Hey, so heads up, there has been basically no snow in Minnesota this year, and it has been mostly above freezing. I can't recall ever having such a winter in MN. It's kind of existentially terrifying.

I'm in Texas now, but I was raised in Minnesota. When I went back for the holidays, my brain broke over how little snow there was.

The same is happening in southern Ontario (Canada). We are a little further south below zero when we should be -20C. There's barely any snow compared to normal years. It's soooo weird.

Even Duluth is seeing climate change. This winter, we got almost no snow and the temperatures have been quite a bit higher than average.
That's only because we used up all our snow last winter.
Catastrophic climate change is avoided there .. better than a quarterly storm surges.
That's also the case down here in Cottage Grove, there was barely any snow in December (so much for dreaming of a white Christmas)
@sharper68 you ain't seen a November storm on the Great Lakes then. There's hundreds of boats at the bottom of Lake Superior because of the gales of November. Google "Edmund Fitzgerald" for a recent example

As a Finnish person, Duluth feels homy. Except for the sunlight.

I'm a Minnesotan who lives in Minneapolis. We welcome all to our great state! But just a side note, this year has seen an incredibly warm winter here in Minnesota. We've had almost no snow, and few days below freezing, which is terrifying to us longtime locals
That’s not surprising. Snow patterns are correlated to the latitude but a lot of things have to happen for snow to take place. If the climate around you is warming, you will warm too.
To me snowless days feel colder in winter than days with snow.
@@NotShowingOff Well, not really. A lot of things have to happen for it NOT to be cold and snowy up here in February. This is our coldest month with the kids walking to the bus stop in negative temps. I'm talking -10 to -21 which is pretty normal. It's going to be 63 next monday FFS. Something is very, very wrong this year.
I'm from Farmington (next to Lakeville) and something is incredibly wrong this year. Just WRONG. This time last year, my daughter was walking to the bus stop in -17 weather. Which is NORMAL. It's HOME, it's supposed to be that cold. Take a look at the forcast: Monday is supposed to be 60 and next Saturday? 63 freaking degrees. Trees are going to get effed up when they start blooming. My tulips are popping up. Talk about nature outta wack.
I miss our snow so much. I was actually excited to see the 2" we got last week. And a big thumbs up to "all are welcome here!"
Its been a sad winter for us Minnesotans - very warm and no snow. What people not from teh north don't realize is that in the north we celebrate winter and have a huge outdoor rec industry that revolves around it. Ice hockey, nordic skiing, snowmobiling, fatbiking, etc.
I'm on the Range & literally grew up with the community skating rink in my yard 🙂 (my great grandfather bought a school & built a house in it's foundation, so that's how the rink was in the yard). Hockey is rather important here in Eveleth.
I haven't had much snow this winter. I have only shoveled twice this year (in January). There's not much snow left, only where I piled it. I had greener grass on Christmas than I had all summer. It's 47°F by the old high school in Eveleth right now.
In Duluth my motto was: You know it’s spring when the wind doesn’t hurt.
I was born in Duluth and live on Lake Superior's north shore. The Daily Show hit it right on the head. It is TERRIBLE here and you DEFINITELY should not move here😏🤣

I was born and raised in Duluth. I live in San Diego now, a half mile from the ocean. I'm not moving back. This was a warm-hearted piece, as is fitting for Duluth.
Well, San Diego's going to be having it's own fair share of climate change effects, as is going on now. That half mile to the beach may be shrinking. But awesome place to visit!
I moved to San Diego from King County Washington. You have to get away from the beach, though... I live in a massive hill in the Chula Vista area, and if it floods here, the whole world is over.
I grew up in San Diego and still live here. I'm a quarter-mile from the water and haven't noticed much difference since I was young.

@@richardtibbitts3841 You should know that there have been huge efforts of raising the sea wall so that some beaches are retained along the coast down there (especially near LA county). The entire west coast has drastically changed in the last 30 years due to crazy tides and rising sea level. Sea levels that have not occurred in hundreds of thousands of years.

The people interviewed, if they where from there, where great. Best advertising for the place. For Americans maybe a way to survive a bit longer but still inside the US. So all the other non climate problems are still there.

