    I am probably older than most of you (67) but enjoy very much Alyssa's sartorial advice and wisdom. I'm retired, so now have time to really think about how I want to dress, how to listen to myself and give greater consideration to how I move through the world. It has been a wonderful process. If I could speak to my harried 35-year-old self I would encourage her to take steps, even baby steps, to become more self aware, to love herself more unconditionally, and to simply ignore the barrage of do-this-to-be-that information that surrounds us. Don't set yourself aside.

    Such a great video Alyssa! I am a man, so I watch your channel purely for inspiration. One thing I realized is that I used to shop with the mindset of scarcity (you talked about it before), but now I only buy things that are truly unique and special to me. Not just clothes, but everything. Another lesson I learned is that online shopping for clothes does not work for me, and it is OK. I am not standard size, too tall and thin, so unless I can return an online purchase to a local store, it is really not worth time and effort.

    Hearing you talk about "perfection" made me realize it's been a loong time since I thought about clothing and "perfection" with any connection. I focus, mostly because of your channel, on how I FEEL, internally, in my clothes, and if I connect to my 3 words, then I'm super happy with what I'm wearing.
    Aand, I also do NOT think clothing is frivolous. For me, clothing is absolutely an extension of who and what I am. It's really a form of self-love for me to put on my favorite button down, jeans, blazer and brogues, and BE me the rest of the day. It's actually hard to put into words the level of comfort the way I dress brings to me, energetically, emotionally, physically. If I'm presenting authentically, there's not much better than that ❤️.

      Hi Sofia, I don't mean to upset you in any way and I am glad you are OK. I used to be very fat and a yo-yo dieter. What really helped me lose weight easily eating big portions and staying slim (3 years now) was becoming vegan and I know this sounds a bit extreme but if you take a look at the John McDougall's website there is a lot of good advice and it's free. I am a volume eater and I eat a lot! Losing weight is not just a vanity thing you do to look good in clothes, it is really important to prevent serious health problems. When I was fat I could not run for the bus or walk without my thighs chafing and this is nothing to do with fashion, I felt like a prisoner of my own body. I wish I had known years ago about Dr McDougall, it's an easy way of eating and it does work.

    What I've learned from you (from taking your Shop Your Closet course and from your videos) is to use your Elements of Style. This has shown me really how to look at inspirational photos and not think I have to mimic them with the exact same items, but instead by focusing on the elements of those pieces. I have been shopping far less because I'm actually happy with my wardrobe and my pieces are beautiful and functional!
    Thank you!

    I’ve shopped vintage since I was a teenager, but as I advanced in my career and had a family, I didn’t have the time to really enjoy that. In the past two years i have segued to buying only preloved and vintage items as my work and lifestyle changed. This has unleashed a level of creativity I didn’t know I had! I experiment more, I restyle things, and am generally having way more fun with my closet than I ever have. The life lesson? It’s a lot like Alyssa says, my style feels more like it comes from me knowing myself better rather than wanting to emulate what I see. 😊

    I miss your big mug of tea/coffee today lol! Knowing our style and our body are really important, recognise what suits us and what trend is not for us. Really looking at ourselves and appreciate the good things about our body, for example I've only just noticed (at 56 years young!) that my legs and torso are well balanced even though I am petite. Losing weight after becoming plant-based has made me like my body for the first time in years. Like you Alyssa, I love jeans and look good in them, I'll keep wearing them forever, I've just invested in a thicker denim skirt for winter, not as long as a midi because I know it would not suit me, I love wearing it with my taupe suede boots. Appreciating all the good moments is essential, I love my cat and he loves me! I love my home and garden and my city (London). I am grateful for this online community and your channel.

