    I am 50 and 20 years ago, had the centre of my L4-L5 disc removed, nothing put in its place, I now deadlift 200kg and am a full time firefighter, the human body is amazing, it always finds a way, give it time and focus, you can do anything, Happy New year to you all !

      That's awesome! I'm glad it all worked out for you. For me, my discs were basically flat tires that plagued me for 24 years and they were structurally unstable so a discectomy wasn't going to help in my case. All the surgeons here in the US told me that my only option was a fusion (which I didn't want). The artificial discs restored my disc height to their natural height and relieved stress on my facet joints and everything is functioning normally again. I have absolutely no regrets and am very happy that I went this route!

    Hi Tommy, what a great story you shared! I can't believe what happened to you, if I didn't know of you're operation, I wouldn't have guessed it. I myself are at the moment in a wheelchair, waiting for both hip replacements, I can't afford it and have to go through the government. (Been waiting for over five years now)
    But you are such an inspiration to me....never to give up. I keep myself busy with smaller stuff like sewing (fixing others clothing), a bit of jewelry making, building websites. But I am actually an artist (painting in oils)
    You're kids also bring a lot of joy in your videos, I've nearly watched all of them. Tommy hope all goes well in the future for you full of blessings!

      Sorry to hear about your predicament with the wheel chair and waiting for hip replacements. Can I ask why the long wait? Are you in Canada by any chance? I hear a lot about long wait lists in Canada which is one of the reasons why many people from there still go to Germany to have work done. I wish you the best and hope that you find relief soon!

    Glad to hear you are all doing well. Enjoyed your mobile workbench videos. Your skill and precision are apparent. About Liftbridge. Understand the concept, but I just don’t see that many woodworkers signing on to make someone else’s design for sale locally. However, you apparently did have demand for woodworkers who wanted to purchase designs for personal use. That is an established market model. Go where the demand is. That’s what economics (supply & demand) and good business management are all about. While it is true that some firms ‘lead’ the market and create demand for visionary products, far too many insist on swimming against the tide, producing things that few customers want. Those businesses fail. Best wishes.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety

      Thank you Joe. I've tested the waters and I think you're right. Woodworkers today want to build more for personal use only. I've already made the decision to sell my own plans and all the parts for those builds on liftbridgefurniture.com. I have some work to do with changing up the web site, but that's the direction I'll be heading moving forward.

    I had a bad back for most of my life. I had a fall when I was about 20 and fell about 15 feet and landed basically on my butt (with my feet slightly slowing me down before my butt hit). I was in pain a lot and even had a time where I was like you in the video and was pretty much in bed for an entire week. When I was about 42 I started working out. Doing squats, deadlifts, bent over rows and other things everyone tells you are terrible for your back. I am 48 now and I haven't had any real back pain since I started working out.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety

      Ouch! I'm glad it all worked out for you. I went through years of PT, stretching, chiropractors, traction, inversion therapy, switching to an all plant based diet...etc and nothing could fix me. My discs were too far gone. If your disc isn't that bad, PT and stretching can do the trick but there is a point of no return which I had crossed. But I'm all fixed up now and feeling better than ever. I just wish I would have had the surgery sooner so that I didn't miss out so much on life over the last 24 years.

    Now that is what I call an update. Great news as far as everyone's health goes, the shop updates, and your business direction. Really interested in your spray booth.
    Now, LiftBridge is a really interesting idea. I looked at it to see what it was all about because we are a two person, garage based business, and many times we have people come to us with a plan they purchased and want us to build. At the same time a great deal of our business does is at local fairs and shows so we tend to build an inventory of things for that. We have an Etsy store where people can also buy our products and get custom things made. We thought Lift Bridge was an easy fit. But then we ran into the issue of us being able to build stuff for our shows. The platform relies on "custom" sales, in a sense, and we do a lot of "spec" sales. An example would be your Pegs and Jokers game. We sell games and build them for shows and to stock our Etsy store. Some time ago we built a game similar to yours but we liked yours. As we currently understand it we require people who want that game from us to go to your site to order a board from us. That doesn't work well at shows and fairs. People want to see, touch, and walk away with things at these shows and fairs. For follow on sales that would work. This might be one of the reasons some people are confused and are hesitating to join your maker group. But I still think its a good idea.

    Having MCT oil in my coffee right now. I know your back was giving you troubles (and you've got the same physique I had), so here's *me* trying to repay *you* with a tip... Going very low carb / higher healthy fat (aka Keto) has dramatically reduced my day-to-day aches and pains. Ditch the breads and sugars and you'll be amazed at the weight loss, energy, lack of pain, lack of lethargy, etc. etc. It's no joke.

