Like the Captain said, Rackham was the kings dog, only cared for his own plunder. So killing Haddocks crew was a sure way of not being ambushed or overrun.

I can see it. If Sir Francis managed to return the hoard to England, it could have financed a number of projects or even used to fund wars that could have shifted the course of history in TinTin’s continuity.
