- In this video I show you how to paint a landscape featuring autumn trees where a stand of willows and poplars have turned yellow. The painting featured in this video is inspired by a place called Arrowtown in southern New Zealand. This is a place where I used to go plein air painting a lot especially in autumn.
Throughout the video I explain how to paint a harmonious autumn landscape. I show you how to mix the colours for the yellow autumn / fall foliage and how we can create colour harmony in the painting. This video is packed full of tips that you can apply to your own paintings.

I love landscapes but having a difficult way of painting it, until i am now watching all of your videos, such a great process and tecniques u are sharing us.... Btw, incase i don't have the cobalt teal color what can i use to replace it? I am a self taught artist and haven't been into landscapes i like your style and colours, too!
Thank you so much. You can make a colour similar to cobalt teal by mixing ultramarine blue, phthalo green and titanium white 😊

Thanks Akshay. Yes I will be doing some big paintings as well. Part of the reason I am doing smaller paintings at the moment is because they take much less time to paint which means I can upload CZcams videos more frequently 😊

I'm still amazed how you use a long handle brushes also do you recommend small pictures rather than larger panels? Stay safe
Thanks Philip, part of the reason I paint on small panels is so I can get more paintings done for CZcams, but if you are learning to paint I think painting on small or medium panels or canvases is much less intimidating and also takes up less room in your studio 😊

Thanks. Yes I do, in fact I've been adding more animals into my recent landscape paintings and I will be doing more paintings of animals 😊

Hey, sorry for my late reply. The answer is no its not. Toning your canvas with burnt sienna can add a warmth to you painting and can produce a nice effect but it's not essential. Painting on a white canvas will help you to produce cleaner colours and you can use the white of the canvas to gauge the tonality of the painting. Try both and see which one you prefer 😊
