- Taxi scams happen often in Manila, Philippines. You know you're being scammed when the taxi driver does not turn the meter on, or asks for "fixed rates." I would recommend to never use taxis while in Manila. Stick with GrabCar or Uber.

Jed Teng Very true indeed. And these bad drivers always use pressure tactics on the victims. Dun for a moment believed that the passenger is at fault for taking a NORMAL taxi, or didn’t insist that the meter be turn-on. It’s the GOOD driver’s duty, to turn on the meter and delivery a passenger to their destination. Most savvy passengers would have choose to take Uber or Grab, which is the correct way to go.

Taxi drivers doing this all the time in Philippines. This is what i do:
When they don't open the taximeter or tell me it's PHP500, 700 or 1000... i say Ok Buddy, Cool! I just chill out hearing music with earphones.
Few blocks before my destination i let the driver know that my destination is that Police Station just near my place.
When i get off they just run away (80% of cases) Some of them figure it out what's going to happen and ask me please Sr. just give me 100 or 150 pesos for the ride. If i'm in good mood i give 50 pesos.
It happened to me dozens of times so i saved a lot of money thanks to bad drivers ;)

I don't regularly comment on videos that I watch but the behavior of the taxi driver just gets me. Christ, what a disgrace. I get that you have to earn for yourself/family but to keep making excuses and pointing out your side is right is bonkers. People blatantly ignore rules so they can gain personal gain will never lead to anything good in the long run.
Get his plate number, make sure that he's reported. People like him shouldn't be allowed to drive a taxi anymore.

The taxi driver is already apprehended and taxi will be impounded for 3 months. The taxi operator was fined for 120,000. The driver will lose his license to drive as well.

Michael Pineda the point of the ltfrb in closing uber and grab for awhile is because their drivers and cars are not regulated. Theyre just trying to look out for the passengers. Without regulating drivers any criminal can get a car and use uber/grab to pick off possible victims. pls be fully informed before berating the ltfrb.

And for some reason LTFRB has the audacity to say Taxi is better for passengers because it is "regulated". Good thing Haley is popular so action was done to that specific taxi. But this has been going on for the longest time every single day with so many taxis. the measures being done is just on a micro level; like revoke this driver's license. But will that solve the issue? No, it's a band-aid solution. Instead, LTFRB is focusing on how they can penalize Grab and Uber more.

The airport manager should be axed. Why can't they do something about this. This has long been a problem for years in NAIA and until now it's still there. They should do what Mactan airport operator is doing. Each passenger taking a taxi at the Mactan airport is given a piece of paper containing the vital info of the taxi. The NAIA management should do the same.

Melissa Centeno I'm a little torn, because most businesses roll the cost of breaks into their prices. It is why after hours urgent care is more expensive, because there are less customers and you are paying to have equipment and staff on standby, but the big difference seems to be that this guy is not picking up fares on purpose in order to scam foreigners, so his claim about not having customers seems false.
I'm curious do most of these taxi drivers own their own taxis or are they ripping off the government and the taxi owner by driving without the meter running?

here's what i learned when I was in Manila with friends for a weekend trip:
1. better have your own GPS even if you're in a taxi or uber or grab. some drivers tend to drive you around so you could pay more
2. grab and uber is better than taxi. hotel transports are also helpul specially if you are a big group and just divide the total amount (in our case there were 12 of us)
This happens to me also way back October 2016...I arrived liked 9pm at the terminal 3 and then walk outside to find a taxi...I dont have enough money that time,no sleep no eat for about 10hrs of travelling from kuwait to phils...im an Ofw in kuwait and I was maltrated by my employer so they just send me to the airport and they bought me a ticket without a meal and they dont give me my whole salary so the money they gave I save it for my ticket to province...and so I walk out and take a taxi..at first we agreed on a 250 peso but then when our way to my destination he ask me 500...I dont argued with him I just gave him the money because I was really tired...good to know that someone do this for them to stop this attitude...salute to you miss Haley..

