This project was meant to separate a long room in Josh's finished basement. The intent was to make a non-load bearing wall that cut the long room into a bedroom in the front and a secret office space in the back. To make it fun, Josh designed a corner wardrobe that you could walk through. To keep out little kids and to add to the secret allure, the doorway would lock and unlock with a hidden switch.
Building the wall is pretty straightforward. We used 2x4 studs cut to match the height of the room and span from one side to the other. I also had to leave enough room on one end for the doorway. The wall studs were nailed in place every 16 inches and secured to the floor using Tapcon anchors. We researched the risks of placing a new wall over the carpet, and Josh decided that it was a better option than removing the carpet in that area and adding new tack strips.
Because we intended on running new lighting into the office, Josh ran wiring through an existing soffit and down through the wall on a new circuit. This way, we could rough in a light switch and two outlets in the new wall. We added 3 new low-profile recessed lights into the room which made the space much more usable when blocked off from the rest of the room.
Now that the wall was up, we had to add the door that would also act as the back panel in the wardrobe. We purchased a blank, hollow-core door from Lowe's and a pack of hinges. I didn't get a pre-hung door because those doors are centered within the attached door jams. Our door needs to sit flush up against the doorway so there wouldn't be a weird recessed back panel in the wardrobe.
Josh added some mortices to the door's edge to accept the 3 hinges. I had to do the same thing to the door jam spacer that we created. I screwed this spacer directly to the wall stud and hung the door in place.
To hide the entire opening, we designed a corner wardrobe with two doors and some hanging hooks on the inside. Josh wanted to make sure that the wardrobe was functional and inconspicuous, not giving anyone a reason to know that there was something going on behind the piece. He drafted up a cut list using Fusion 360 and we cut the items out in Josh's shop.
Most of the wardrobe would be framing elements to support the two front doors. Because it was situated in the corner, one back panel would be the previously existing side wall and the other would be our newly installed door. To hide the seams, we used 1x4 boards to make "trim" on the inside and 1x6s to jut out from the wall and support the front doors. Josh used 1/4" plywood strips to add decorative trim to the single panel doors to add some character. The door panels were cut in one piece and hinged to the frame. There is no bottom trim on the doors so you don't have to step over anything to enter the secret room.

Let’s be honest, we all wanted a room like this in childhood
Edit: ok calm down yes we still want it.
yessss
Well I still do
Me2
Even as an adult.
I want to make my own library with secret doors once. Its a lifetime goal xD
Child- There’s a monster in my closet.
Me- Nope just your dad.
XD
Haha, your dad's in the closet!!!
whats the difference?
... Now that game makes *LOT* more sence...
The game in question is that game where you are "uncensoring anime" and your father comes out from everywhere (including the closet) and if he catches you... *Game Over!* ...
Lol
I can just imagine the children being like "Daddy why do you spend 3 hours in a closet everyday?"
Its florida im fairly certain everyone spends a minimum of 3 hours in the closet.
@@Mbnewman087 why??...what do u do in a closet??

I've worked as a journeyman carpenter and drywall installer, amongst other things, which use these skill sets and I can appreciate the amount of enginuity and patience, as well as just "building stuff" that went into this. Very cool.
If you use the available hardware to stand off the drywall from the framing as well as put a thin foam liner between the double drywall on the one side, you can truly sound proof (within just a couple DBs) that room. Depending upon the design of the (or "your") house, if the loss of depth in the room vs the floorplan/layout as you move through the house, the fact that there's a hidden room may not be immediately perveivable and with a little more effort, an actual "safe room" (add outside ventilation and separately supplied "water closet") could be a viable idea. Even without the plumbing, it could be a viable place to fortify (with supplies and maybe a radio/phone setup) and you've got a "where'd they go!!??" room in case of a home invasion situation.
I have a "defensible" if not hidden room in my house that's got ventilation, a bathroom and is my CB radio base station hobby station. If the power and wifi and phone lines all go down, a battery backup supply and my radio setup means I'm always able to get in touch with the authorities and other people, no matter what. The radio communications setup today has a lot of small, inexpensive equipment available that's great in case of a true emergency.
Cool project guys...

