy killing the Elvis impersonator because he saw him with his FBI handler. Vito did nothing. He did not kill Sal, did not try to bribe him to keep him uiet, did not make up a story about why Sal was spreading rumours about him because he had a beef with him. Vito did nothing. And just think about what he said when he heard Eugene commited suicide.
“He must have had some corn holing urges” hahaha
Try living a lifestyle where the time restraint of a true "9-5" just isn't there. When your lifestyle is that way conforming to a "have to he there" schedule is dam near impossible for some people. I had to change careers and man the schedule was much tighter. I knew this coming in, but the reality is much more difficult than you would think. Then try to imagine the glits and glam lifestyle of a mobster to that of a carpenter. I can kinda understand Vito going back if he had that cut out scene talk with tony
I agree with you about everything except the importance of the scene, because in the scene Tony gives away that it's a trap.
"What about Paulie?" is crucial, and the answer informs Vito that it's a trap, which is why he ends the conversation and throws the phone in the lake.
I guess but you have to think it all the way through. Being a carpenter is boring and not a lot of money but you don’t have to kill anyone, no risk of jail time and less chance phil will kill you
Vito left his shinebox back in Jersey.
I think this scene represents a scenario where Tony was decisive and had decided to whack Vito, this was an attempt to lure him back to whack him
I think they cut it because Tony didn’t want to wack Vito. Phil pressured him such that if Vito returned to jersey he’d have to ok it but had Vito never come back, Tony wasn’t going to go out of his way searching for him
Vito came back because he missed Phil like a brother-in-law
Vito missed the sound of Finn pissing like a race horse
I was convinced by Vito throwing the phone, that he was not convinced to go back to New Jersey because of that conversation with Tony. Glad they deleted that.
Right then where would the story go? Vito might have stayed in nh a happy ending for him but not much drama
Wait, i could have _swore_ i remember (in the show) the part where tony mentioned specifically the words "taking an unexplained powder", and the line about having another kid to show everyone vito knows where to stick little vito (?) Or maybe those lines were in the show, but were also in the deleted scene? As in some of the lines from the deleted scene were kept for the final take/the show I guess (then again i can't remember if i had seen this deleted scene or not) because i have seen a handful of deleted's, so idk.
I could swear I heard at least some of the dialogue , too. Perhaps I watched the deleted scene years ago and just made the mistake of falsely remembering it being from the aired episode, though.
@@24Ruiner The Mandela Effect.
No, it was a real scene when Silvio meets Vito’s wife and says the unexplained powder line.
Those lines were in the show, it tripped me out too. I think they just cut out some bits
Was that deleted scene later added to the DVD version of that episode?
When was it deleted? I remember it distinctly. When Vito curses at the end of that conversation it means he sees through Tony’s lies & knows it’s risky to return to NJ.
It wasn't in the show
He came back to give his son tips on being a Puerto Rican hoo-er.
He finally became the butt of Mafia justice.
In the deleted scene, i think Tony was betting he could contain Phil's response and so he told Vito that Phil was in check.
I think that scene is an alternate to the mall scene. David Chase was notorious for changing his mind and doing reshoots, sometimes even replacing an actor and having to reshoot every scene they were in with a new actor.
I actually prefer this scene over the mall one, it does make things a little smoother
After 20 years in the can Phil made sure to do his due diligence. He made sure the pool cue was chalked for the 3 ball in Vito's side pocket!
Tony! Why did you let me watch this video?!

Tony wanted to help Vito. As the boss he had to make Vito feel secure and as far as Phil goes Tony can’t let Phil think another guy calls the shots about his people. Where Tony failed was not having a sit down with third parties of the same financial interest and Phil to let Phil know to back off his people.
Absolutely. Vito was an earner and that's what Tony cared about. He seemed fairly indifferent about Vito's ass muncher status, although it brought shit and infighting to his organization.
