Rather than call these “verified” accounts (as currently architected before Twitter pulled it back), a more apt label might be “paid member” since that’s all it is. This doesn’t convey any imprimatur of trustworthiness to what such a member posts, or even if this user is who they say they are. It only indicates that this user paid for that check mark, which is meaningless in that context. Being a paid member might enable certain extra features (e.g., bumped up in the algorithm), but it wouldn’t make me think this user is any more trustworthy. It only means they’re willing to pay for that check mark. At least that’s how I see it.
The only good part is you can click them to see which type of "verified" the account is. Unfortunately we all know most people won't click to verify the "verification".

Considering you have to have an iOS account, a credit card associated with that account, which basically means you have a real physical address and you are a real person with a real credit score, what more verification do you need?

@@LonSeidman Problem I see with Mastadon is that depending on which server you join the content that you are allowed to see from that server could be already filtered by the onwer of that Mastadon server. I prefer to do my own filtering and I regularly prune my Twitter subscriptions. I use Tweetdeck on Windows so I see the chronological stream of tweets without promoted tweets or ads.
I paid for Twitter Blue and get a few of the features but not the ones I wanted. I bought it specifically for the Longer Tweets feature, but that's not one of the features I actually ended up with. So far as I can tell, the only features I actually got were "Undo Tweet", "Edit Tweet", and "Text formatting". I didn't get anything else, not even the blue check.

The first 24 hours were hilarious as long as you didn't hold Eli Lilly stock but a lot of people I know on Twitter are preparing to run. The tech crowd seems to be leaning toward Mastadon as a potential replacement because it's federated and decentralized.
It's funny after all of this social media stuff we ended up back where we started with a decentralized system :). I have built out a pretty nifty RSS dashboard that I'm using quite a bit these days.
