Doug Williams, always underestimated. Super bowl MVP. Still love those uni's.
doug got his ring with the redskins. shouldve stayed in tampa though. that team was stacked with talent
@@BarryGGould Hugh Culverhouse was playing games with Doug Williams not extending his contact took them to the playoffs 3 times think if Doug Williams get his contract extended maybe he doesn't go to the USFL probably around 1986 he get traded to Washington
Hmm why Doug wasn't glorified when he won superbowl XXII MVP?

I was 9 years old, and this team, this season, and those awesome Creamsicle uniforms made me a Bucs fan. 40 years later I still am.
RIP Ricky Bell - gone too soon :(
They had a gay pirate as mascot 😂
@@cl5619 Whatever. Still liked the team colors.
had Doug Williams and Lee Roy Selmon not been injured in the NFC title game, they could've beaten the Rams.
I remember this so well. What a coaching job McKay did. Going all the way to the NFC championship game.
@J Dial / I know, I have seen that clip many times. He was funny as hell, for sure.... He said besides running, and blocking, and tackling, we did good. 😂😆
They were so close! I would have loved for that Bucs team to win the Super Bowl in 1979 after starting out 0-26.
@@MikeP813 / I know! I think their very first NFL game was against my beloved Oilers.
I blame owner ship for not keeping him

John macay was great he was some character
Doug Williams 12, Leroy Selmon, Jimmy Giles, Ricky Bell, ‘79 Bucs-- GREATNESS --
Was 20 years young and at that KC game to clinch division...now at 60 still some of the hardest rain ever at any NFL game I believe.
Ironically, there was an even heavier rainstorm at Arrowhead during a Chiefs-Seahawks Sunday night game in 1998. Plus a lightning delay.
@@DNSKansas I guess KC could really bring the rain. The Bucs would have clinched by winning any of the 3 games before that one and could not. We actually were OK sitting through that monsoon as long as we got that 3-0 win.
McKay was a Character
Epic. Maybe the Greatest Unknown Story in NFL HISTORY
Wow, that offensive line was godlike. Only allowing seven sacks in a season is virtually unheard of in the NFL today.
And ppl were huge critics of the group for their so call poor play.
They got a lot of help because Doug Williams would typically run or throw the ball away before he could be sacked. He had a completion percentage below 42% that year, so you can imagine that sack total should have been much higher.
The greatest team and helmets in the NFL
Sad they discontinued ESPN classic I loved watching all of the buccaneers yearbooks on it, I sometimes was late for school just to see one more
Coach McKay was a great coach.
I have a vintage Williams nfl bucs creamsicle sweatshirt i bought on ebay last year I wear ii every week. Reminds me of being 8 again in 79 when ppl and things were straightforward and simple
I bought a Williams creamsicle jersey waiting for delivery
I was at the KC Chiefs game in the rain and the game for the Super Bowl against the LA Rams. I saw Joe Namath play in a preseason game at Tampa Stadium before the Bucs existed in 73.
I too was at the KC game in that rain.
@@jm5732 I loved that Stadium. Still can't believe they tore it down. Nothing wrong with it. We used to go to all the University of Tampa Spartans games with Freddie Solomon QB, before there was end zone seating. I went to one game in the new stadium, never again. $4.50 for a 12oz bottle of water, forget it. Never again.
@@ripper-wrench I went to dozens of games back then...just a handful in new stadium. Most expensive ticket was $18....I think cheapest now is 60 or 70. Comfortable seating, AC and everything else at home make it no longer worth it.
@@jm5732 💪👍
Doug Williams was only sacked seven times that season and not one member of the Bucs' offensive line made the pro bowl? Effed up!
Extreme bias was shown to the Steelers and Cowboys.
Sacks weren’t an official stat yet, and he threw a *lot* of passes away so he wouldn’t get sacked. I think his completion percentage was something like 42% that year.
@@untexan most quarterbacks back then had lower completion percentages tho. Terry Bradshaw barely completed 50% of his passes.
Lineman George Yarno lived 2 houses down from me and would always come outside and play fulltime QB with us neighborhood kids.A good Christian man who I think has since passed away to cancer.RIP George Yarno

