Paul Simon was at the lowest point of his life, both professionally and personally, when a friend invited him to come to South Africa in 1986. Apartheid was still in force and Simon got a huge amount of criticism for going. But oh my lord, what came out of that trip! He played with and befriended so many black South African musicians who would never have been heard of in the West. And they created this perfect gem of an album, Graceland. It gave visibility and acclaim to the South African artists and it re-launched Simon's career.

Paul Simon recorded his whole "Graceland" album in South Africa with black South African musicians in 1986 when there was still "Apartheid" in South Africa. Other great songs from the album are the title track "Graceland", "Boy in the bubble", "Under African skies", "You can call me Al" and "Homeless"

    • @nudnick
      @nudnick Před 28 dny

Not the entire album. Some was recorded in the USA, with a zydeco band and with Los Lobos. Overdubs of Simon's vocals along with others like The Everly Brothers were recorded in NYC.

It caused some controversy because there were sanctions and embargoes against South Africa due to apartheid. So Paul Simon going to collaborate with artists in South Africa could have been a violation of U.S. foreign policy and possibly international law(?), but he argued that artists are the people who confront oppression and should be supported and celebrated. The album he created with/was inspired by South African musicians, Graceland, is extraordinary. "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" is my favorite song on it because it is so happy and the harmony, instrumentation, and rhythm are amazing.

This collaboration started with Paul Simon's break up with Carrie Fisher. He didn't feel like making music anymore. Then he found an old casette tape a friend had given him with a demo from the South African band Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Simon was completely taken with the music, and felt this was what he needed in his life. So he moved down to South Africa for half a year. They didn't really plan any of the music. They just jammed together for 6 months, then Simon went back to the US with all the recordings and edited them into an album.
Then he went back to Africa to do an African tour with the band. Lots of songs from the Zimbabwe consert here on CZcams.
    For instance: czcams.com/video/Hk7MCvCHNQA/video.html
That entire album is a banger.

His song "Under African Skies", the studio version, is one of my favourites. From the same album as this song.
For another artist who embraced African instruments and sounds, check out Peter Gabriel and his song "In Your Eyes" but make sure it's the live performance from the Secret World tour. It's amazing! The lyrics are fantastic too, a bit of double meaning to them.

I Hear that guy Jeff he's great, I just love this song it's such a happy song I can play this over and over and over, Paul Simon he's an excellent musician and singer, Ladysmith Blackman manbazo is a group registered in South Africa, I think the song is about a very super rich girl, who is so rich she can actually put diamonds on the soles of her shoes, I think she's being courted by a very poor man and I think she's trying to hide her wealth, either way I just love this song, this is such a happy song, I just love the dancing in such combined quarters, this is definitely my top five, I cannot get enough of this, puts me to happy mood every time I hear this, Paul still does a great job at this even all these years later, 🕺🕺🕺, there is a much earlier version of this but this one's a little better, you can tell they had a blast doing it,this is awesome absolutely awesome, thank you.

Paul Simon is a famous singer/songwriter, and his first band was "Simon & Garfunkel" from the 60's and 70's with Art Garfunkel, the guy who came out at the end. But this song was after the group broke up and Paul Simon was a solo act. If you liked this song, Paul's album "Graceland" is all the same calypso/African beats. You will LOVE that album!

LOL Later I bought the LP Graceland which the song is on and every song on it is a banger. There is a great video of the Graceland concert performed outdoors in South Africa. Well worth watching. I had the great fortune to see Ladysmith Black Mombazo live at a #Sunday night concert at West Virginia University, before they became well known. This was such a huge deal. A well-known American musician collaborating with LSBM, a South African group, at the height of apartheid was such a big statement. At the time there was a major protest among musicians to boycott South Africa, to refuse to perform at the venue Sun City. LSBM's worldwide popularity was a slap in the face to the South African policy of apartheid. It was so much more than great music. FYI, their name comes from Lady Smith, the mame of their township, and black mambazo, the type of cattle they raised there.

Check out Graceland, an album of world music that he created in 1985-86, and rebirthed his career, and became his biggest hit album, after already having a legendary career to that point. He is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and a completely underrated musician and arranger, because he also wrote the music for most of his songs. His solo work in the 1970s following the split with Garfunkel is really worth pursuing, such as Me & Julio Down By the Schoolyard, Homeward Bound, Rock of Ages, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Still Crazy After All These Years, Kodachrome, Late in the Evening, so many great songs. your getting Calypso and jazz as they are both based in African Rhythm and beats. Paul took a lot of heat when this came out for "steeling" African culture.

huge controversy around recording in South Africa, using black musicians in the studio. The African National Congress did not want the talent featured to the world while the country was still under apartied rule. Simon is not political, saw no correlation between the ANCs political goals and the art form, so he did it anyway

This performance seems a bit 'clinical' .. in a TV studio?? Saw this live (Albert Hall) and it was so alive.

It shocks me that a person of African heritage (as I am too) could possibly react to this video. Paul Simon broke an international embargo on performing in South Africa in order to produce this album. It was an embargo against the apartheid, racial segration policies of the all-white regime governing the country.

Cultural boycotts only hurt the artists of the country, who are usually among those calling for change and liberation. You think the South African performers objected to becoming world famous and better able to advocate for their people around the world? Most of us in places like the US would never have heard of them if not for Paul Simon.

@@Historian212 As I was in S Africa at the time, I may assure you that most of those who were leading the campaign against Apartheid, whether black, coloured, Asian, or white, opposed this tour.
