You approach marine biology with humour, enthusiasm and humbleness (it always amuses me to see you constantly confess your inability to be certain of pronunciation in your field - so many of my colleagues are so *certain* in their pronounciations. The fact sponges can actually rearrange their whole bodies whilst still functioning makes me wonder whether this was another wonderful bit of marine biology Hillenburg stealthily and casually introduced into SpongeBob gags or just a coincidence.
(EDIT: Just a couple seconds later the video uses SpongeBob as a visual representation of fragmentation XD)
So when he pull his arm it’s not just a cartoon gag it’s actually fact that sea sponge can do
Considering he was a marine biologist before switching over to animation as well as some other accurate facts about marine life I highly doubt it was an accident

We might be killing off corals via exponential climate change, but there is some evidence to suggest Sponges are actually pretty tolerant to low oxygen, high temperature environments. I suspect they will outlive us in the fossil record.
@@queenvagabond8787 i agree with you. while some sponge are dying off not everything will and eventually it will come back since convergent evolution is a thing. they'll just evolve to it again.
Right? If a sponge evolved the ability to take over and convert another organism into itself, then we almost have the flood from Halo. Just missing locomotion.

Creatures, like axolotl‘s, can regenerate their limbs by turning the cells near the wound into stem cells, and have those stem cells reform the Lost part of the limb
This video is reminding me of my 5th grade science class, where we spent the whole year going through all of the different kingdoms and other categories of life. I distinctly remember sponges because that was the first group of animals we discussed. I'm glad at least one of my elementary school science classes did that, it was very foundational.
And who knew that sponges were so interesting?! Quite adaptable little critters, aren't they? I have a new idea for a D&D monster now.

Another "advantage" (if that's the right word) of having cells that move around fairly freely is that it's closer to being a colony of single cell organisms. If you're hoping to innovate multicellular life, then gluing your cells together is just one more feature that has to evolve.
Great episode The only thing I knew about sponges was that if you pass them through a fine mesh You wind up with a whole bunch of little bitty sponges. So the rearranging of the internal structure was another amazing fact about these wonderful animals.

@ 3:44 It is math, it's called the Square-Cube law! The Square-Cube law is a principle that helps us understand how things change as they grow bigger or smaller. Imagine you have a toy block, and you want to make it twice as big. When you make it bigger, the surface area of the block will become four times larger because it has two sides that got bigger in length and two sides that got bigger in width. So, if the original block had an area of 1 square unit, the new bigger block would have an area of 4 square units.
But here's the interesting part: the volume of the block, which is like how much stuff is inside it, will become eight times larger when you make it twice as big. This is because you have three dimensions that got bigger: length, width, and height. So, if the original block had a volume of 1 cubic unit, the new bigger block would have a volume of 8 cubic units.
So, the Square-Cube law tells us that when something gets bigger, its surface area increases by a factor of the square of the scale (in this case, 2 squared is 4), but its volume increases by a factor of the cube of the scale (in this case, 2 cubed is 8). This means that as things grow bigger, their volume increases much faster than their surface area.
Represented mathematically it is (With L1 being the original length and L2 being the new one) :
A2=A1(L2/L1)^2 Where A1 is the original surface area and A2 is the new one
V2=V1(L2/L1)^2 Where V1 is the original volume and V2 is the new one
