I have loved to hate Bama... They achieved excellence and were almost impossible to defeat. Nick Saban has been classy and decent. I hope he enjoys his retirement. As a UM fan who just watched my team play them... Even on a down year they were well coached, disciplined, and really good.
I think you said what I've been thinking since I first heard of Saban retiring. Best coach that ever stepped on a field and I'm not even close to being a Bama fan .
The University of Alabama has grown exponentially since Nick Saban arrived - the campus, the student population, the surrounding community.
Will truly be probably the most interesting aspect of Bama post Saban. Its truly wild how much growth Bama got because Saban had them as a perennial National Championship contender. But if somehow they fall off because of the next coach, does that revert and do they shrink, do they keep growing because the foundation was built? Super interesting.
@@jmill1334 I agree!
Long live the king.
- A Big10 fan, but more importantly a fan of the sport.
The sport as we know it has just changed for sure.
As a lifelong Texas fan, I have the utmost respect for Coach Saban. He's indeed the best to ever do it. Salute 🫡
Let's just hope Sark stays 🤘
And you should. Nick gave TX Sark 2.0. LOL Enjoy him while it last.
I think you have the best right now... Love Sark hated to see him leave Bama...
That Marcell Dareus hit on Colt in 2009 still hurts
Why not Lane Kiffin?

Turning 66 in a month and could not begin to even imagine the stress of being Nick Saban, Head Coach of Alabama
I have now lived thru the era of Paul "Bear" Bryant and Nick Saban and I honestly say you are forever

Thanks for the amazing memories Coach Saban
A retirement well earned...god bless Coach and please enjoy Mrs Terry and your family...

They'll see. We aren't going anywhere. Roll tide.
As a Michigan fan, the Rosebowl game did feel like the real National Championship game when it happened. Nick Saban was the most formidable opponent.
He and his staff carried a decent team to OT vs a much more complete team. He's a football genius
I felt the same way. It felt great to win against Washington but afterwards I was a little sad because I said the same thing "last week felt like we won the natty". I mean it still was great to beat washington but beating alabama felt bigger
Michigan is trash
Thats only because Michigans Special Teams had their worst game in 4 seasons. You could argue maybe the unforced errors were due to the aura of Saban and Bama.@@rodneysparks6442
It was the national championship
This is going to shake up the SEC like crazy.
Not really it just means Georgia becomes the conference standard
@@michaelmerck7576it definitely does, a lot of the reason that people think the sec is so much better than everyone else is Saban. They really haven’t been outside of Saban and one of team during the past 10 years. Without that guranteed chip appearance by Saban every year the big 10 is gonna start to snag a lot more.
Plus the 12 team championship playoff starting next year. SEC will not be half of all the teams
@@michaelmerck7576 Georgia will become the standard for the next few years but it’s still gonna cause a big shake up. I don’t see Kirby being as consistently dominant as Saban was.
Sec? Entire college football scene
Imagine Nick Saban joining Chris Peterson and Pete Carrol in a College Football governance committee to go architect future of college football
I like it!! Great idea
The NCAA needs it
Pete Carroll has no business anywhere near those two gentleman, he still has a Show Cause Order in effect 😂
@@paulltyler Yawn. Pete was responsible for the most electric team of the 2000s and still has juice. Antiquated notions of “improper benefits” and the prior consequences of violating them is the realm of irrelevant graybeards. You want to be an irrelevant graybeard?
Hmmm...interesting
As an Englishmen who just recently moved to the states with hardly any knowledge of CFB, I decided to really push myself into it and you’re a massive reason, so thank you for that. I wasn’t there to witness Saban’s utter dominance but I can be sad that it’s ending, always in life do you wish to experience greatness and no other word better explains the Crimson Tide and Saban himself. In the moment you more than likely hated the man but give it time and you’ll wish he was around like before. As one door closes, another one opens, and as you say in your opening “we’re entering the Golden Age”, so now more than ever we can be excited to see the new rise of a dominant team/coach.
Amazing insight for someone recently exposed to college football!
Welcome to the madness that is our game. I hope you find the same inspiration we do from how these young men compete. The great coaches are looking for ways to fill these young men with mental and emotional tools for greatness. Saban did just exactly that.
Saban leaving is great for CFB. This is a great time to become a fan! Next year 12 teams make the playoffs, not 4 like now, and years past
Attention seeking
@@thequiethunter76 Yeah it definitely is madness, it’s crazy how despite being the same game as in the NFL, it’s still vastly different. My only critique so far would be the amount of commercials
Joel hit it on the head. Many cfb fans will be shocked when it becomes clear just how much Coach Saban’s persona literally created this whole “it just means more” business in the SEC.
That is all about to change rapidly.

