    Nice job!! New subscriber here! I have a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder 400,000 + miles! Yes! You read it right lol that I finally had to put down but wish I can get it up and running again (if it’s worth it). I had the catalytic converter replaced twice, new transmission, a slow running oil leak and maybe others that my untrained mechanic eyes can’t see!

    Just from reading the comments I had to subscribe. Also hope this comment gets read as it is a few years old, LOL. I was searching for cats R&R VQ 4.0 Nissan Xterra “OR” model as I just bought at a very, very good price. She has 183k on the clock with good maintenance records and no transmission issues noted, (SMOD) but owners were convinced the tranny was shot by some advisor “friends”. The truck looked new & I have a 014 XS with 48k miles and wanted the locking diff, the wheels & maybe the seats, from the OR for my “S”. When I drove it, the tranny checked out fine best I could tell by the way it was running, but immediately heard the rattling along with a misfire, (ah ha) of a plugged cat. 4WD & locker good, no leaks & appeared truck was solid and did struggle to get it to 50’ish mph spitting & coughing terrible!! Oh, AND NO RUST!!! 😁 🤪 Plan to R&R pre cats, R&R suspension, R&R fluids, and hopefully have two solid Xterra’s. Interior is perfect except a tiny driver “in & out” wear spot. So all that said, (sorry for this “book” comment) That said, I have heard on the VQ4.0 that there is a negative pressure from valve overlap that can suck some platinum & garbage into cylinders... ?? Have you any info on this issue? I apologize this turned into a “book”, but you’re vid and especially your comments impressed me and you have a new subscriber.

    What is the lifespan of OEM catalytic converters? I had both catalytic converters on my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder replaced in 2015. This year the P0420 Bank 1 code returned.
    I did a few basic things like spark plugs, valve cover gasket, and air filter, but I suspect its either a bad oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak that is causing the P0420 code.

      So from this point in the video if you need to do the manifold which in my case i sold one due to the screws for the shield being broken.... take the engine mount loose on that side they give plenty of room to jack the motor up a bit you can then move the shield around alot more and get your manifold nuts and sneak the manifold out leaving the heat shield still in the vehicle! Thought i would give everyone a heads up this side is a real pain but it can be done

    hi, great video - very informative. I have a question. i have 2002 pathfinder and i pulled down the wheel cover along with another piece that was in there on the wall side. thing is, there seems to be some kind of other steel wall or something shielding the engine from access that is not like what you have in the video. question is, is that somehow removable ? i tried to get to the 02 sensor from the top with an extension but it is so tight that i cannot even get the 02 socket on it evem with an impact socket. it looks like i can probably remove the catylitic converter from underneath and perhaps get in that way (i have a 04020 bank 1 code so i figure the cat is likely bad but was gonna replace the 02 sensor too since i was going in there anyway. thoughts on best way to approach? its weird because it seems like the layout for the 2002 pathfinder including 2001 to 2004 are different than 2005 and beyond and also 2000 and prior. thanks!

      2002 3.5 engines have a similar process. The o2 sensor is not mounted into the Cat itself, and I did not have to take the fender out because there isn’t any locknuts on this specific 6 bolt Catalytic Converter so all was visible from under the vehicle. The only trouble I had was getting those 6 bolts on the old cat loosened and with the amount of clearance I had since it runs up near the frame it was almost impossible to break them loose. Thankfully, a cordless 3/8 impact drive with a long extension makes it a whole lot easier.

    • @tylerfochtman1578

      Ok. Soo.... wow. Where do I begin. I started off really well. Got to auto zone since my cat came with no hardware, the start of the end, unscrewed one bolt to get new set with similar size. Got home with supplies. Unscrewed all top three bolts and the two on the bottom. Seemed fairly stuck and the idea I had seemed to not be very plausible with the angle, so I went to the rear cat on the same side and unscrewed both of those fasteners which were rusted on and just sheared off. I was able to shear both bolt heads off and shook the whole thing and it all fell apart. Pretty quick. I then realized I couldn't use the nuts I got since the two studs were too big. I put it back together loosely to go grab two nuts from the hardware store. Couldn't match the size. I tightened the rest of what I could since it sounded terrible. I feel like I will have to take it all back apart to find the right size bolt which I could have done if I just took it out of the box or if the piece of junk came with them. Frustrating. What would have taken about 2 hours now is still not done. Oh and the kicker. Since I left the o2 sensor dangling, it melted to the side of the cat and now I need a new o2 sensor as well (which I should have got anyway. I just kinda did this hastily since my inspection is due by the end of the month)

    • @tylerfochtman1578
      @tylerfochtman1578 Před 5 lety

      Btw. I did all this work without jacking it up or taking the tire off. All I did was take the splash guard out, unhook the up and downstream o2 sensors, and unscrew the 7 bolts holding the front and rear cats to each other and to the manifold and exhaust tube, respectively. If the damn thing only came with the hardware. Ughhh

    • @tylerfochtman1578

      I got the cat from rock auto. It was a Wagner 83699 (C.A.R.B. compliant) I called and they said the nuts for the studs are 10M 1.25. I actually bought those and tried and I guess I boogered the threading up trying to take the off since, like you were saying, the way that is makes it a pain for anyone trying to take that off next time. But thanks for your videos. Really helped a great deal. Still have one bolt that needs to be tightened so I am kinda up shits creek. Might just try to muscle it on. Otherwise I will try to use a tap and die to clean it up and get the right nut on it. I just didn't want to take it back out, but if I would have it would have been a lot smoother. I might have to end up doing that anyway to clean the threads. Really a bummer. Inspection is due by next week. Doubt I will be able to complete a drive cycle and see the light stay off. Let's be optimistic though. The more I look under my Nissan, the more work I realize it needs.