I don’t think Tony could have protected Vito forever. Too many in that life would have wanted him gone. Someone would have eventually made it look like an accident
The worst thing was that he betrayed the trust Pauli had. How much more betrayal could he take?
He was fucking stabbed in the heart !❤️
I absolutely love your content. You always make me laugh
Tony was really considering keeping Vito because of the money that Vito brought in from the construction rackets.
"..cornholing urges.." 😂 superb humor 😂😂
Very good, Sar. You really did the needful with this analysis, Sar.
It doesn't make any sense, that's why the scene should remain deleted. Tony didn't have any intentions of killing Vito yet, he was the one against it the longest although his crew or Phil would have jumped at the opportunity. Also, Tony begging Vito with sort of a girly voice is just off, it doesn't fit in with his character.
I always saw the fact that Vito couldn't stand the life of a working man as enough of an explanation. Romantically, he had the perfect life with Johnny Cakes, but like the latter says on the phone: It was the lifestyle that he missed. It also makes sense that Vito understands T enough to know that money is his main interest, so he tries to bribe himself back in, and also suggesting an alternate position ("a more tolerant atmosphere") in Atlantic city.
Yeah - the scene actually gives Vito another reason not to go back, since it's so obvious that Tony is trapping him.
Well, we have to remember that if it’s a deleted scene, the reason it’s not in there is because it didn’t happen in the canon of the sopranos universe. David Chase recently talked about this on the talking Sopranos podcast. Where sometimes to trick the public they would shoot a scene to Waze. At the time they had crewmembers that were leaking, scripts out to the media .
So just because it’s a deleted scene that does not mean that it was meant to be canon to the story. Because that wasn’t how it went down that was the first time Tony and Vito talked was at the mall. They also shot two different scenes for the end of Adriana. They shot one scene where she got away and she left and she lived but she had to never come back New Jersey again. But we can’t say that’s Canon.
There is another deleted scene that definitely sheds new light on the situation…. Vito called Phil to a sit-down in an attempt to iron things out…. But the meeting was a ruse… Vito had his kid brother Bryan waiting in a Trolley across the street from Olive Garden (where the meeting was taking place)… and just as Phil was crossing the street, Bryan slammed on the gas… but in an ironic twist of fate, Phil unexpectedly turns back to his car because he forgot his lucky switchblade comb… inadvertently thwarting the attempted Mob rubout…. Bryan fled the scene after side swiping two parked cars and a Hotdog cart, but not before Phil was able to pin him as the driver of the Trolley…. And the rest is history….
Doesnt matter if phil is gone you still have to contend with all the capos, and someone is going to talk and spread it around. Tony would look terrible if he let this slide, and would have to sleep like the end of blue comet for the rest of his life.
Vito could have gone into witness protection and put everyone in jail. Realistically in the internet age/gps and cell phone age nobody is safe from anyone or the government.
The gay thing was interesting plot wise but the amount of suspension of disbelief based on technology (track cell phone and other stuff) was so high. I guess i have to watch again to get a better sense of it because the realism of the closet gay thing is 100% but any chance of his return in the tri state area without death is 0%
Hell even him running is a liability because he has dirt on the mob anyway. No way to realistically get him out of the situation alive in America. Maybe another country. Somewhere with their own mob type presence like Japan. Yakuza would not know or care.
Eh that's all i got
vito never had the makings of an honest working citizen
“Unfortunately though when Vito came out the closet, Phil got into one”. 😂 👏🏻 brilliant my friend
Vito should have just gone home that night n continued life normal. It would have been Sal Iacuzzo's n his buddys word against his and most people would take Vito side cause he was made and a captain..he raises a threat if they continue to slander his name and its done...I think Vito realized it's a trap when Tony said Phil is coming around and appreciates the situation. Knowing Phil he figured that was BS..
