  • Universal Studios Orlando is set to unveil its most ambitious project yet, Epic Universe. This grand theme park promises to revolutionize the visitor experience, but how will it impact the attendance at the existing Orlando theme parks, especially the legendary Walt Disney World? The rivalry between Disney and Universal has always been intense, with both companies constantly vying for the top spot in the hearts of theme park enthusiasts. The competition between Universal Studios Orlando and Walt Disney World is nothing new, but the introduction of Epic Universe adds a new dimension to this battle. The park's unique themes and cutting-edge attractions, including the highly anticipated Super Nintendo World, are expected to draw massive crowds.
As Epic Universe takes shape, Disney World faces a formidable challenge. The allure of new experiences at Universal Studios Florida is undeniable, and the presence of Epic Universe in Orlando will inevitably shift some of the attendance dynamics. Disney vs Universal Orlando will no longer be just about the existing parks but about how each entity evolves and adapts to the changing landscape. Epic Universe Orlando's impact on Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Florida will be significant, potentially drawing visitors away from other attractions within the Universal portfolio. The showdown of Universal vs Disney World will likely lead to a renaissance of creativity and innovation in both camps. This clash of titans, Universal Studios vs Disney World, could usher in an era of unprecedented enhancements and expansions in the theme park industry. In the grand scheme of things, the rise of Epic Universe Universal Studios may be seen as a catalyst for growth and improvement across all Orlando theme parks. While the exact impact on attendance at existing parks remains to be seen, one thing is certain: the epic battle of Universal vs Disney will continue to captivate the imagination of theme park fans for years to come.

That may or may not happen. They've been wrangling over how to get Brightline through Orland and out to Tampa for years now. Originally there was supposed to be a station at Disney Springs with a route that was entirely south of Orlando. Now they are talking about sharing track with Orlando SunRail and going through the heart of the city. Some are even claiming that Universal doesn't want the station near Epic but claimed to support it so that the station doesn't end up at Disney. The short answer to all of that is, 'this is all local and state politics and commercial interests competing and who TF knows when or if that station ever gets built.

Part of what I heard was that Universal committed to do a certain amount of funding to get it built but that they might be balking at that. Another sticking point might be congestion around the station or it could be that they don't want to give up the percentage they get for all the shuttle bus trips being made to and from Orlando International.

I think the difference with Epic this time over Animal Kingdom and Islands of Adventure is its coming at a time where there is a Disney revolt happening. Guests are actively abandoning Disney right now for their poor park decisions and lack luster offering paired with absurd pricing. Look in comments about Disney ride showcases or news and you will see so many people saying they are never going back and leaving Disney for Universal. Epic also has the advantage of likely being more affordable, less of a headache and boasting stronger IP and day one rides then Animal Kingdom. They have Nintendo plus another Wizarding World land both huge hitters and massively appealing with both a kids land and new coasters. Coming off the backs of Hagrids and Velocicoaster even the older coaster head crowd is going to want to check out their offerings. With how advertisement and hype is spread Epic is a way better advertised park and far more anticipated with constant updates and news about its development.

Unfortunately, Universal staff could not provide us with any information other than that Epic Universe would not be included in any foreseeable future annual passes. With the information we were given, we decided to hold off on renewing our five passes and to save our money for Epic. If we had been given any options for future upgrades on our passes or any benefit for renewing we would have. So that makes sense that attendance would suffer in the own company's parks. Having to buy Genie Plus and Lightning lanes in very costly but that is the only way if you want to ride the rides. I think Disney will drop slightly but I will attribute that to the current Disney backlash.