    I think I was more confident in my teens and early twenties. I knew my style but after a bad relationship where I was criticised and emotional abuse it changed. And then since having children it diminished further. Changing body and not fitting in with the mum bod you are then constantly not happy with what you buy, doesn’t fit right, not confident in it. It’s only recently when I found you and Signe and Christina (awesome trio) that I have started to look at my wardrobe and feel better. Confidence is coming back - even down to wearing a baseball cap in public!!! (Prob sounds silly to you but to me it was a big occasion).
    Thank you. You’re my life lesson on feeling like me again. ❤

    Up to my mid thirties, I had very little expendable income. So I got hand me downs from my mam and sister (neither my size), bought second hand and saved for items I loved (often they sold before I could buy as I was usually waiting for sales, and it wasn't the end of the world! Although I was very thoughtful in anything I purchased, so still remember a number of items 😂.) When you mention perfection it so interesting, as I think I was better then at accepting what I had, being way more creative coming up with interesting combinations and finding ways to style items that didn't necessarily fit *perfectly"! I'd say I still do this to some extent as I learnt the habit but not as much, now that I have higher spending power i can be a bit less thoughtful which isn't great. I have enough (more than) so this reminds me to get back to my creativity and my sometimes unusual fashion choices. Thank you alyssa, ❤️ your message

    Here's something I learned from my closet that I apply in life -- age is just a number. My Levi's, that were probably already 10 years old when I inherited them, have served me well for almost 15 years. When the worn knee blew out completely, rather than discarding them, I sent them to Denim Revival to have the hole repaired. I'll get another 15 years out of them. The teapot my gran gave me is nearing 50 and even though it has a chip in the spout and the painted design has faded, I am not going to discard and get a new one. My furniture took on new life with slipcovers. Shiny and new isn't always the way to go.

    I have discovered I'm not really a print person anymore. I like different textures of fabric instead. Simple clothing and colors work best for me. Black, navy, tan, white, gray, brown. If I want something that's oversized it has to be the right cut and purposely oversized in just the right places, not big all over. I have been working on discovering my style for about 2 yrs now and when I look at what is left in my cIoset I can see what I actually enjoy wearing and not just a closet full of options of all sorts. I also think when I see an outfit I like, now I try to modify it with things I own already. Another big takeaway is stop buying multiples of a style, for instance- when oversized is in and I really like the style pick one high impact piece, not multiple pieces, maybe a jacket or slouchy jean -if boxy shorter jackets are in and I like the look make one selection in a basic color and that will do. Finally stop buying fancy type clothes that I love the idea of but won't get the wear because it's not my lifestyle anymore. I want my closet to have things in it I can happily wear every day. I only need one or two dressy type items and they shouldn't be so dressy that they couldn't be dressed down to be worn more often. Those are my lessons. ♥️ Enjoyed your video.

    Thanks to your tips, this winter I have really found joy in my closet! I have made formulas that just make getting dressed and feeling good so much easier! I didn't need to purchase anything over the winter!! Speaking of tweaks, years ago when I purchased an expensive woolen suit, it looked OK and ticked off all the boxes, but there was just something off. The young saleswoman said, 'how about we shorten the sleeves of the jacket?' and she did and man, it was just what was needed. They tailored it for me and I still have that suit some 25 years later!

      Those little alterations can make such a huge difference. I have a half-circle skirt that is okay. The other day I tried it on again and pinched the waist about an inch smaller with a safety pin. WOW! Then it looked so much better, no longer dowdy. It also needs to be about 3" shorter. I can do both alterations, and once done, I'll actually wear the skirt instead of just trying it on over and over, thinking it's not quite right.

  • @MorningClarity
    @MorningClarity Před rokem +1

    I've come to view trends as a collective shift in focus, which can either lead one off a cliff with the herd, OR serve as a reflection on the options being highlighted. As in, "Now consider THIS. Does this direction suit ME?' For example, given the Hi-Waisted jeans trend I came to discover that I have a particularly long rise, I NEED 12" to fit my body! Now I understand why so many things haven't worked for me, and what the solution is. The pendulum will swing, and others may discover the key to their best fit, but I've found mine.

