Very nice video. Remember not to let any debris fall into the cylinders.
I did this job today and I was able to remove the leftover RTV gasket material easily by spraying the area with brake cleaner and then using a battery terminal type metal brush specifically for this purpose (don't use the brush you use on the battery terminals..get another brush..a pack of 5 is cheap at Autozone) to easily remove the material without risking gouges to the cover which is a risk with razors....
Thank you for the video. I did just like you taught in the video and everything went well. I added a few things to your explanation like, numbering the spark plug wires because I am not too familiar with the numbering by memory but everything else was done perfectly fine. Car is working like a champ and no Oil leak. Thank you
This is fabulous! I hope it's this easy for me! Next weekend weather permitting!
i like your video, the camera is not moving so i can see very well. and the lights help a lot
Thank you Sir made the job very simple..
+KDSRdragon np, thanks for your comment.
Mate well done, thanks. great video, easy to understand and well filmed...one of the best 'how to' videos I have seen, thank you
Gracias Seenor. Love your videos, to the point and full of useful info.
i really enjoyed all your videos..thanx..
Great videos. Keep it up. It's much appreciated.
...very good explanation..!!
Thanks for your help...
Thanks man that was a lot of help
What about the 1/2 moon plugs? I did my valve cover gasket 6 months ago on my 1999 2.2 and nothing leaked until just now, I have a slight leak coming from the bottom of the driver's side 1/2 moon plug. They gave me 2 news ones in the gasket kit but, I did not use them and now I have to do the job over. Oh well, not a bad job...I used this video for when I did it the first time and, I also used both of your timing belt replacement videos when I did mine 3 months ago. Excellent videos Sir. Very helpful.
Easy to do after watching the video
Thanks
Hai Thai np, thanks for watching.
Agreed with Hai Thai... now I gotta wait until it gets a tad warmer outside unfortunately :(
Finally found,thanks for sharing :)
Great video, thank you!
Thank you for this video. Do those half moon caps not have to be replaced every time? I ask because the gasket kit comes with those.
Good video thanks 🙏
NICE for mecanic teacher
Great video! Thank you. I'm going to replace the gasket on my 2001 Camry. Got a question: Brake cleaner (looks like chlorine-free?) was used here. Is ok or even safer to use Carb cleaner or Throttle body cleaner?
very good!
On mine the repair manual stated the the little notch on the spark plug seals should be facing towards the timing belt side of the cover. I didn't know this the first time I did this and I noticed later that oil was leaking into my tubes. I turned the seals so the little notch was facing towards the timing belt and I.m not sure if this was the actual reason for the oil in the tubes, but since then I haven't seen any oil at all... Must be a reason they say to install them this way, so maybe that was why they leaked... And I'm not sure if your year even has the same set up... Sure looks exactly the same...
i was wondering today what that notch was i faced them to the front of the car guess its time to go point them towards the passenger side. I also didn't use any rtv when putting on the new gasket. Think it will leak?
Good video. I use a 2x2 to hold up the hood. Seen your 2x4. Is there a spec for that on the Camry?
Do you know where the old grommet piece ends up in these if the bottom portion falls into the valve cover area?
Hi, do I have to wait the engine completely cool down before I change the gasket? thanks
Excellent presentation! Very thorough on the details and very easy to understand. Nice editing too. I liked the way you show us exactly how you bolt and unbolt things without making us sit through the whole process. This is an excellent learning tool. I wish more how to videos were done so well. Thanks.
I need to change my gasket on my 2001 Camry 2.2, and I have good confidence it will be done right.
+Brave Voice Hope the replacement went well, thanks for your comment and stay tuned for more. Cheers
+DIY Auto Repair Videos . Excellent video, i have a question. what does it mean when there is a bunch of oil in my spark plug wells?