    What an amazing year. Thanks for the update. Totally fascinated with the back surgery. I broke my neck about 20 years ago and know that disc issues will be a debilitating issue in the future. Can the replace discs in the neck arms well? I’m sure surgery in Germany is out of pocket. Your insurance isn’t likely to cover that or does it? How reasonable was it to go that route?
    Second. Love the MCT/Beeswax idea. Genius.
    Last. What was the name of the game you were making? I wasn’t quite catching it. I’ve never heard of it.

      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, absolutely they can replace discs in the cervical spine (neck) as well! They do this all the time with great success. There are some cases where insurance will reimburse you through an international claim for ADR surgery but it doesn't seem very common. I got a loan and paid out of pocket for mine. The entire surgery to have two levels replaced, 1 week stay in the hospital, another week stay at the amazing Medicos rehab facility, hotel for a support partner, all meals for both of us, and transportation to / from the airport was 33,500 euros. It basically equates to a nice car payment to have a new back and a new life.

      Tommy Tompkins thanks for the information. Trust me I get it. Worth every penny. I wonder how long until that technology is widely available in the US and the reasons for our healthcare to be behind on this?

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety +2

      Great question. The FDA approval process is weird. The discs that I have in my back are from a French company that has been implanting these discs in thousands of people since 2004. Somebody that spoke with an executive in their company mentioned to me that they don't have much interest in paying many millions of dollars to jump through the FDA hoops with clinical studies since they're very comfortable with sales in other countries. I think it's something like $200 million for a clinical study with the FDA and even then there's no guarantee that they'll approve it. These discs have been implanted in thousands of people in other countries since 2004 with excellent results. Check out the documentary on Netflix called "The Bleeding Edge" which explains some of the nonsense with the FDA.

  • @andrewcady9443
    @andrewcady9443 Před 5 lety

    I looked into the Lift Bridge Furniture site as someone interested in being a "maker" building the furniture for sale. I'll tell you what put me off: the need to buy the plans and build a model before knowing there is ever going to be an order. Without a guaranteed buyer, building anything is spec work, and paying anything in has a bit of a scammy feel to it, if you know what I mean. Basically you've structured the thing so that you have ownership but you still expect the makers to take on most of the risk. (Of course, you are still taking on risk, but if you imagine say 20 makers, that probably already adds up to more risk than you put in.) Not that I'm suggesting you offer ownership. If you structured it so that makers weren't taking on the risk of finding no buyers -- by being a buyer yourself -- the proposition would be much more appealing. You could do this by writing out a specification and then making offers to however-many makers to buy a piece if it meets the specification. You then would have to be selective in who you make offers to though, which I know makes it harder. Maybe it's not worth it to you. Anyway, congrats on the baby!

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the feedback Andrew. I'm trying to understand the "risk" issue and I'm not sure if we're on the same page. I'll give an example of the way I pictured this happening using the standing desk. Let's say that you watched my standing desk video and decided that you wanted to build it. You would visit liftbridgefurniture.com and purchase the plans for $29 and build the desk no different than if you bought plans from any place else. If you liked what you built and wanted to build more for other people, you would have the option to sign up as a maker and setup your own store on liftbridgefurniture.com for no additional cost other than the platform and designer fees that are only paid in when you make a sale. The total cost to get started is still just the $29 for the plans. The platform fee would be used for development, maintaining the site, marketing to get buyers in browsing and looking to buy Lift Bridge Furniture...etc. That's the idea anyway.

    • @andrewcady9443
      @andrewcady9443 Před 5 lety

      @@TommyTompkins That's fine _if_ I want the desk for myself. Otherwise, I have to invest not just for the plans, but the labor and materials (and possibly tools) to build it, in the hopes that it will sell. If it doesn't sell, then I lose all that. I do have a desk, of course, but I don't necessarily want it.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Před 5 lety

      Ah I see the misunderstanding now. If you read the policies on LBF you’ll see that it’s setup more for made to order instead of build then sell. So you receive the order first, then you build, then deliver so you don’t really hold any stock (unless you want to). You just have to build and deliver within the time limit that’s communicated to your customer in your store policies and if you can’t for whatever reason, you’d let the customer know and cancel the order.

    • @andrewcady9443
      @andrewcady9443 Před 5 lety

      @@TommyTompkins But isn't it expected that you build it once and put pictures on the site? I vaguely remember that this was stated as a requirement at one point, though it doesn't seem to be now. But it seems to be how the site is set up. Of course, even just buying plans without an order is a gamble.
