    Next time place the sea horse or what ever onto the card, as it would be displayed, push the silicone over the top covering the object, let it set then pour plaster of Paris over the whole lot, this will give you a level base, for resin, turn over and de-mold and resin to your hearts content. The silicone will remove easily from the plaster for cleaning, the plaster will help to preserve the contours of the mold as well as a solid level base.

    What would work to flatten something like that would be a tiny marble roller like you use for baking about 3-4 inches long. Love your seahorse. If you wanted it a little deeper couldn't you go around the edge with the silicone gun and make a rim to hold the Resin in and make it a little deeper? Just wondering.
    Love your platter. I can't wait to see you pour both of those the seahorse and the platter. You go Julie, you are doing a great job. You have made so many beautiful things. Way to go making your own molds. You should be very proud of yourself.👍🙂🌞🦋🌻🍁🐠, watermelon coasters🍉?

  • @merryclicker
    @merryclicker Před 4 lety

    Nice job! I was thinking about making some molds too, and I can tell you that the mold kits that are using liquid ingredients mostly come out glossy. They take a bit longer to cure, but less than resin. The yellow stuff comes out matte, but I've used a few different brands, and there is one that is food safe that comes out glossy, and others as well. One, OOMOO 30 (and I believe OOMOO 25) come out glossy too. They are more expensive. They would cost about 5 times as much as the silicone you used, and maybe much more. The last time I bought it, it was about $40 US. I like the idea of using the silicone sealant because I only want to make small molds. As with my acrylic pouring, I like smaller pieces. I've done a few 10" round wood pieces, but I actually feel more comfortable with much smaller pieces.

  • @possumbold

    I think that my jewellery display boxes that I used to buy for display for around $8 are very similar to what you’ve made. I’ll see if I can find the link as they are made of wood and should be a similar size. Some inserts have 8 sections, some 4, some 3, and the outside box itself, although it’s worked very well the way you’ve constructed it. The inserts would be great for coasters. A rolling pin would work well to push the object down. I’ve made moulds for sculpture, but not for resin. I guess it’s the same principle. Great lateral thinking Julie!!! It makes me realise the Loli Vefe silicone mats are good value. The silicone you’ve used
    on the edge is good for peeling away your silicone after you’ve cast it. I wonder what would happen if you used air drying clay and just lined it with silicone? I’ve used both mats and the Loli Vefe mats are better quality than the coloured ones. This was a wonderful idea Julie. I need to go and check out my clay mould items I’ve already cast and think about whether I can line them with silicone, especially the 3-D ones, although you use slip (very watered down liquid porcelain clay to pour into those. Hmmm. Thanks for your lateral thinking - you really go steps further than some artists. As soon as you’ve finished perfecting your work you challenge yourself to do something new. It must be so much more interesting than spending years just on one type of pour! You’re brilliant.

    • @possumbold
      @possumbold Před 4 lety

      Purple Petunia I wonder if it gives a final gloss finish? Do you know, I wonder? I’ve made moulds before for clay and I pour or sometimes inject liquid porcelain clay that I’ve made into ‘slip’ but it doesn’t give a gloss finish. It doesn’t matter for clay as we glaze it anyway.