It usually means you need to replace the round spark tube gaskets in this video. Many valve cover gasket kits include them. watch?v=9M6xWMMRe0E if that doesn't work then:

+DIY Auto Repair Videos Hi, I have a camry cs-x 2000. 1 Mechanic said it has an oil leak so we need to change the gasket rubber. So I'm curious what"s the reasonable price for this? He is asking $220 Australian dollar for this. Is it right?
Thanks,
Robert
do you really need torque wrench to tighten the plug in the valve cover bearing? how were you able to clean the clean the leak to the bottom crankcase im unable to get my hand down there
thanks
It would have been a good time to check the valve adjustment too. However, it was a pretty straightforward tutorial.
Boba Feet Valve adjustment in these is by shim thickness under the cams. Is a robust and direct system but not one you can just tweak while the cover is ofg
Try using a small toothbrush size wire brush after spraying the brake clean on the head where the gasket mates. Also on the inside of the valve cover where the valve cover gasket goes in. Spray brake cleaner and use small wire brush. Dollar tree has three in a package for $1.25👍👍
Hello, I just did this for my 1999 Toyota Celica and the inside of the engine and valve cover looked the same. It has blackish soot along the spark plug tubes and under the valve cover. Is that normal or bad? ty great video (the inside of my engine looks exactly the same)
What type of 30 mm socket a deep 6 pt or 12 pt or just a standard?
Great
Something did an Indiana Jones slide under that closing valve cover @5:18
Oh Snap, I saw that too!
chunk of tape
What type of silicone? Hardening or non hardening?
I got a 2000 Toyota Camry got a knock and I took it apart and looked at timming belt and it is tight on bottom and on top is loose any idea I was thinking timming tensioner
Hi, a cuestión., what is the torque for a 99 Toyota Camry 4 cylinders, thank you.
True mechanics clean gasket area and replace gaskets away from a work bench. There is not a better place than the floor to do that.
2.54. How did you move the wire block or whatever it is. You call it wiring. Your moves no problem, mine seems fastened and I can't get out the top piece even though it's loose and ready
Great vid! Those large 30mm flat fasteners on top of the tubes were loose. Idk how that happens but could it have caused some leaking?
Mine too
They aren't supposed to be loose but they're not supposed to be very tight either all the 30 mm nuts are is just hold the cover on torque them too tight and you could crack the cover.
Those washers on top have a rubber seal under them to prevent oil from leaking on top of the cover or into the top of the spark plug tubes. If the seals are clean there's no leakage. The spark plug tubes often leak from the bottom of the tube. The spark plug wire may have oil on it which indicates a leaking tube. You can remove the tube, apply sealant to the tube threads and reinstall to fix that.
@@Sergeant_DaRkZ was gonna say on alldata it shows a torque spec for those nuts to be 33 foot#s
@@adventureoflinkmk2 33fp??? 😂😂😂 when you split the cover in pieces don't say I didn't warn you I wouldn't go over 17fps
What year is the Toyota Camry?
thank you for the video,,,, is 17ft lbs torque enough for those 30mm nuts or is that too much? thanks
According to Alldata the REAL torque spec for the valve cover nuts is 33 #-ft
@@adventureoflinkmk2 i seen other video it says 8ft
@@DavidHernandez-ue4fz do i have to toque them down to a specific ft pound of touque? Or is snug good?
@@platinumassasin5979 i did just with hand and regular ratchet,if you worked on cars before you know how you feel when is tide.!
Is it the same with toyota celica 1994 gasket?
Looks exactly the same.
If it's a 5s-fe engine I don't see why it wouldn't work here
According to the Chilton manual for 1997-2001 Camry's, the correct torque for "Spark plug tube nuts" is 33 Ft-lbs. I think you said it was 17. Where did you get that number? I always want to use the correct torque whenever possible.
Is that a lower bolt under the valve cover? Is there a torque number for just the valve cover?
Yes I think it is 33 but another channel has claimed it was 13 but 33 is what the manual States.
33 seems high. I just hand tight mine.