@@frankdenardo8684Although that was the 2002 season
@michaelleroy9281 Interesting fact was that when the Bucs played the San Francisco 49ers. All the games were played at the Stick in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1983, and 1984. The 49ers never played at Tampa Bay until 1986.
That defense was something else!
Bucco Bruce !
I remember the 'Monsoon Bowl' finale of the regular season. What slop! Kansas City and Tampa each missed a field goal. The the Bucs lined up for a second try. Blocked and missed kicks were all I was thinking of remembering from the Minnesota loss. The bad snap, the adjustment to get the ball down, the kick and follow through. Bucs win! Bucs Win! This is the greatest low scoring affair I ever saw. Both teams just slip sliding away while the stands became waterfalls. Kansas City 0 Tampa Bay 3.
"Now when they had to, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pulled together to fashion a championship out of the mud." This is the writing I miss so much from the old days of NFL films. Nobody narrated highlights like John Facenda.
Who would have ever thought that 41 years later, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers met in another championship game.
That game turned out to be Super Bowl LV.
But unlike the "Monsoon Bowl", Tampa Bay destroyed KC in that game.
@@theicchamp06 The weather in 1979 destroyed both teams.
18:00 minute mark is one of my all time favorite NFL Films segments. Still gives me goosebumps after all these years. That fade away from Giles tackle to Bell's fumble is a classic.
" The Buccaneers defense was brilliant".....
John McKay and Hugh Culverhouse almost made it work. To bad this was the closest they got. But 44 years later this Bucc's team and season still stands out on it's own. If I'm not mistaken Doug Williams is the only player from this team to go on and win a Superbowl eight years later with the Redskins who I think scored thirty five points in the second quarter against the Broncos. Williams threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter on his way to MVP of the game.
@@wilcox728 I think you are right about Doug Williams.

Great team
That would have been great had they won it all that year!
This was a cool team. Williams was the man!
A great season for the Bucs and part of a nice little run of success before the Bucs sank into the abyss courtesy of Hugh Culverhouse. Culverhouse did anything and everything to help ensure that the Bucs wouldn't be competitive after 1982. I was not a fan of him.
John McKay taking a group of losers and turning them into winners in the Buccaneers and then somebody else throwing it all away! Why in the f**k in his right or wrong mind would ever do such a thing? To my point of view, it seemed that this shithead wanted to prove that the Buccaneers had no business being in Tampa Bay! Kind of like the Buccaneers were Batman and Robin and then having the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and Catwoman invade their privacy.
Culverhouse was a banker and he ran the Bucs to make money instead of winning. These days with all the revenue streams and a salary cap it’s almost impossible to lose money owning an NFL team, but back then if you wanted to win you were probably in the red.
Bucs go back to this look pleas
Mark Symbala; loved these "creamsickle" unis. The current look is THE worst in the NFL.
Joe Griego I agree with that
I wish we could! Or at least the ones from 1997-2013.
Mike P now they look like walking alarm clocks
Mike, i like the new uniform it kind of says [death] to all those who enter!!!!

Remember when Tampa beat Philadelphia to go to the championship game against Los Angeles and saw how excited their fans were for team's accomplishment. Miss those orange uniforms.

OUTSTANDING DEFENSE.
This 79 squad definitely was super bowl bound. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be
I was a huge rams fan and watched that championship game is dismay. They sure had a great defense tampa bay did. I mean the rams scored more points and were actually leading in third quarter in the super bowl against the steelers, but they could not score against tampa bay. makes you wonder if tampa had managed to pull it off, how they would have done against pitt
Doug Williams threw a TD pass sitting down that season
I'm a Steelers fan but you got to love the Tampaybay Buccaneers uniforms and logo a classic but I respected that team their defense and Ricky bell and Doug William's was good I thought in 1980 they would have really made noise but didnt