Minnesotan here and yes, we do absolutely Polar Plunge (jump into the frozen lakes) voluntarily. We also make sculptures out of large ice. Sometimes we make actual ice castles in our frozen lands using cubes of ice as brick and we light the entire thing up and it looks amazing!
Duluth - Where you go out to shovel every so often so you can still get out of the building because you can literally be snowed in.
Oh wow, the people of Duluth are impossibly wholesome. I'd hate the weather, but the people sound like a treat to be around.

I live in Buffalo New York and we had a total of like 14 in of snow this entire winter and it's been 50° more than it's been 30.. people think it's great because they don't have to shovel the driveway but then what they don't realize is that without the snow and the permafrost they're going to have to water their lawns and flowers every single day because there won't be any water in the ground this spring to make everything grow... it's alarming how people are so indifferent
I'm in the middle of Ontario, and it took until the beginning of this month for winter to really get serious for us, and we still have days the snow might start melting again! Usually it's -20 or colder for weeks at a time here at the beginning of the year but we haven't experienced that for years now. It's comfortable to exist in, but deeply weird and disquieting.
Hmm, which would I rather do. Struggle in the cold shoveling snow, or water flowers in the summer? Such a tough decision!

You've gone surfing in Lake Superior? I lived there for 25 years and don't remember seeing anyone surfing either on North Shore or on Park Point. Glad to hear that you did though and enjoyed it.

I used to live near Breckenridge ski resort in central Colorado and some of my local friends moved to the Duluth area and bought a house. I went up to work on that house and while enjoying my first weekend by traveling up the north shore, I met a woman who I’ve been dating for several years now. I have traveled the United States extensively and I have to say that Duluth has really surprised me. Way cooler place than I would have expected considering it’s a place no one ever talks about. I suggest coming up the first week of May for the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival.✌️

I know right? I live between the cities and Rochester. Haven't put on my winter coat once. Only have worn my heavy Carhart hoodie half a dozen times. I've typically just been wearing a flannel shirt.

@@christinebenson518 10/31/1991 4:30 pm: I go into my school's 5th grade Halloween party, in the basement of Tom & Jerry's bar in Chisholm, it was a pleasant autumn day. Three hours later, the party got cut short and when I got outside, there was already a foot of snow on the ground. Yeah, I remember that storm well. Years later I learned that the same storm that is the star of "The Perfect Storm," the two hurricanes that merged, was the cause of that blizzard.

I went to school in Ashland, Wisconsin #NorthlandCollege where "going to Dulute[!]" was a major deal -- a 70 mile car trip and an eternity away. *I miss the North Country so much!*
I lived in Duluth for several years and I loved it. It's a great city and is on a hill like San Francisco. There's a street called 'Skyline Drive' and at night it's beautiful to look down at the lights of the city at night. I would love to move back there some day because the people there are friendly and it has a small town feel while also feeling like a big city.
It's also very terrifying to drive down when those beautiful lights are reflecting off the black ice on the pavement!
That's what we're afraid of! Everybody finding out about our secret heaven, flooding the area, and completely ruining the small-town vibes.

I grew up in West Central Minnesota, my dad's family is from the Iron Range, and I went to college in Duluth (UMD, Class of 2012). I've lived in the Twin Cities since graduation and I want to move back to Duluth with every fiber of my being! 😍

america has wild fires in the west, cold snaps in the north, droughts in the south, flooding and hurricanes in the south east, and freak storms in the north east. all happening more frequently. you know its not a joke when insurance companies are taking it seriously and just leaving states entirely

We should be heading into an ice age by now, so climate change might end up meaning more snow in the winter that just melts in the hotter summers. We can't judge climate change on just a few decades. If there's record snow next winter, it doesn't mean climate change is "reversing." All the major glaciers are retreating now, so it still snows in the north, but more snow melts in the summer than fell in the previous winter. You don't need a major temperature change for that to happen, but the hotter it gets in the summers, it won't matter how cold or snowy it is in the winter, it will keep melting faster each year than it builds up.
The insurance companies are in the wrong business if they can't handle what their clients pay for. Also, I think the last time they posted significant losses was during the financial crisis of 2008, and that was not because of climate events. We, the taxpayers, are the ones who bear the burnt of the burden.
@@GaryMathews-qk8de We still have a serious winter climate. (How many true blizzards did we have here in the Cities last year? A lot!) Winters have gone later too. No, we don't have those unending below-zero weeks anymore, but we still have pretty ferocious winters (season length, storms, snowfall), which really makes this year stand out as utterly bizarre. This was an el niño year, now changing to la niña, and I betcha that's got something to do with it. I'll also betcha we'll pay for this next winter.