Name another conference in the 90s that had three national titles from three teams. There isn't one. Even when the SEC didn't outright OWN college football, it was still the majority shareholder.
Dude never won a thing at MSU. Easy to win when the bagman gets all the top players. That’s all changing now with NIL.
Longhorn fan here and I have huge respect for Nick Saban. His team is so disciplined and so physical year in and year out and he changed the trajectory of college football itself. My team basically imploded upon the championship loss vs them. Makes me so appreciative that we have Sark. Once I saw him play call the natty before he moved to Texas I was super excited and knew he would be our guy. Alabama wants him back and I know it but the Sark we have today is because of Saban. Happy with the Longhorns future and wish Alabama luck on their head coach search.
Also…I’m an OSU fan and I hate this. I’m happy for the man, but as a fan, it’s such a bummer. Thank you Saban for the memories and the greatness.

Coming from a UGA fan this is kind of a sad feeling seeing this now that it’s actually real if I’m being honest. A bit surreal seeing the 🐐 retire
I can see maybe Bill Bellchick doing the same thing.
As a Georgia fan. Saban's last title loss was to Georgia. Saban never recovered. I find it poetic.
That still wasn't a catch. He was gifted everything Greg S. could gift him, and he still failed. Nick realized that College Football passed him up in 2021.
That's why he bought a house in FL this year. Why he spent millions on his car dealship this year.

With portal, teams can't hoard players anymore. Nobody will match Saban's success - EVER.
since you know the future what are the lottery numbers
It will be harder for any team to get through at 12 team playoff. But easier to get into the playoff.
Also with NIL, they can't be the only ones who illegally pay to play for championships anymore. Everything is starting to equal out.

Good for him to enjoy his family after the greatest run ever.
Been feeling somber today. With the news of Nick Saban retiring, and Pete Carroll being fired. Which is odd because I'm not affiliated with Alabama or the Seahawks. As far back as I can remember they've been coaching. Guess I'm being confronted with my own mortality...
Besides 7 "national championships," Nick Saban won 12 conference championships and posted a 16-9 record in bowl games over 28 seasons as an FBS head coach.
As an Alabama fan, i am honored to be alive at a time when he was coaching during this era. I'm so sad right now. He's earned his retirement for sure, but I wanted like 3 more championships. He left his mark. RTR! 🐘🐘🐘🐘

Well, a bit of a relief as I am not an Alabama fan, but also saddened to see him retire. The Saban Bama era is over. Best of luck to the greatest college football coach of all time.
I lived 25 miles from Oregon's campus since 1973. Like the Rodney Dangerfield fans of football, feeling like we couldn't get no respect while the SEC provided constant domination we knew Sabin well. I just wanted to say that Sabin might be the greatest coach ever in Sport. All of 'em.
John Wooten, various Yankee managers, Manchester United manager also deserve consideration.
Wow, didn't think i would say this. EXCELLENT PODCAST TONIGHT. Covered Saban retirement, paid appropriate homage, was extremely truthful of college football landscape and issues, talk kind of camouflaged about future job for Saban (commissioner of new TIER 1 league), talked about potential replacements, timeliness and fallout repercussions. More importantly, no bias. Ty Joe Klatt, if you can do more like this I will be here every podcast!!
Great commentary & description of Coach Saben. What an example he set for expectations. He was passionately driven!
Love it Joel great stuff. What a career. Congratulations to that team and family.