Super Bowl rings or no Super Bowl rings, one of the most underrated defenses of all time. If you want an underrated defense who won a Super Bowl, you gotta go with the Miami no-names.
Yes they truly were. I checked the numbers for the 79 Bucs defense and they were number 1, topping the Steelers. If only the Bucs had beaten the Rams in the playoffs that year. Who knows what they could have done in the Super Bowl.
The funny thing is even in 1976, the defense was always good. They were just worn out from being on the field for at least 2/3rds of the game.
@@MikeP813, very deceiving as they played the old fifth place schedule in the NFC, getting a terrible NY GIANTS team twice as a result of being a fifth placer the year before. The NFC CENTRAL was also very weak that year, as the VIKES were transitioning from the old guys to the new ones that brought medicrity. WHAT TB do in the following immediate years?
The NFC had collapsed, too as a RAMS team that used VINCE FARRAGAMO won the CONFERENCE. Dallas was ok, but other than a 9-7-0 RAMS team, the old familiar names were missing that season.
The AFC had the clubs, PITT., HOU, DENVER, OAKLAND, etc..no comparison..
Winning the NFC playoff game and winning the NFC CENTRAL was highly overrated. They were young, though, but untested against great competition.
Yep.
Sorry, typo, What did TB do..., not WHAT TB DO, and...mediocrity, not medicrity..sorry, typo..
They never had a good offensive scheme for the offense
That was awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@ 6:55...INCREDIBLE catch-WOW!!
Awesome!
@@MikeP813 Do you have the complete game with K.C. (the 'Monsoon Game') to upload???
Mike P I was here once asking about the name of a song, but now I am back to talk about this great team! I highly enjoyed the way Doug Williams threw that deep ball. He truly was responsible, aside from LeRoy Selmon and a solid defense, and Ricky Bell of course, for keeping the bucs competitive in the playoffs. No disrespect to Ferregamo and the Rams, but it is a shame that the bucs never got to show their stuff in a Superbowl. And even more heartbreaking, once Doug Williams and coach McKay were sent packing, they wouldn't be good again until 1997!
In the 1979-80 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 3-0 to win their first NFC Central title in franchise history.
In the 2020-21 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 to win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
Great team. That NFC championship game was a battle. Why McKay did not go for field goal attempts in the 3rd and 4th quarters still surprises me!
Very good time!
Still remember the typhoon against the chiefs that won the bucs the division. Nbc game.
Even though I'm a Steelers fan for 41 years.....I've always been fond of the Bucs for some reason...maybe its the creamsickle uni-s and bucco Bruce......lmao
I think one of the village peoples names was Bucco Bruce....LOL!!
Hard to believe Ricky Bell was dead 5 years later, at age 29, from a rare condition.
That was awesome.
Rams 9-0; Rams 11-6. Two high scoring affairs that denied TB two additional SB opportunities.

I remember this. This was way back when they played real football. 90% of today's players wouldn't last a game back then. Today its way too soft. Hard to watch.
13:28 What a crazy tackle lol.
That final regular season game against the chiefs was the worst weather I can ever remember seeing
I think it was a monsoon or something lol
I was just gonna ask if anyone remembered that.
I remember being 10 y.o. when that game was played, and when I saw highlights from the west coast, I immediately wished I could be there, as my friends and I LOVED playing football in the rain. Since the W.C. doesn't get much rain (CA), we had to wait for the sprinklers to go on and off, and THEN we would hit the grass and play. Most of my childhood sucked, but that has always been one great memory.
I'd ABSOLUTELY LOVE to get the Monsoon Game on DVD. Anyone have any suggestions where I could find/buy it???
I recall a similar game the Bucs played against the Bengals, huge flood the whole game. Maybe the previous year

Doug Williams best attributes were his toughness and leadership. That is invaluable.
Towards the end of the season they lost three in a row. Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and a week 15 meeting against The San Francisco 49ers. They won the division by beating the Kansas City Chiefs at home.

Remember how the Buccaneers were made fun of because of these uniforms. Now the Seahawks run around in fluorescent nuclear waste colors that make these look tame. I attended Hillsborough Community College across Del Mabry and USF in Tampa from 1990-95. Sat in Tampa Stadium many times. I really thought this Stadium was beautiful. The nicest, greenest, best maintained field in the NFL.

Brandon Morris Not upset bro. Just giving you info. I didn’t even know who the commentator was not too long ago.
Crazy how Dallas and Tampa crushed the Rams at home in the regular season but both teams lost to them at home in the playoffs.
That '79 Rams team, although not the best of their seven straight division title winning teams of the seventies, got hot at the right time, winning five of their last six regular season games. They carried that momentum into the playoffs and all the way to the Super Bowl. Tables definitely turned in their favor.
Change your description. This was in their 4th year
Are you disappointed in how this season for your Buccaneers is going Mike P?
Extremely disappointed...
Disappointment becomes moot after a certain time has passed. Yeah, it hurts when your team doesn't perform as well as they should have, but those of us that have been fans and been around since the team's founding understand this: No season can be as bad as those first 2 seasons.