Or maybe it's because they treat said animals as nothing more than $$$. Their coasters are insanely good, and they are much easier to afford. But people tend to vote with their hearts sometimes. It's why Disney has stupid amounts of people still going, even if the prices have gotten out of hand, while the value has dropped dramatically. There is something that is hard to calculate, but needs to be accounted for. When California Adventure, Animal Kingdom and Islands of Adventure opened potential guests didn't have nearly as much of an idea of what to expect as they do now. Yes, guests knew what to expect from the companies, but they didn't know many specific from the parks themselves. First, there wasn't nearly as much information available about what the parks would include. Now there are construction updates, concept art, menus, ride mock up videos, interviews with creators and a ton of other information to let people know what the park will be like that wasn't available 20+ years ago. Second, Nintendo World Orlando is going to be a beefed up version than the one in LA and a fraternal twin, if not carbon copy of the one in Universal Studio Tokyo. People solidly know what to expect and they are hyped. In the past there were people that wanted to try out a park because it's new. But most people held back because they didn't know what to expect and waited for word of mouth. Since people know what to expect much better they're going to chance going sooner. Even if it's just because of Nintendo World and the obscene amounts of good reviews the other worlds have gotten on CZcams.
I also think that because Disney is offering such good deals to retain guests Universal will still be offering good deals to compete. There may be something where Epic Universe is full price, but everything else is cheaper.
    M
My thought is that Epic Universe is going to surprise the hell out of everyone and do unexpectedly well bringing a sizable amount of new guests into the area. The other Universal properties will stay relatively the same or do better because of it. While Disney takes a hit because of the bad press it's been getting, there being nothing exciting going on besides the deals they're offering and Universal pulling guests away.

They've done a lot to garner so much good will for their parks in recent years so I can see them making sure everything as accounted for as much as possible.

As someone who has been a Statistical Analyst since 1985, the social climate is vastly different today than it was around 2000. The elephant in the room that few people want to talk about is Disney's choice to delve into politics, unnecessarily alienate a huge number of its following, and double down against guests who wishes not to be lectured to. All areas of Disney have suffered tremendously due to this, including the theme parks, due. Their has been down for a while. Their May numbers were way down, even on Memorial Day weekend. Disney inflicted this on themselves. With all of the above happening at Disney, them not willing to simply sell their products and services and leave the politics out of the equation, Disney Execs not taking Epic Universe as seriously as they should, and Epic Universe getting ready to be arguably the best theme park ever created, Disney will more than likely take the biggest hit they've ever taken in their existence. Again, the Orlando theme park climate is exponentially different today than it was in 2000.
I visited Disney World most years from 1977-2016, SeaWorld 1977-present, and Universal 2002-present, we attend Universal/SW exclusively in Orlando now (plus our home park here in the Charlotte area, Carowinds). Our family and some friends (10 of us) will be visiting Epic Universe together for the first time October 2025. We can't wait.

That's not really an accurate read of what happened. Disney was pushed into a corner by a demographic of employees and guests that were demanding they use their voice to oppose policies being put in place by Florida. If they continued to do nothing there was going to be a different group of people that were going to be turned off by their decision. Disney's attendance issues have far more to do with their pricing, general issues with inflation and their shrinkflation tactics (giving their guest less product for more money) than it does politics. The one thing that was really driven home to me last year when I was at Disney last year during the height of their war with the governor was that MOST people really don't give a crap about identity politics. The vast majority of people just want to be able to live their lives in peace and be able to afford a comfortable life and don't particularly care what their neighbors are doing as long as they aren't causing them some kind of direct personal issue.

I don't know how much clearer Disney needed to make it for everyone to understand they were doing everything in their power to purposely reduce attendance while simultaneously maintaining record profits. They knew that the number one complaint of the average Disney guest for decades now was over-crowding and long wait times. How do you reconcile that, while keeping shareholders happy? Yearly ticket price increases. Scrapped complimentary airport shuttles. Switching from free to paid-for fast passes. Focusing investments on DVC buildings rather than budget friendly hotels. They did everything they could to squeeze out the lower to middle income guests. And guess what? It didn't even work. Attendance is still up year, after year, after year, after year.

Epic Universe is poised to become the flag ship park with expansion plots which more attractions on the horizon. Epic universe will have no other new competing this period where as Animal Kingdom vs Islands of Adventure competed for interest. Disney also skated on their reputation as the benchmark for theme parks.
After 25 years, Animal Kingdom has only added a few new attractions and has not offered many reasons to visit again. Disney does not have quite the shine that it once had.
Disney is hoping that people will still stay on property, where Disney may have some home field advantage, but staying at Universal or in the greater Orlando area gives families the flexibility of Universal, Sea World or other non-Disney parks.

I think there’s a relevant difference between types of tourists, specifically international and US tourists. Seeing how Brazilians and Latinos travel to Orlando, even if we say “I’m going to Disney” it always includes all/most theme parks in the area. For Latino tourists, there’s no such thing as staying in one resort only. I totally agree, I think a lot of people will fit islands of adventure and studios in one day and use the “second universal day” for epic.