Agree. Vito was Tony’s best earner at that time. Vito could have said he dropped something in the security guards truck and was searching for it. 😂 His move to New Hampshire was a bone head move but he was scared. His heart became a “lump” for his family and he has no work ethic due to those no work jobs. I think I would have kept in the deleted scene and taken out the mall scene. But I’m not David Chase now am I? Live Free or Die is one of my favorite episodes. I think this story line was brilliant and I’m glad Joe Ganicolli suggested it to David Chase. The real question is was the pool cue chalked or not? 😂
@@jeboccuzzi10 🤣🤣🤣 Poor Fat Dom went to his grave with the answer to that eternal question. The thing is that security guard thing prob wouldnt have even come into play if Vito didn't run away. Smart question by Vito, asking about Phil. But extraordinarily dumb to get the answer he did from Tony (cleary Bullshit, Phil would never be okay with Vito being a flambé) and still come back to Jersey.
This scene wasn't deleted. I have this season on DVD. Tony asks Vito's wife to leave the room when the call first comes through. Just as she's about to head upstairs, she glances at Tony as if she knows his intentions aren't to help Vito. There is also some great comedy the way Tony and Sil listen to her walk up the stairs and hear her shut a door, as well as the way Tony gets pissed when Vito hangs up the call.
Very interesting. You hit shows I love and are willing to dive into wells that are deep. Hitting OZ and the wire really help. They are so drastically different. But at the same time, intriguing. Can't wait till you dive into Westworld then realize season 1 is the best story.
Tony saying that Phil "appreciates the situation" was a dead giveaway that he was lying.

Paule Must have felt like he was stabbed in the heart
I’d appreciated it if it was added in. It didn’t seem like Vito was desperate to return back to Jersey, which I guess he was without the scene. Either way, he should have never looked back
One of the best scenes ever was Phil talking to his nephew, Vito Jr.
I wish you could review El Patron del Mal or maybe the first few seasons of El Señor de los Cielos.
Vito came back for a salami sandwich
I think the hesitation Tony gave Vito, when Vito asked about Phil, was Tony knowing Phil was going to kill Vito if Vito came back
ya think??
All Tony cared about was not having it look like Phil could intimidate or harm one of his captains with impunity. He couldn't care about the money or Vito. Every decision Tony makes is about his own selfish nature.
Take Phil out of the equation and Tony would have stood up to his own guys - Paulie, Carlo everyone who wanted him gone for being gay.
CZcams won’t even let our guy mention cigarettes.
Vito was a heartbreaker. He stabbed Pauline in the heart and a firefighter
I swear I’ve seen the deleted scene before! I own the collector’s edition full series book thing. I wonder if they added deleted scenes on a disc or something. Because there was disc with music from the series and etc.
The whole "Vito kills the guy getting his mail" thing is so dumb. I don't care if he was drinking, he wasn't nearly drunk enough to forget that he was on 95 heading south to New Jersey. It wasn't like he was having second thoughts, he was on a direct path back home and seemed pretty lucid the whole time...there was NO REASON for him to get off 95 and wind up on some back road in Massachusetts. It's complete nonsense.
Cruising down the Webster highway. When the leaves are changing.
For all Tony's faults, he was all about the business most of the time. He mentioned multiple times how much money Vito brought in, and though Tony's offer to bring him back may have been dreaming, it was more sincere that it appeared on the surface.
He missed his family also.

He came back for several reasons: a) he missed his children b) he was running out of money c) he didn't find a good job up in Maine d) Tony wasn't an animal to just mindlessly whack him and e) he left behind a huge earning, a lifetime's work that he felt he might just be able to get back somehow. And on top of all of this, he was just couldn't live with all of the lies anymore, it was eating him up from the inside.
Eh..if you go to the carpenter scene it was mostly because he was lazy and would rather risk death than work a 9-5
I know its not mentioned in this video or any others I don't think but were the writers bored? mean Vito was just a normal average mobster in Tony's crew then in the 9th episode of season 5 out of no where he's a gay guy there's never even a hint of it in most of the 5 seasons till the 9th episode i always felt that was odd.
1:42 hey vito, did Johnny's cakes 🍑 even _exist?_