First step: get a big enough house so it wouldn't be obvious that a portion of the house is missing.
If it's in the basement, lots of old houses, and some new ones in places like Arizona, only have half basements.
Yeah but it’s better to do it like the video in the basement
Or get George Trevor to design you a house, but hes liable to include at least one room with a drop-down ceiling

Depends on the size of your room. You would be suprized what people won’t notice

I would love that too
@ItburnswhenI Pee 10/10
I've been to a house like that, it had stood empty for many years but had previously been owned by a carpenter with waaay too much free time.
Half of the house was completely sealed of, crooked corridors not going anywhere, hidden doors everywhere, a hidden second kitchen, a tunnel between the bathroom and one of the bedrooms, a flight of stair built just to take you up to a small room with a secret door, that led to another smaller steep flight of stairs straight to the basement etc etc.
Pretty weird. He had also had about 12 cabins on his property, all different size, shape and condition.

You missed a perfect opportunity to add some sound-proofing insulation to that wall but you covered it up with two layers of drywall which doesn't do squat for sound proofing.
Not to mention the pass thru air vent that also lets sound pass thru.
But this way in case of an emergency, you can just charge through the wall
I mean, they also framed the door in wrong, so I don't think they really know what they're doing. At least they tried. lmao

If you want to create a wall that is a sound barrier, use 2x6s for header and footer (not 2x4s). Then use one set of studs for the sheetrock on one side and install a different set of studs (not touching the other studs or the sheetrock on the first side) for the sheetrock on the other side. Weave insulation between the studs.
Sheetrock on one side of a wall normally collects the sound vibrations from that side, transfers them to the studs that are common to both sides of the wall and makes the sheetrock on the other side a sounding board for those vibrations. Doing the above eliminates the common studs and virtually eliminates the sound vibrations that come through the structure of the wall.
Also, I noticed that you cut a ventilation hole through the sheetrock on both sides. Sound is going to come through that hole like there is no wall at all. To reduce sound, use separate ventilation runs for the two rooms.
And you will never get rid of all the sound because sound vibrations will run through your common concrete floor. The carpet will help, and thicker carpet/underlayment is better, but be prepared for some carry through.
A whole new definition of "Coming out of the closet"

Doesn't the pass thru vent kinda defeat the soundproofing? You will hear everything thru that vent.
Thats what I was thinking to, you will easily hear someone on the other side through the hole in the wall , possibly see light as well. Also should have put some bats of rockwool in the stud bays for sound absorption.
@@crossmr yeah and a hollow core door. 2 sheets of sheetrock was a total waste with that vent. Still cool idea for a room though.

Very cool project, it give me lots of ideas!!! Just one little thing though... The way you weld your wires is far to be the good technique to have an efficient join. 1- You need, in order, to have them stripped to expose the same length on both (all wires needed to be weld) 2- Then you position them one over the other in opposite direction. 3- You twist them to make a join that will remain in place for the welding. 4- You put a little bit of welding tin/lead on your iron tip you apply to your wires to make a good heating contact. 5-As the heat is transferred to the wires from the iron tip up the the little bit of welding, you can finally stroke your welding tin/lead on the exposed wires all over it, it will melt and the contact will be perfect every time. Yeah I worked in electronics for years. Still you do awesome jobs in your projects!!!
So Cool!!! I Love it & Admire the Creative Thinking behind it! What's even more Amazing is dreaming the thought up, and actually doing it. Very Cool! Very Cool!

I noticed right away that you forgot one important item. If that is supposed to be a hidden room, you need to add a camera looking out with a monitor inside the hidden room. So in case someone is in the outer room that you don't want to know about the hidden room, you can check to see if the room is clear before you come out of the hidden room. Of course the camera will have to be hidden as well.

Quick PSA: When electrical taping two separate wires together, make sure to tape each wire individually first. Two bare conductors taped together can make for some interesting head scratching😉

Also I don't know what passes for a proper electrical installation in th USA, but for me as an electrician working in Sweden, the only correct part of that electrical installation was the spotlights in the roof. That stuff you guys did in the wall, loose wires and having soldered connections loose in the wall and not in a junction box, just scared the crap outta me.
