  • The Fifth Generation Dodge Charger probably wasn't what any Charger enthusiast expected to carry on such a big name! However, thanks to Lee Iacocca and Carroll Shelby, the little 2.2 Charger made a name for itself! For the full video, check out "The History of the Dodge Charger" on The Gearhead Lounge!

I had 1 of these p.o.s. cars for a minute. It said Dodge on the front, Plymouth on the back and Mitsubishi on the starter. It was the first time I ever drove a wrong wheel drive car in the snow. I drove a block and a half, turned around, went home and walked where I was going.

There have never been sadder times for the automotive industry that the 80's!!!~ I'm 59 so I lived it!!!

I think 1974-1979 was worse. The 80's cars were crap to begin with (but got better) while the late 70's cars were formerly good cars twisted to suck with each year worse than the one prior.

In 1988 I was 18 and bought an almost new 87 Shelby Charger GLHS. I had tons of fun in that car. it was the first car I ever took to the track at Englishtown. I still have my first time slip to this day. Ran a 14.68 not fast today but back then quick for a stock turbo 4 banger. I would love to get another one now.

@@TheGearheadLounge It's ok. My buddies Grand National was consistently almost a second quicker on stock tires. A few mods put him in the 12's. Back then there were no mods for the Shelby but now I see them running 11 12's on CZcams. Still had lots of fun chasing down those tpi f- body's.

I bought the Charger 2.2 in 1981. Had a manual 4 speed..Not sure you could even get an automatic...Traded that in for a 1985 Dodge Conquest with the turbocharged 2.6 liter engine with a 145 HP. Had a 5 speed manual transmission.

When Dodge ran the ad bragging that the Charger 2.2 was quicker 0-60 than the V8 GM F body and Ford FOX body, that lit a major fire under those companies. While Ford was serious about pushing the turbo 2.3 and GM had the turbo 3.8 V6, the embarrassment of their V8's was more than they could stand. If it weren't for that humiliation, you wouldn't have the monster horsepower numbers we saw in the ensuing 40 years.

It was a different time back then after the oil embargo and gas rationing. People were looking for mpg instead of hp. I was driving a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner that was only affordable because i got it from my Father. I then had a 1982 Trans Am with a 160 hp V8. Then moved on to a 1992 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T @ 225hp. Later bought a 2007 Ford Mustang GT @ 300 hp. Still have it but today's hp is more than double in most cases. I suspect we're headed back to those dark times with increasing fuel prices, deletion of performance cars, lawnmower-sized car engines, etc...

I owned an 87 Shelby charger when I was 19. The shifter was terrible with super long throws and a dog leg reverse.
That being said, I fucking loved that car and it was surprisingly faster than some older Camaros mustangs et.

1966 Hemi Charger went to 60 in 6.4 seconds with a monster V8 426 ci. The 87 Charger GLHS did 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and would hold its own against IROC's and 5.0 Mustangs.
