World's Tallest Seacliffs - Maui Flight

- While visiting Maui with my family, I decided to take my brother and sister in law on their very first flight in a small plane. I mean if you were to have your first #flywithsoni experience where else but in paradise, right?
It was also the first time I had a lesson in a Cirrus with Maui Flight Academy.
We flew from Maui, Kahului airport to our first stop Molokai.
Did you know that the Hawaiian Island of Molokai is home to the tallest sea cliffs in the world? These magnificent cliffs tower between 3,600 and 3,900 feet above the ocean per GoHawaii.com.
We landed in Kalaupapa airport, which was the shortest runway I have ever landed on. We had an amazing experience... big thanks to Maui Flight Academy for giving us an awesome tour!

It's AWSOME isn't it? I was in Maui a few years ago and rented a 172 for a few days. Flew to the big Island and got a look at the volcano. Then flew to Molokai and landed at Kalaupapa. It's the one next to the leper colony. I know...it sounds terrible but there is an old leper colony on the island that is a historical park. The scenery is just off the chart. Unfortunately the weather I had wasn't quite as good as what you had. I think the ceilings were about 2800' with drizzle. But still it was the experience of a lifetime. I'm really glad you got to do it too! BLUE SKIES--

I know you are very busy and time-limited being a Doc, but I have a suggestion that might help you. In the last century, my good friend was an ER Doc, and I was a research engineer. Both of us had time consuming jobs that limited our flying time. Our solution was finding a small airfield that rented C150s and C172s that was relatively close to our work. We could be in the air in 50 minutes from the time we left work. We flew to any airfield within 30 minutes of flying time. We would land take a couple pictures and fly back. We could usually do this twice per week. Then the Doc started flying sick kids, veterans, seniors or anybody who needed to do something different, in his short flights. It was fun and kept us flying while working in a demanding job.

Very nice -- did the same thing just last Sunday, albeit in less luxury, in a (t)rusty old C172 from the guys one row of hangars over. Had three people with me, so I needed to get checked out and then fly them, but it was a great experience. We also decided to land at the (world's?) last Lepra colony. A beautiful little airport. The shipwrecks around Lanai, and the tall cliffs were definitely some highlights -- I didn't even know they were the world's tallest. The traffic around Kahului seems to be a little chaotic, even for a class C airport...

Great views and great flying! And you aced the landing, congrats! Must be a very different experience from the Cessna.
I mean, after flying only C172s for a year it took me 22 tries and a month to get a nice landing in a modern, sensitive airplane - a DV-20 - even though I had soloed in a low wing :) And it also took a pilot sibling to point out the obvious mistake: over controlling during hold off. A nice ending to a very nice flight with her yesterday, over the snowy fields and half frozen lakes and gray sea around Helsinki, under a high overcast at sunset - that is, 2:22 to 3:22 pm local time :D