I am a young man, 25 years old and a young fan of the sport. Never really was into it growing up but over the passed few years I've fallen in love. Your show Joel seems like the best CFB show/podcast. I learn something new every time and I can hear your passion and love for the sport in your voice when you talk. I'm kind of bummed I wasn't a fan or aware of Saban's greatness because I was a child and not paying attention to the sport. I will have to do research and watch old games moving forward and hope I'll get to witness greatness again down the road
Congratulations to Nick Saban on creating a great legacy, on his successful coaching career at Alabama and blessings on whatever his next venture is… Thank You Coach Saban to your huge contribution to College Football
Joel you’re correct in that Coach Saban is always about the game. He knows it’s about the totality of the sport. The people that don’t like Nick. Always say he’s only for things that helped him at Bama. But that is so far from the truth.
Nick should head up the NCAA. He wood be fantastic! He should also write a book. Even if he uses a ghost writer. You nailed it tonight and thank you sir.
Bitter sweet day, it’s tough to say goodbye to the GOAT. It’s hard to admit, but 90% of my confidence just got up and walked out the door. Waking up every Saturday for 16 straight years, knowing that Bama was probably going to win, was pretty special. Hard to believe he is stepping away after what I believe was his best coaching job since being at Bama.
Hey Joel. Love your content here from the UK. Great drama in college football. You gotta love it❤. Keep up the great work.
1st pod cast started watching you when you were on with Collin. Your preparation is second to none for college football. Great Job.
When Michigan played Alabama in the 2000 Orange Bowl (and won thanks to Brady), I was amazed at the overall talent that Alabama had. Every DB ran a sub 4.4 forty (or something like that). It was one of the most talented teams I'd seen despite them being a 10-3 team. They had 6 future NFL players on the roster including Shaun Alexander. The only thing they lacked was a great coach. When they got Saban it all came together.
I only have two knocks on Saban. I'm a Michigan fan, but I was mad that he left MSU for a seemingly lateral move to LSU. The other is that he had such a talent advantage that it was really unfair. If I have a car and you have a bike, I'm going to win the race no matter how talented you are. Saban was amazing at Alabama and for a year at LSU. When he didn't have a talent advantage he wasn't nearly as good.
MSU-had a ~.500 record performance made a lateral move to LSU after a 9-2 season.
LSU- had 3-5 losses every year except for the National Championship season where he had one loss. (13-1)
Dolphins--he was awful
Alabama--7-6 his first year and then like a ~.900+ winning percentage over 16 years. Unmatched in the history of college football.
Knock 2 1/2 is how he got that talent. Even in 2000, true or not, the South was infamous for good ole boy alumni doing anything to get a player. It is why Brian Kelly (and Saban) go to an LSU instead of a ND or MSU. No infractions have been made, so you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He really has had the best record of any college coach ever. (or at least since the facemask was introduced.)
To be honest until dabo at Clemson made his big stance on NIL, I believed he was sabans replacement, probably unlikely now.
No Bama fan here, but somethings are so evident its IMPOSSIBLE to ignore. Hands down the best! And even though he didn't go out as the national champion this year, it's a year where he did arguably perform one of his best coaching jobs over a season this year.
Salute!!
I absolutely love this video as a coach you can see what he says in every aspect of life and he’s right in every sense of the word. Thank you coach for everything you’ve done even if it’s ruined LSU some seasons in the process
Congratulations to the GOAT!!! As a Michigan fan, I can say the standard he set and the standard that IS Alabama is one the rest of college football fans want for their team! What! A! Living! Legend! Klatt, I want to say you're the standard for me when it comes to where I get my college football news. Thank you for providing your insight and education to the sport! One thought I wanted to leave.....would Alabama consider PrimeTime to be their new coach? Klatt, I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Not from a winning perspective yet but from a motivating -the-players and influencing perspective, he's top of the heap.
He probably realized how the CFP, portal and nil has destroyed college football… the ENTIRE season IS the playoff and college ball has turned into the mini NFL…ITS REALLY SAD!!!
Thanks Joel didn't kno who you I untill tonight .great show keep it up .I told my friend the say coaches you said for the job.i hope Steve sakiesian my self .I think Alabama will compete quicker with him but I'm happy with 1 of the 3. I'm like you Joel it has to happen fast with a coach .I think it happens with in 72 hours are sooner.
I think this year was the best year for college football in while. There were a lot of teams that could have won it all imo.
On Coach Saban from a Dawg fan: Nothing but respect for the man. Nothing but respect for Alabama. As much as I want to beat them and harbor emotions about some of the bitter losses we had against them over the years (Blackout 2008, SEC Championship 2012, NCG 2017, SECCG 2018, 2020, SECCG2023 - Note I didn't mention 2015 or the 2021 SECCG because that was just horrible), Coach Saban and Alabama are world-class top-to-bottom and the epitome of playing the game the right way and doing so with class. All the best to Coach and the Tide.

