  • In order to pass the driving test and become a safe driver we must understand and obey any road markings we come across - but this can be a challenge for a new driver. We might see white lines across the road, and other lines along the road. Some are dashed, some are solid, and some are even yellow or red! In this video we will explain some of the more common road markings, and show how they help us to drive safely.
    Video chapters:

    Good way to think of it;
    - Treat solid white lines like a solid brick wall, do not cross.
    - Dashed / broken white lines have gaps, so you may pass through if needed.

    Note that it there are circumstances when you can cross a solid white centre line. It is a common misconception that you should treat the solid line as a brick wall.
    Highway code rule 129
    This means you cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

    Around 4:20: The Department for Transport terminology is “Marks” and “Gaps” for lines and spaces between them. “Warning areas” should have 4 metre Marks and 2 metre Gaps (all metric - even on the road!), and they are often used on the approach to signal controlled junctions. IF it’s well maintained (and not worn out etc), it can be useful to gauge whether it’s possible to stop when the signal switches to Amber, or not. E.g. at 7:42, it was wise to continue, although it might have been possible to stop from the speed shown; much faster, you wouldn’t be able to.
    The length of such a warning area varies depending on the speed limit; somewhere within it the so-called “dilemma zone” (another DfT term) occurs, as to whether to try to stop or not, depending on the weather, what’s behind you etc.

    Watched this video to find out what the weird wavey center lines are for, and you didn't cover them even though you drove through them most of the video. Seems like they were maybe before stop lights or something, but they also seemed like they were sometimes after stop lights... I'm from North America so we have nothing like this. We have very simple road markings, and the rest is left up to signage.

    Great info, clear and precise, but watching the driver, he went over on the Amber light at 7.45 and could have stopped. Many kids think amber means prepare to stop, but it does mean stop if safe to do so. I would of only continued when it turns amber when just crossing the line.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  Před 2 lety +2

      The traffic lights turned to amber less than a second before we passed the stop line. Maybe it looks different on a video - but that is nowhere near enough time to stop the car smoothly. In that situation it is far safer to continue driving and avoid the chance of getting rear-ended.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      We should indicate if someone else would benefit. Other people (including cyclists or pedestrians) may not be aware of the road markings, so consider whether indicating would make your intentions clearer. 👍🏼

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  Před 5 lety +1

      Stopping at a Give Way line when unnecessary might actually cause danger - as you might surprise following traffic if they can see that it is safe for you to continue. On a Driving Test you might get a minor fault for unnecessary hesitation, but in real life you might get rear-ended - so if it’s safe try to keep rolling.

      We are allowed to cross broken lines and enter the right turn box as early as necessary to join the queue to turn right. If the queue ends up blocking following traffic, that is OK as it’s no different to what happens at a normal junction (without a right turn box) when turning right.

      We can’t cover every rule in the Highway Code - and since red lines are very rare we left them out of this video. Sorry!

      That’s not important - it’s just the compass heading of where we’re driving.

      We can't cover everything in the video - but you can read about them in The Highway Code :-)

    @7:40 plenty of time to stop on the amber but no attempt made tssk tskk

      The traffic lights changed to amber less than a second before we crossed the stop line. Maybe it looks different on video but that is nowhere near enough time to stop smoothly behind the line. In that situation it is much safer to continue driving.