I moved up to Duluth 3 years ago. We’ve had three totally different winters. Very cold with average snow. Warm with 3x normal snow. And hottest winter on record with no snow. The big climate change issue up here is forest fires and drought. We’ve had lots of both in 3 years. Right now it’s just a couple of us moving here, eventually we will see a rush here just like we saw everyone moving to the sun belt at the end of Covid.
I remember visiting Duluth in February in 1996, which I believe is the last time Lake Superior froze over completely. There were plenty of hotel rooms available. I stayed at Fitger's Inn right on the lake shore. The suite I was in had a hot tub in the bathroom and another hot tub in the living room area next to the television. From the window I could see the little ice fishing huts way out on the frozen lake. I am from Florida and this was a very different experience for me.
Something worth a Google is the lake ice on the beaches of Duluth. When there’s lots of ice and the right wind conditions, it pushes the sheets onto land, making it look like a totally alien planet.
I live 50 miles east of Duluth and we had 180 inches of snow last year. This year we've only had about about 15 inches so far and it's February 22nd with above freezing temps forecast for the next couple weeks.
Moved from Arizona to Minnesota. Love it here. Probably will hit 130 degrees in the Summer in AZ within the next 10 years.

You're like a reverse snowbird.
They missed two important aspects. One being the great thing about life by the big lake is the marine microclimate, when it's like a sauna in Mpls, it's mostly nice and cool by the lake. But when a storms hits Mpls in the winter we can always say "well it's worse in Duluth." And those hills are a huge pain to navigate when it's get icey.
I live in NYC and LOVE Duluth and the north shore. Family roots there. My grandfather was a bridge operator at the aerial lift bridge. They have had almost no snow this year to date. 🌴🌴

I live in Duluth. I haven't been this flattered since I saw the "I've been to Duluth" Shirt on the lodge owner in The Great Outdoors. It's the simple things.
I haven't watched the Daily Show regularly for a while. Since I was a teenager. But Michael Kosta gives me the vibes. He's a great corespondent, which was always a key part of the Daily Show experience.
Kosta is amazing; his character is like a younger, sexier version of Colbert Report's Colbert character. How was it.... a high-status, well-meaning idiot I think he called it.