Love your program Joel and how you bring a strong analytical approach to a one of the greatest sports. Well done on the respectful and dignified coverage of one of the greatest to grace our wonderful sport. I really liked how you are also focusing in on the future of the sport and what that structure looks like. One piece I believe is missing from this entire conversations is how do you have college athletics if there is no college? We have seen how colleges are failing students and the entire system has become completely antithetical to open discussion and sharing of free thought. Universities are becoming nothing more than indoctrination camps that no longer teach students how to think and instead of allowing them to come to ideas and thoughts by free will instead are using programs like Title IX and DEI to push indoctrination agendas and narratives. This obviously doesn’t work in college football and is not taking place, but by doing this inside the institutions that are the cornerstone of the existence for college athletics how will college athletics be able to survive if there is no college? When the natural progression of this ideology is the existential destruction of the University systems themselves? I believe that this is going to have a greater impact on college athletics that no one is discussing. I would love to see you and others like yourself who are open to good discussion and respectful discourse approach this topic.

I don't believe this will be duplicated because I think with the NIL and transfer portal, coaches simply won't stay anywhere as long anymore. The reason coaches like Saban and Harbaugh are leaving is that the recruiting and roster building element is exhausting now.
You put Harbaugh in the same sentence as Saban? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s basically an nfl team
@EarlyRiser71 yes. Harbaugh beat Saban in his last game.
There's the sentence. Welcome to 3rd grade.
@TaterSwift2008 Harbaugh cheated to earn one. Saban did it the hard way and earned 7. Harbaugh is a joke compared to Saban.
@@EarlyRiser71 Saban was paying players before NIL. That's why he's leaving. His recruiting edge is gone.
Amidst all these praises Saban is getting which he so richly deserves, you might want to go and ask Miami Dolphins fans what they think. Saban's name is golden except in Miami. I give this man a lot of credit for rebounding from two rather blah seasons in South Beach to move on to Alabama and do what he did. OBTW I am a NE Patriots fan and we know that Saban is a "slappie" and a FOB (Friend of Belichick), as Saban cut his coaching teeth with Cleveland 1991-94 when Belichick was his head coach and Saban was the DC. I am also a Michigan graduate and we had no idea at Pasadena last week we were witnessing Saban's last game. Alabama scared me in that Rose Bowl game, and the main reason was Saban. Bravo on a generational career!
Mr. Klatt always keeping it real about society. 🙏🙏
Maybe it should be a DEI hire. Maybe a Vietnamese lady can coach them. They are very much unrepresented in this profession.
Bama Nation was so blessed to have the GOAT and Legend for 17 years and went to many games and the best memory was attending the A Day Game scrimmage game with a sellout crowd and watched Saban walk onto the field at Bryant Denny for the first time. That game day program will be a very cherished item to. RTR ..
The difficulty is going to be that Nick Saban couldn’t replace Nick Saban. The changes in college football are so severe and unbridled that a different coach will be needed.