Hi! Haley, I am glad that you posted this vlog about this taxi driver scammer. You are not the only one that they do it to, they do it to Filipinos who come from abroad. They think that OFW's have got a lot of money because we OFW's work abroad. They just don't know that it is hard earning money abroad and also we don't know if we get treated okay or bad working abroad like in the case of Joanna Demafelis(bless her soul). I think if we notice anything bad or wrong it should be reported or put in You Tube so that the authorities can do something about it or someone decent can do something about it. It is unbelievable how some people commented negatively. Who would have handled this correctly? It is just natural for Haley to react the way she did. Anyone would have done the same or even do worse (I know I would!) You’re so tired from travel with massive suitcases and people expect Haley to accept the unacceptable?! Wow, people may be tourists but they earned their money through hardwork too! Not all foreigners or OFWs are rich! Insane thinking. You come in the taxi, expecting you’ll be brought to your destination and then these taxis (almost all of them) will arrogantly tell you to get out and find another taxi? They do this with a consensus knowing that people would rather pay than get out in a middle of a busy traffic potentially at an unsafe place. This is killing the tourism industry and unpatriotic. In other countries, such as in Japan or Singapore, the taxi drivers think they are part of a collective and the good service they provide is a reflection of their country. So they would not dare damage that reputation. I understand that some people are driven out of desperation but their actions are not good for the business and only lessens their customers. Now, uber and grab are earning those customers they’ve lost. They are saying they are waiting so long, well because not many take their taxi anymore because of this scam! And then he insults Haley that the reason he takes the white taxi is because she wanted it cheap, what is wrong with that?! The man expects help, help is not forced. It is just right that Haley exposed this scam to help tourists watching her vlog, bring light to this abusive practice and to help Philippines boost their tourism by taking out dishonest taxi drivers who hurt the country’s tourism business.
Cong TV had a segment about this kind of scam on taxis.LOL plate number ALA 3821 AND HE SAID TULONG are you kidding tulong or donation is given freely not asked forcefully.
Well just watched TV Patrol and the guy's license was revoked and found out he did it again to another person and now even the taxi franchise is now under the hot seat.

I've been Ubering for years with nothing but great service and the best part is the driver has nothing to do with the money transaction. Never heard of fake Uber drivers. Maybe somewhere.

2AKNOT I uber almost every day here in the US to go to my college campus and I've had a couple of bad experiences. One time a lady started yelling at me for telling her directions. Her gps clearly had her going the wrong way yet she refused to listen to me and told me to shut up. I could have gotten off but i didnt want to be late to lecture so i stayed and tried to remain calm as possible. She said give her 5 stars i was like oh yeah sure lmao . I reported her. Hope she got fired lol. She didnt even wear her seatbelt b4 getting on the freeway. It was a scary experience.
That’s the worst part of Philippines for me. A lot of people will try to scam you if you look like a foreigner. First time I went there I payed 5000 for a taxi from the airport to taguig.

Yeah I totally feel you on this one Haley.... . probably one of the biggest hassle while in Manila was the taxi scams.. Constantly having to be extra attentive while in the taxi is a hassle and I found myself just walking or using lrt/mrt systems instead... :/ though the money isn't the factor, it was the idea of being scammed was the issue... the principal behind it was more important than the money..

Good for you Haley! The authorities there really need to do something about this. Everyone’s first experience in the Philippines is getting scammed by a taxi. It’s happened to me several times. Not good for tourism at all. Why don’t they just create a certified taxi system like other countries do with flat rates to certain areas or requiring the meter to run before the passenger gets in.
Also, it’s not just this driver. It’s the system that needs to change.
True, land, exit the airport, then get scammed by a taxi. When in Manila, the area near the airport is much worse for taxi scams.
I have a bad experience with taxi in MOA going to parañaque. I was with my 2y.o Son and husband. We took off from the taxi bay and he didn't run the meter trying to negotiate a P300 fare more than the usual we pay. So we had exchange of heated words. We demanded we get off to the other taxi bay but he dropped us in the far side off the MOA arena with our 2y.o Son at 11pm. He treated us SHIT what more to foreigners. We reported it but nothing happened. I remember his exact words telling us "why do you treat us taxi driver like this? Just because I am poor or uneducated? " My husband blew up! He almost punched him in the back of his head but of course he got hold of himself thinking of our Son. To Haley and the others we feel you.

Naiistress ako kay kuya. Everytime I visit manila that always happen. Ano daw? Take the taxi upstairs? Parehas lang sila sa taas man or sa baba. Nag hihintay sila ng 2 oras. Sino bang nag sabi sa kanila na mag hintay sila ng 2 oras bumyahe sila sa ibang ruta kung ayaw nila mag hintay ng 2 hours. 😒😒
Take the taxi upstairs means go to the Departure area where taxis are dropping off passengers. Gago talaga.

These taxi drivers in Manila are not good people. I only met 1 driver who didn’t scam me, and I gave him extra. I was just so happy to finally meet a honest taxi driver!

They should be reported to LTRFB.. this is Illegal. Meter was issued so they are required to USE IT.. no matter if they waited hours, it's not your problem already. Next time get the Plate # and report it to the authorities. These drivers feast on "Balikbayans and Foreigners" as they know they have money.