As someone who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I love living in Duluth
I am in the twin cities but visit Duluth occasionally. I think of is as the poor man's west cost city. Lots of hills and water views. Reminds me of a much smaller Seattle. The summer weather is pretty awesome too. Bit cooler than the twin cities.
Winter here can be brutal though. Every year except this one, I think to myself, why do I live here. If every year was like this year though, I'd think the state was perfect. I took my dogs out for a walk yesterday with just jeans and a tee shirt, and wasn't cold. We might hit 70 this weekend, in February. I heard on MPR that our average winter temps this year are in line with average temps in OKC. Crazy! I know some like the cold and snow, but I am totally fine without it.
I love Duluth and the North shore! Spent 30 years in Minneapolis and Saint Paul with frequent trips up there. I have extended family and friends that live in Duluth and they wouldn't live anywhere else. Even my wife wants us to retire up there.
Great piece! In about 70 years, I have never seen winter so warm that we can't drive our trucks on the ice to put out our ice houses to fish but that happened this year. We still think this is paradise.
This must have been filmed during our week-ish long cold snap because we literally have no snow, and it's supposed to be around 46F today. It's definitely one of the strangest "winters" I've ever seen.
Yeah, after that last snow we had in Minneapolis (2 weeks ago) I texted my dad in Duluth to ask how much they got because it's almost 3-4 inches more than down here. He said, "We didn't get any", I was shocked.
@@Klos1neMNthat's been how the Arrowhead & Range has been for quite a while now. The precipitation stays south - usually thanks to the Lake. We've been in a drought on the Range for several years, but usually make up summer's deficit with snow. The weather service doesn't usually keep track of drought in winter, but the Duluth news showed a graphic that had most of the region colored in.
It's 47°F in Eveleth right now! I only have a small amount of snow in the yard - only shoveled twice this winter (in January) & the snow piles are almost gone. That's just wrong!
I frikkin LOVE Minnesota. Nice people, great natural wonders, the Twin Cities are great, and the sense of humor is wicked sharp.
I live 55 miles straight north of Duluth on the Iron Range. I've seen a few of the actual reports about people moving to Northeastern Minnesota due to climate factors elsewhere. I think this "report" is funny & I enjoy the Daily Show, but want to also give a reality check for those who are considering a move.
I'm just going to inform non-Minnesotans that my hometown is only about 25 miles away from the state's coldest air temperature record holder of -60°F (yes, that's 60 degrees below zero for those who don't know it actually gets below zero up here) & that wasn't even including the wind chill! We usually have a lot of snow too. Duluth is usually pretty cold & snowy too.
We also have frequent mine blasts here on the Iron Range that can feel like an earthquake (I think they are equivalent to a 3). I've seen posts from new people who are wondering what is happening when their house is shaking. You would think realtors would warn out of towners that their house will shake - multiple times a week depending on what mines are nearby!
Warning for new residents: life doesn't stop up here for bad weather or extreme cold temperatures. Kids are still going to school & businesses are still open most of the time in winter - even if it's -40°F outside. Occasionally, schools will start late or be cancelled if there's an active blizzard & the plows cannot get the roads open before the buses are scheduled to leave the garages. MNDOT & County plows are out 24/7 unless it's unsafe for them. Town plows start at 3am & work until 3pm - they usually get everything clear by the time residents are getting up. Ice closures depend on how much ice - our roads can pretty much be slippery all winter. Driving in winter is completely different than driving in a state that's warm all the time!
We have seen a rise in house sales on the Range recently too. My house value has tripled in the last 3 years - so have my property taxes! I've lived in my house since 1997 & the value has been consistent the whole time no matter how many houses sold in this section of town. Apparently, everyone buying now is going well above asking price to secure the houses - the huge tax hikes are actually forcing locals out of their homes that multiple generations of their family has lived in. I get that property is usually less expensive up here than in the Twin Cities Metro Area or other states, but it's getting a bit expensive for locals who don't make as much money either.
Duluth itself covers over 40 square miles & the weather/Temperature can vary greatly between the top of the hill & down by the Lake. Lake Superior creates it's own weather - so the temperature year-round can change quickly if the wind changes directions. The wind direction also determines how much snow Lakeshore communities get. Lake Superior rarely freezes completely. It's recommended that you bring a hoodie or something warmer in summer if you are going from the top if the hill down to the Lake. There's usually a big difference in temperature since Lake Superior's water doesn't get very warm - again, wind direction is a factor. You will probably want to go swimming in a smaller lake nearby.
Wildfires happen in Northeastern Minnesota too. There were still some of last summer's fires still burning in Canada when I checked last month. Snow usually extinguishes any lingering fires, but there's been little snow in parts of Canada & the US this year. The Iron Range has been in a drought for several summers now & it's been dry this winter - drought is expected this summer too. I only mowed my lawn once last summer & once a month the summer before. I had greener grass on Christmas than I had all last summer. Snowless Christmas's are fairly rare on the Range. I have only shoveled twice this winter & there's only a little bit of snow left where I piled it. It's 45°F outside today! We are expecting some snow tomorrow, but it will melt quickly. It makes me worry about the bad weather that's coming later when we don't have much cold temps or snow in winter. We had some snow & some cold temperatures in January, but that's pretty much all the winter we have experienced.
We don't really have insects or snakes that can hurt you - but some animals are moving farther north, so who knows if we will get them. We do have white tailed, moose, black bears, timber wolves, coyotes, bobcats, the occasional cougar, fox, etc. For the most part, they leave you alone if you leave them alone. Just don't get between a momma bear & her cubs & don't pick up any baby animals you find - their parent is usually nearby.
I am a Minnesota native, and I have to say, ALWAYS bring your "big coat" to Duluth...even in the summer! 🥶🥶🥶 😄

I'm an Iron Ranger, definitely need to bring at least a hoodie & maybe sweat pants if you are going down by the Lake in Summer wearing shorts & a tank top! Even if it's 80+ on top of the hill & the wind is coming off the Lake!