I saw 29 on a forum... My boyfriend just told me he tightened mine to 50... 🤦🏻♀️
@@cpgone hey did hand tighten be suffient enough? Thank you
If I'm going to replace timing belt, valve cover gasket, and the other two belts as well as the water pump, what order do you suggest I do? I'm assuming I drain all the fluids first, but, what order would you start? Please, anyone respond asap as I'm going to try to do this very soon.
Thanks
Dave J. You need to do the water + oil pumps. Timing belt back on. Sump back on and then acc belts. There is only one possible order - always make notes as you remove things! Bolt patterns, lengths etc
Thanks... job completed.
Do you have to drain the motor oil before doing this job?
Eddy Palogrande no need to drain the oil. You're working in the upper part of the engine.
i had my valve cover gasket changed both of them and i still see light smoke but i dont see any oil on the ground anymore how can i clean off the remaining residue from the oil drips
Engine degreaser?
I live in florida my camry has over 270 plus miles do you recommend 5w30 or 10w30 high mileage oil
+Carlos Uribe My Corolla has 184,000 miles and I use Castrol Magnatec 10w40 postimg.org/image/5xzaivbf3/.
I believe the Toyota dealers here use Castrol Magnatec 10w30 or the 5w30. 5w is really there for colder climates.
+KiwiPowerNZ 5w30 is thinner than 10w30 right?
5w30 is thinner at startup then it's the same once hot.
+KiwiPowerNZ Ok thats what i had thought.
thanks
no problem :)
only issue is i would never use a screwdriver to get the seal off it can leave some nastey grooves where the valve cover seal sits and it can leak oil.
You can use flat screw driver or small pry bar below the lip of valve cover on either side which is protruded and is not in contact with cylinder head surface area.
It sounds like you said to torque to 70. I think it is supposed to be 17? Otherwise, I found this a very good, clear video.
+C French yes torque to 17. thanks for watching.
+DIY Auto Repair Videos is it 17 fp or ip
Thanks essay (Y)
Nah..! You should also get 1 or 2 liters of kerosene or diesel fuel and clean out the subtle but critical BAFFLES secreted in the top of the cover. Those allow for gas venting and they often get gunked up and blocked. Dump the cleaning fluid in there, then tip the cover back and forth until the stuff that pours out is no longer dirty. All the rest of your advice was fantastic, though.
Do you happen to know if you can just remove the plate to clean under it?
exactly. MIne runs so much better after doing this
My old gasket had at least an inch missing and the leak got worse after I replaced it.
Time to trade in
@@alexchinocastillo nah i fixed it. Just needed more torque wrench
4.07 .. He never showed reapplying silicone to gasket?????
just keep watching
If you spray break cleaner like that, you are contaminating your engine oil.
My Toyota Camry 1994 turns off on me & my accelerometer doesn’t pass 3 i don’t know what’s the problem people are telling me it’s the cat & I took it the a muffler shop & he said my cat is okay
i own a 1991 toyota camry dx it has a 2.0 motor i paid $600.00 for mine
Hey man, when you pulled out all the spark plug ignition wires, in a heap at once. You should have number'd each plug wire. so when reassembled they are in the correct spark plug. Note? the length of the wire doesn't matter. The correct fireing order sequence does
the length of the wires reflects the firing order... you cant plug in cylinder 1's spark plug boot on cylinder 4 because its too far.
was i the only one that saw something go into the engine at 5:18 mark ?
on top of the alternator is a cable bracket that breaks easily. it should fall behind the exhaust covering, past the pipes, waving goodbye to the oil filter as it falls to the floor. Hopefully. Otherwise it will make a stinky smell as it melts on the exhaust pipes as it gradually burns into nothingness. Nothing should be hurt by its passing.
I’m guessing you drain the oil from your engine first?
No need for that.
Unless you gotta a super clean engine. clean the baffles or you are wasting your time
I like u and your videos and your smart a lot of info you have is awesome but Bro your accent gets on my nerves lol not only do I not know where it’s from but I can’t focus on the video because i can’t get passed that
SevenTEEN is much different than 70