It’s too bad Universal didn’t plan/time major new rides in their existing parks to open in 2025 too. That would have really ensured increased attendance across the board.

  • @Colonel_Kitty

What if Disney is waiting to open new experiences until after Epic Universe opens? Guests will pick a new park over a new ride/land. Disney will open their expansions and such when Universal isn't adding anything that would draw crowds away. Building a new park costs more than an expansion, but both things get people through the gate.

Not watched the full video yet, just about 2 minutes in. I just wanna put my answer to the question you posed before you answer it
I think guests will most likely not do Animal Kingdom out of the Disney + Universal parks. It may just be my experience, but it has the least to offer the average guest
I'm very lucky to have gone to the parks numerous times with my family. Whenever we go, we tend to spend the least amount of time in that park. We're British so we value AC when available lol, so we automatically aren't the biggest fans of a park with mostly outdoor activities and smaller buildings. It's still a very beautiful park though, don't get me wrong
Not to mention with Dinoland closing soon, it'll probably have the least amount of stuff to do compared to the other Disney parks and Universal

I love Universal and I'm excited about the new park but the hotel prices are increasing drastically. I go every September and I was comparing prices of September 2024 vs September 2025 and the hotel prices are almost double. Sadly making it unaffordable.

This is a great video with great research. However, on May 8, you said Disney was "delusional" for not being more concerned about Epic Universe. Now it seems you're saying the impact on their bottom line will be minimal outside of the first year Epic Universe opens. Which is it?

Honestly I think epic universe will have a larger affect for universal. People stay on Disney property as there are so many parks. Now that universal offers 3 parks, it makes it a single resort destination.
Imagine 5 days at universal, skipping Disney completely.

This is the most fair, well-researched video I’ve seen on the topic. Great work. I think the real loser in 2025 will be SeaWorld. With 7 other theme parks in Orlando, it’s the easiest to shrug off.

  • @44bthknuckles
    @44bthknuckles Před 5 dny

keep in mind we have new players in the theme park market.
but universal and disney need to to show the newcomers like mattel adventure park, the great hearland, libertyland on how to run a theme park and suceed.
these newcomers will watch how well these two will do.
cedar fair and six flags are big threat to disney and universal along with seaworld and busch garderns etc
so these parks have to do well in the near future.

I agree with some of your points for me I think Epic will 100% make all Universal parks strive. Back in the 90's and pretty much up until 2010 when they opened their first Harry Potter themed area, Disney were the top dogs. Even today when you say oh yeah I went to Orlando people say oh Disney Land? Disney has had a grasp on the Orlando theme park market. But again since Harry Potter came in and even more so when Hagrid's opened in 2019, Universal has slowly been climbing to take the top spot of Disney and Epic Universe will be the park to take the crown.
A lot of people will also take into consideration of crowd levels when comparing Disney to Universal. Epic's crowd levels will be similar to Magic Kingdoms daily crowds. Disney is an absolute nightmare for crowds and truly can ruin the experience if Disney. Disney's Genie+ is an embarrassment especially when compared to Universal's express lanes. Unless you are truly a Disney fanatic there will not be many pro's to chose Disney over Universal once Epic opens.
Disney themselves are taking a huge hit in their film and tv show production side of things where Universal have kept it simple.
The only good thing for Disney is that they may see an investment due to Epic's launch.
Also you said "people will need to appear from thin air" Well I will be one of those people and a lot of people will be travelling for this park launch and i'm sure a lot of people who haven't visited for a long time will be visiting Orlando again purely because of Epic.

Are you not counting Legoland Florida as a new Orlando park between IOA and EU because it was a retheme of Cypress Gardens or because it's in Kissimmee?

  • @KronoGarrett

I think this might just ratchet induced demand and everyone's numbers go up, the choke point at that point is probably MCO or the expressways in the Orlando metroplex...

%s don’t work the way you described. Negative ones can often be larger but let me explain
Say you have 100 guests, and the amount of guests you have goes up by 1000%. You would now have 1000 guests. Next quarter, it goes down by 20%. You didn’t loose 20 guests, you lost 200
But if you lost 20% in both quarters, you would still have 640 guests ,meaning you wouldn’t be down 40% when compared to the quarter you had a 1000 guests.