In Vermont we've seen an influx of people from NYC and other places. Snatching up real estate like nobody's business. Us locals don't stand a chance at owning homes now. So that's awesome.
Californians did it to Oregon. I hate seeing people who've lived in a house all their lives not able to stay because the property taxes are too much on a fixed income.
It’s happening in Duluth too. Locals are getting out priced on homes, and being driven out because they can’t afford to live in their home town. It’s awful, it’s what happened to Boulder and Bozeman and many many others. Recently Kathy Cargill bought up and 7 homes and razed them all to build 🤷🏻♀️ as a third, fourth home?? Please stay where you are, Duluth isn’t THAT welcoming

People from southern warm climates also don't realize the cost involved to deal with northern climates. A couple of heavy parkas, sweaters, multiple hats, scarves, gloves and boots. A home heating bill that lasts for 5 months plus. Preparing the home for winter and snow shovels, ice melters, etc. High expense of snow clearing, if you hire someone to clear your snow. Snow tires and winter rims, anti-freeze for the radiator, block heaters, snow brushes & shovels and gallons of sub-zero windshield washer fluid for you vehicle(s). Winter is expensive.

This was really fun to watch! I lived in Duluth for 22 years but then we moved about a year ago after buying a house in southern MN to be closer to family. I really miss living in Duluth & being able to see Lake Superior on a daily basis. The landscape up there is so beautiful!

I'm in Northern Michigan and we've had the snow melt away completely twice so far. Even the lake effect snow has been considerably less this year. 50s next week, I think? In February!
We had some of the super cold last month, but the little pops of "is it spring?" are weird.
Even when it was supposed to be below zero I was wearing a hoodie and was comfortable.

It's the most beautiful place in the country. 95 in the summer -30 in the winter. All 4 seasons and more trails per mile than anywhere in the country.
Don't forget the 20 degree difference between over the hill and by the Lake. (In no way kidding.)
I moved from California to Minnesota 3 years ago. The first winter was tough because my body had never dealt with such extreme colds. Now after 3 years I love the cold. Like she said, if you have the proper clothes it isn't that hard to deal with the cold.
Went to college in Duluth in the early 70's. Great city. Friendly people. 46 below with a wind chill of 102 below was the worst I ever saw in winter. Summers in the 80's and 90's. I loved it.

Here in Duluth we also have a major housing crisis and homeless epidemic. Poor decisions have shelters closing while luxury spaces remain vacant. Rent is amongst some of the highest in the nation, especially when compared to median income. It's rough here, and I'm not even talking about the streets... (your car will break...) But, yeah... Move on in. Everything is fine... *nervous laughter*

Honestly, I think Duluth is absolutely beautiful! I’ve road tripped from coast to coast and I think Lake Superior is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thought the Canadian side is nicer than the American side

I have actually seen it snow on the 4th of July on Lake Vermilion in Northeastern Minnesota. Obviously, nothing stayed on the ground - but there were flakes in the air. July is the only "official" month that the Weather Service does not have snow listed.
Depending on where you are visiting, you will probably want to be sure you bring a hoodie & pants with. Just in case.

Time out, this had to have been shot last year, or later. The restaurant they did an interview in, Cork Town Deli, isn't in that location anymore. And this winter hasn't been that cold at all! Ok, fine, we had one month where it was 5 F for a while. But the bay didn't freeze over like it normally does. Not a bad segment though. And make fun of us all you want, that'll help keep the riffraff out.

I live in NH. As a kid we used to see an average storm be about 6-10 inches, nowadays were lucky to get 3. Our snowy wonderland is melting away on us 😢
Oh so sorry to hear that 😢. I used to go up there for a week in February to go skiing with my brother who taught school and was their winter break. Loved it up there. I live in Tennessee and we actually used to have decent cold winters and snow for a few months in the 70s & 80s!! I ❤ cold weather. Should have moved out of Tennessee many years ago. Stay now to help take care of my elderly mother. I would 💕 to live in Norway, Finland, or Switzerland 😊 🏂🐾
