  • He is known for his slow-moving and beautifully-shot films like ‘Wings of Desire’, but director Wim Wenders has also spent his life taking tens of thousands of polaroid photographs.
    The quietly-spoken German became very animated indeed discussing Trump, Brexit and the Harvey Weinstein allegations.

    What's the point in interviewing someone if you already have the narrative you want before the interview has even started? Have a conversation. Listen. Be present. This is embarrassing journalism.

    So, I've always been fascinated by things like chemical photography, vinal sound recordings, etc. VHS gets a lot of hassle these days but it was a brilliant solution to the problem of storing video on magnetic tape. This guy is mistaken about digital cameras. You can keep your photos... they do, in fact, exist. Just as digital bits on a storage device. You can even print them out into hard copy if you want. Nothing's stopping you.

    • @abstractentities354
      @abstractentities354 Před 4 lety +1

      Disthron I think you may have read him a bit to literally. You can absolutely print digital images, but his point is that in being able to copy/share/post them ad infinitum, digital information buries itself so quickly that it is lost like a grain of sand on a beach. Some digital images will be printed, but of the trillions taken globally, most will end up scrap in a landfill on a discarded hard drive. The unique physical nature of the Polaroid is that it reflects a specific coordinate in space-time and is the only record of that space-time event that will ever exist for all of eternity.

    • @Disthron
      @Disthron Před 4 lety

      @@abstractentities354 I think his comments reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of how these things work. And while I can understand that he is quite old and these things can sometimes be frustrating. I'm not going to let the idea that digital photos aren't real go unchanged.

    • @lionstandingII
      @lionstandingII Před 2 lety +2

      He's underlining the Laziness, Lack of Rigor, and self-infatuated narcissism of those who would have digital "phone photography" supplant chemical photography. Over 99% of phone-captured images will never be seen outside of a 3x6 flickering screen with the color values and detail of the image completely dependent on the device used for viewing and, with the "sharing" of the images from device to device, the image will degrade far faster than its traditional material counterpart.

      not all old people are out of touch.
      the benefits of loving long are that you can compare.
      he doesn't compare the technical aspects, but the social aspects; how people interact with the art. a polaroid was a ritual.
      ignoring that, is missing the point.
      PS he doesnt say digital isn't real, he was talking about iphones.

    Wenders, who is incomparable as a filmmaker to me, here is exposing he knows little about photography. For example, he assumes that the making virtual of appearance of personal experiences began with digital photography, and that analogue film is "actually sharing." Not only is a polaroid, for example, a virtual representation of what someone would have needed to be present to actually experience (and that people complained about in much the same way as Wim) but analogue photography isn't even the first example of this virtualization of experience. Even oral storytelling, to those who were not there to experience the events themselves, is a making virtual of that which was once not. Also, Wim specifically states that photography saved him from the fact he was a shitty painter. This betrays another huge misinterpretation on WIm's part but that has plagued photography since the technology was discovered. Namely, it betrays the assumption that photography ever aspired to be photography, which is the same as saying photography aspired always to what, until photography, it could not attain to. It belies a fundamental ignorance regarding not only what art is but that each medium of communication communicates fundamentally uniquely.