    I’ve learned that certain articles of clothing feel/fit so right that if I need to replace another item like it in another color I should seek it out now while it’s available. I’m thinking specifically of the way a specific pair of flannel wool trousers felt and fit, and the way a blouse fit and draped so perfectly (I am petite so this can be an issue perhaps not so much for others.)

    Lesson from my wardrobe; without regular maintenance and evolution, it and I both fall apart. I would get so frustrated shopping (6' and statuesque, on a tight budget), that I would wear things to pieces and have them disintegrate at the worst time. Choosing mindfully didn't mean they'd magically last forever. Now I watch for wear and begin searching earlier, and have found a good consignment shop that fits my budget. I also watch myself for burnout and stop pushing myself, while taking steps and making changes to improve the situation before I crash.
    Thank you for showing me that second hand could be done well. I have family that literally buy thrift by the pound, regardless of quality or style, and it really turned me off. I just filled several holes in my wardrobe today for an incredibly affordable price, with items I love, some still with tags on. And I took a grew risks, because I noticed that you did too, and it wasn't the end of the world if it doesn't work for me. I am grateful.

    Alyssa, I love your videos and the concept of shopping your closet. On CZcams I find many videos on concious or intentional shopping, but I miss some about mindful or intelligent decluttering. It feels very difficult to shop your wardrobe if you say goodbye to every item you have not worn in the last year or so. I will look for this kind of video in your channel, as I am a recent subscriber. Love your energy, your voice and your sense of humor, too. Greetings from Spain 😊

      Hi Olga … Alyssa definitely has videos about items she won’t declutter, so it’s worth going back through them. I love her energy too. Enjoy watching.

      @ShellTay32 I'm late to your comment and had a giggle. Has no-one close to you pointed out the possibility that you might be a borderline Hoarder? 😄 I've had it repeated to me on multiple occasions over the years - I feel so defensive - and they don't understand my rationales!!

      @@comealongcomealong4480 I keep my excessive stuff very well organized. So when I mention it everyone is like, "No you're fine!" But, organized hoarding is still hoarding. Did you watch Friends? If so, remember the episode where Monica had that secret super messy closet? That's me. 🤣

    I enjoyed watching this Vlog. It's so true that small changes make a big difference. I think I've realised that jackets and belts are not for me....I've tried them and I just don't feel like myself. More importantly I like to be comfortable and relaxed. I've ditched skirts altogether. Forget what expectations others have, please yourself😘

    Since I began watching your channel and a few others, I've seen dozens of "trend" posts. What's the incoming trend? What's off trend? What should you never wear again? What is classy? What is frumpy? What makes you feel like a goddess? All of them had something worth thinking about! But it made me less inclined than ever (and I never was) to chase trends. Instead I've been able to define better for myself what I like and why I like it, and at the same time, add those little tweaks to feel like me, but a bit better. Where your channel differs is in the slow fashion aspect. You reinforce (did you know you say this?) that we are all good enough as we are! That we've already made good choices, and that if we look at those pieces again, and think a little differently about them, we don't need much more. And when we are looking for "more," it can be reaffirming for ourselves and also not hurt the planet. Thank you.

    • @johncampbell5741
      @johncampbell5741 Před rokem +1

      Good points. I’ve never been inclined towards trends either. I’d adopt something if I like it enough to wear after the trend is over, but unless I like it that much, I wouldn’t buy it. Look at the cold shoulder trend; so many people bought into it and then quickly abandoned it, and the clothing was discarded or donated but it’s tough for thrift shops to sell it since most people don’t like that aesthetic outside the trend.

    I love your videos and one of the things I am doing now is to prepare my outfits in the evenings. It makes the morning routine so much less stressful. I also take a lot of inspiration from shopping my closet, it‘s actually fun. I also had a major jewelry haul (in this case, a haul was necessary), and actually started wearing jewelry again, after 20-odd years. Careful with the supplements though. There are lots of studies confirming you don‘t actually need them. Have your hair analysed to see if you have any actual nutritional deficiencies. I used to buy products with extra calcium in them, until I found out I have too much calcium in my system already.
