Rod Brind'Amour On Officiating, Trade History and Winning in Carolina | 32 Thoughts Pop-Up Edition
The Carolina Hurricanes are a hard team to play thanks to their coach. Elliotte sat down with Rod Brind’Amour in Ottawa the day after his son, Skyler, won the Frozen Four with Quinnipiac. They talk about Skyler’s journey in hockey, the make up of the Canes, why he got into coaching, the Stanley Cup run in 2006, being part of some massive trades during his playing days, his relationship with owner Tom Dundon, the culture in Carolina and the changes he feels need to be made to officiating in the NHL to make it an even playing ground.

Life long die hard Philadelphia Flyers fan. Rod Brind'Amour is my all-time favorite Flyer, all-time favorite hockey player of all time! My first Flyers jersey, when I was 9, was a Brind'Amour jersey. My 8 year old son currently has said jersey! I was 15 when Philly traded Rod to Carolina and I legit cried. I didn't cry but I did tear up when Rod and Carolina won the cup in 06'. Love this dude and love seeing him being successful as a coach. Now Hall of Fame voters pull your heads out of your butts and put Rod in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He freaking deserves it!

We love Rod because he never left NC. He worked as an assistant coach for a while before he got the call for the head coach job. I appreciate when he said he’d coach the Canes or he’d retire. He’s right. We have a great place to live for players. We have good weather (until the summer and they’re gone anyway), we’ve got world class golf courses, and honestly if I saw Andrei Svechnikov at the Harris Teeter, I’d give him a head nod and a quiet “let’s go canes” as I passed his cart in the aisle. Rod Brind'Amour is developing into a great coach, but he isn't 'one of the best' just yet. His current coaching record doesn't come close to supporting that, but this is just his 5th year. IMO, this is his best year yet. I'm amazed how the team has overcome so many key injuries and make it to the semis. Unbelievable how good they are playing without Svechnikov and Pacioretty. Losing those 2 would have crippled most teams. Brind'Amour spent most of his career as a minus player. I guess he changed his view when he started coaching because he has everyone buying into the 2-way game.
